Vibe is immaculate - Edit
The vibe of this place is great!! Very calm and relaxed setting for eating. Somewhere you could sit and talk with someone for hours without feeling overstimulated. The food was great and creative. The plantain nachos were unique and unlike anything I’ve tried before. I also got the yucca fries which were delicious with the cilantro garlic dressing. The only thing I’d add as a con is the portions are quite small for the pricing.

Best vegan restaurant in Houston! - Edit
Vegans can do quite well eating out in Houston, where the culinary scene is competitive and many of the better carnivore restaurants have learned to include vegan options or at least know how to adapt dishes for vegan customers' requests. But there are not many vegan restaurants as such, and several of the vegan places that do exist lean into the "comfort food" menu of vegan versions of classic meat dishes, with lots of meat and cheese substitutes and far too much deep-fried food. Mantra is therefore an oasis! Houston's best vegan restaurant, hands down! A diverse menu that is very creative with textures and flavors. The coconut calamari is mind-blowing!

Mantra Kitchen: A Tranquil Vegan Escape - Edit
Mantra Kitchen is like the superhero of vegan dining – classy vibes, attentive staff, and food that'll make you question if you’re actually vegan. The Lions Mane Crab Cake is a flavor adventure, and their cheesecake deserves a standing ovation. Most vegan spots miss the mark on atmosphere, but not this place – it's the perfect date night choice. It's not just a restaurant; it's a vegan love affair waiting to happen.

Tasty food in a cool space - Edit
Delicious, innovative, well seasoned food.
Read more100% gluten & soy free menu.
Yucca fries were crispy & well seasoned. The accompanying cilantro garlic sauce, made in house, was good, yet not necessary for the fries to be enjoyable. Others feasted on coconut calamari, & black beluga lentils, kale & pepper filled Tex egg rolls as starters.
House made flatbreads provided base for pizza crusts, with various toppings. The Verde supreme, loaded with veggies, joined the buffalo jack (grilled jackfruit) and k-seoul (sauteed maitake mushrooms) as group favorites. The lioness, (lions mane mushroom crab cake) was tasty. Could have been more spicy, IMHO.
Raw strawberry hibiscus cheesecake was creamy, tasty.
Variety of herbal teas, sparkling flavored waters, kombucha, one gluten free beer, alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks.
Moderate to expensive pricing.
Clean, comfortable, convenient location in midtown Houston. Somewhat small, seats about 40. Clean, unisex bathrooms.
Restaurant opens at 6pm; metered on street parking is free after 6pm. There's a paid parking lot a block south. Convenient to public transportation.
We scheduled a meetup dinner for 20; large party, yes. Service was okay, but very slow. Did not expect this since we had made reservations. Thought they would bring in more staff for the evening.
Will probably return, just not with so large a group.
Pros: Tasty innovative 100% vegan food, Gluten free, Free on street parking
Cons: Limited hours , Very slow service

Beautiful artisan vegan food - Edit
Our first visit did not disappoint. Had the K- Seoul flatbread, prima penne, and balsamic Brussels sprouts. Everything was beautifully prepared with exquisite flavor. Our server was so gracious under fire with about 20 of us there for an event. Truly enjoyed the experience. Be prepared to park down the block on the street.

Good concepts for dishes - Edit
We enjoyed two small dishes at Mantra for a quick light dinner, and feel we may not have ordered well but we had a nice time with friendly service. Both dishes felt like they needed a bit more seasoning or spice to lift a great idea up to a great meal. We look forward to visiting again to try some other items!

