The food was super filling and tasty - we ate every last bit!!!

Absolutely amazing. Excellent service, vegan knowledgable. I had Daal something that had red kidney beans and black lentils in a rich gravy. And roti. Stunning.

Fast and friendly, pretty tasty - Edit
The staff are really happy to help and clearly understand what is or isn't vegan (they can offer several dishes to choose from). Service was super quick too. The food probably wasn't the best Indian food I've ever had, but was nice enough.

We had the vegetable makhani, eggplant and mushroom special and pathorna. Staff are helpful in identifying what could be veganised.

Great Indian food - Edit
Had the Vegetable Balti, Roti, and Methi Parantha. So nice to find an Indian place with options other than the “usual suspects” (e.g., dal mahkini, dal tadka, chana masala, aloo gobi, etc.). I love those dishes, too, but it’s exciting to get to try something new, especially when it’s so tasty!

Good spices ~ Wonderful flavours.... - Edit
There are more than a couple of Indian restaurants we've tried in Taupo over time but this has been our best experience with vegan options.
Read moreStaff were very attentive with what was suitable (or not) & based on the recommendation of our server, we tried the Vegetable Balti which was a great dish.
We also really enjoyed our Chole Punjabi along with the Roti & Parantha breads.
Portion sizes were good & prices were very reasonable. We had great service & would definitely return to dine here again. Recommended.
Pros: Great service. , Clean restaurant with great decor.

I had aloo mattar and my husband had the veg jal frezi. Both very good! We ordered samosas but the waiter checked if we were vegan and warned us they weren't so got the onion bhaji instead which were delicious!

Okay first impression - Edit
I recently visited this restaurant on a trip to Taupo. I ordered a main dish and some flatbread on the side and both dishes were served very quickly. The flatbread was excellent and the eggplant and mushroom curry tasted okay, but was not particularly exciting. What I found quite disappointing was that they seemed to use canned rather than fresh mushrooms - in a dish were one of the two main ingredients was mushrooms. That said, I only tried one dish from the menu, so maybe this is an exception rather than the rule. Also, staff were super friendly, knew about vegan options and made me feel welcome.

Staffs were all friendly and kindly treated me. They also cleaned the tables very carefully. The taste of the vegan curry was delicious. I asked non-spicy curry and they perfectly accepted it. It’s the best Indian restaurant I ever visited.

Great restaurant - lots of vegan options ! - Edit
Had a great meal here. The staff were really lovely, very friendly and accommodating. We explained we were both vegan and they gave us lots of options to choose from. I also asked for a dish with no tomatoes and nothing was too much trouble. We chose a Tarkka daal and a saag Aloo as our mains and both were lovely and really tasty! Overall a great night and good value for money.

Lovely staff, lovely food - Edit
Staff can advise what can be made vegan. We wouldn't recommend the biryani, but everything else we had was very satisfying, especially the onion bhaji with tamarind sauce. Setting is quiet and quite romantic. Decent price and very filling.

Masterful - Edit
It's a rare pleasure to find any restaurant as satisfying as Master of India! The staff are knowledgeable about the menu and its ingredients, the dishes are lovingly crafted, and you'll be surprised how cheap the bill is when you come to pay.
Read moreThey're also great for vegan options. There are several delicious standard Indian choices, and other meals can be prepared with special instructions. On my last visit I told the manager that I love korma but don't eat dairy dairy, and he advised that it was possible to make something similar without cream. Despite not being on the menu, the vegetable madrasi was absolutely stunning (especially with hot Indian pickles).
I added Master of India to Happy Cow because of the fluency the staff have with vegan requirements - including thoughtful touches like recommending vegan breads. But I also added this place because the quality (and value) of the food is always excellent, likely the best of any restaurant in Taupo.
Pros: Lovely food, great value, Staff informed on vegan options, Flexible kitchen
Cons: Can be busy (not always)
