Best Fine Dining in Grand Rapids

Mangiamo is the latest, newest iteration of a building that has struggled to find its footing. Thankfully, they have finally stuck the landing. The building at 1033 Lake Drive has cycled through about three different restaurants over the past 10 years, and Mangiamo is the owner's latest attempt at a restaurant with staying power.

Mangiamo catches your eye from the street. The restaurant is located in a converted, old, three-story house. Once you are inside the moody, dark study ambiance seeps through every crevasse of the building. It feels like you are walking into a 1890's Gentlemen's cigar lounge, minus the smoke and misogyny. There is a waiting area fitted with wood-counter bar to order a drink while awaiting your seat. Make sure you have made a reservation for your seat because you will be staying at this bar otherwise.

The dinning area is a labyrinth of rooms and hallways. All adorned with lit candles. This is a restaurant with a candle budget.

The food is varied, with a mostly Italian cuisine focused menu. There is bread service, just make sure to ask for no butter. I ordered the Basalmic Vegan Chicken dish, and it was the best fine-dining dish I have had in Grand Rapids. And maybe the best vegan chicken breast I have ever had prepared. Unfortunately, there are no vegan dessert options. For drinks, they offer an overflow of cocktail and wine options.

After dinner, make sure not to leave before heading down the stairs to a hidden, cocktail lounge called Mo's Lounge. It is amazing how secluded this lounge is considering I could not hear the music from it playing at all while eating my meal on the ground floor. It is intimate and tight, but that appeals to the charm.

Mangiamo is an amazing dining experience. Honestly, it is a level I did not think existed in Grand Rapids, and one I have only experienced at larger cities. It has real staying power to fit a niche that is lacking in the GR restaurant scene. It is expensive, just know that going into it - it is fine-dining after all. I highly recommend Mangiamo for a romantic dinner you and your date will love!

Pros: Vegan Options, Gorgeous building and ambiance, Downstairs Cocktail lounge

Cons: Not entirely vegan