Love this experience! - Edit
So far I’ve been twice, for my birthday and again for my brother’s! So grateful to have a vegan restaurant in Houston that has an upscale menu, and it’s a major plus that it’s Black-owned, the same owners as Green Seed Vegan, so they approach their food with the same intention as their first restaurant💚 I love that their entire menu is gluten- and soy- free, and have abundant options if you’re eating with someone who has nut allergies
Read moreThe first time: for appetizers we had (1) the margarita pizza, which was good, although the dough was very soft; (2) kale Caesar salad: the dressing on this was a little tart; and the sparkling rose lemonade is soo good and TASTES like roses!
For our mains we split: (1) the maitake chimichurri, my favorite dish in their menu as it has great depth of flavor— the sauce and millet that this dish comes with were excellent; and (2) the oyster mushroom marsala— which my brother loved, but I thought was okay, as the tougher stems of the mushroom were a bit challenging to chew
The second time: we tried the (1) coconut calamari that actually tastes like calamari (and is a little oily), (2) the grilled jackfruit sandwich, which is now my second favorite savory item on their menu (definitely get this if you don’t know what to get!!!), and the (3) crab cake sandwich, which didn’t taste as flavorful as the jackfruit sandwich, to me
Our cousin, who isn’t vegan, had the Texas egg roll and grilled jackfruit sandwich, both of which he said were so good he couldn’t talk until he finished eating😂
Both times we had the delicious (1) strawberry cheesecake, (just make sure they have a significant amount of jam/jelly on top), and (2) the oat milk ice cream — a good option for folks allergic to nuts (just ask for no pistachios), but not as flavorful as the cheesecake
Will be back again as my goal is to try everything on their abundant menu😊

Perfection in so many ways - Edit
Mantra is such an amazing find! We have been dining at Mantra regularly for the past few months each time brining new family members and friends and everyone loves the menu and has the best time. The appetizers, entrees and desserts are DIVINE, the staff is exceptionally kind and welcoming, the drink selection is superb whether you are looking for fantastic wines or a fun selection of teas. The music is so fresh I’ve created a Mantra playlist! Honestly love this place, the family and all the positive energy it brings to my life and the city of Houston! ✨✨

Date night at Mantra - Edit
My partner and I had a great time and a delicious meal at Mantra. We ordered the yucca fries, jackfruit buffalo pizza, and broccolini salad. The sauce served with the crispy yucca fries was excellent. Our buffalo pizza reminded me of the buffalo chicken pizza I used to eat at CiCi’s as a kid. (but wayyyyyyy better) I loved dressing on the salad as well and it was made with such fresh produce. We’ll definitely be back. 😋

Heavenly!!! - Edit
Four of us dined here for a birthday dinner. Two vegan/two non-vegan. We tried many different dishes and each of us tried one another’s dishes. Every bite of each dish was simply divine! I had jasmine tea - it was made with whole leaves in a tea press and it was absolutely delicious as well. We all highly recommend this place and will be back to try other dishes! Awesome staff and atmosphere. I only took pictures of me and my boyfriends food - wish I had taken pics of other dishes!❤️❤️❤️❤️ #Veganuary

This place is DOPE! - Edit
Mantra was AMAZING. It started off with a wonderful gentleman that was so helpful, super pleasant, and nice that felt like a lifelong friend. After looking at their 100% vegan and GF menu, I couldn’t decide what to get so we got a ton 🤪. The coconut calamari is phenomenal and seriously was, by far, the best vegan dish I’ve ever had! Egg rolls and the yucca fries were good. Plantain nachos were amazing as was the korean bbq tacos and penne!

Another Vegan Option in Houston! - Edit
Mantra is a sit-down table service vegan restaurant in Houston, something that we really need!
Read moreThey opened specially on a Wednesday night for a group of 18 men. We started ordering the appetizers and pizzas. The coconut calimari was astonishingly like the real thing, a bit less chewy. It was very tasty. Yucca fries were coated in some type of batter, crisp on the outside and almost like mashed potatoes on the inside. They were also good. The tex eggroll shell was a bit thicker than I like and was pretty greasy, but it was also good, especially with the sauce.
All the pizzas were creative and tasty, the gluten free crusts were very soft though a couple seemed undercooked.
I ordered the oyster mushroom marsala as my main dish. More than half of it was mycelium that was a little bit tougher than expected, but definitely edible. The marsala sauce was greasy yet tasty and there seemed to be a bit of breading on the mushrooms to get the sauce to stick.
My Buddy's ordered the "crabcake" that was made into a burger. Super good if you're into alt.burgers.
I'll give Mantra another go once all the grease has cleared my system. It would be a five star sensation with a few more heath conscious choices on the menu.
BTW the current website does not have a link to the menu, which apparently changes often. Perhaps they are working out the kinks in it.

Pros: 💯 vegan., Table service. Easy free street parking, Friendly accommodating staff
Cons: Mostly fried foods and pizzas.
