Hitting their stride

This seems like the perfect spot for them. So much more inviting than the original spot. So much more consistent than when they were in the old lumpia spot. Air far the regular fries and regular tater tots have been a little soggy, but were okay in the loaded variety. I like they have impossible and beyond for burgers, and the “chicken” is good.

Pros: Choice of impossible or beyond , Chicken, Milkshakes

Cons: Regular fries and tots seem undercooked

Inconsistent and expensive

Being a loyal customer at Malibu's was short lived after they transitioned from a food truck to restaurant space. Their old space at Piedmont Ave. was good for about the first year but then the quality of food went down whether it was missing ingredients or cold food (more specifically the fries tots).

I have reached out various times to the owner about these inconsistencies and his only response was to offer a refund although I wasn't looking for one. Being a Afro-Latino owned business, I wasn't looking to deplete their funds but wanting them to improve their product so they have a sustainable business. Given that the owner doesn't seem to have those ambitions, I quit coming here which was for the best for my wallet.

I'd be very hesitant on coming here given the inconsistencies and high price point of their food. Also be weary about leaving a poor review on Yelp or Google because the owner is more than likely going to harass you for offering valid critiques.

Cons: Cold food, No substitutions for missing ingredients

New location on 23rd St Dec 2024

Really good food! Reasonably priced vegan burgers. Shakes and fries were delicious! Haven’t been here in a long time and they recently reopened on 23rd St and thought we would come check it out. New space looks nice.

We want to continue to support the all vegan establishments in the Bay Area. Vegan scene in Oakland is needing our support right now!

Malibu's Burgers

Meh. its just an impossible burger and they still managed to mess it up. everywhere I've dined in the Bay Area has been better than this and the staff was rude.

Good food - blah decore - inconsistent

I keep going between a 4 and 5 star rating depending on the service/food I get for the day. If you order the same thing twice in one week - chances are you will get something slightly different each time. It depends on who is in the kitchen and if they have the products on hand.
Examples include: asking for a certain sauce and not getting it on your order or getting something different, cold food when you dine in, the photographs they post on social media are different from what you receive (like toppings, condiments).

My main complaint is the inconsistency with the food and service. I have had great food and those are 5 star days for sure. There have been days when I had to send back food because it was wrong or our food was cold - cold fries are not good. There have been times when I have had to show the person at the register the item I wanted on my phone (Instagram) because they do not know the updated menu/new items. The menu never reflects what is sold out or updated.

I really like the chicken sandwiches, fries and shakes. My boyfriend really likes the burgers. If only they could work out the kinks - I would give them a 5.

Burger and fries

Got the Needy Meaty and Bottom Fries for $30 💀 food was good but for that price I would rather dirty my kitchen and make burgers and fries for $30. First tried them in 2020 and didn’t go because it was like $200 for meals for 3. I decided to give them another shot and I cannot justify coming back again haha. Good food though

Guilty pleasure

All the greasy goodness you used to love from real meat, but with way better flavor combinations

Pros: Buns are amazing, Love the options, Love that menu changes frequently

Cons: Inside definitely needs to be fixed, Milkshake flavor isnt great, Fries would be better if cooked longer

Good food but meh experience

Everything tasted pretty great but I don’t think I’d go back. The experience was really stressful; the interior is kind of bleak and there’s really limited seating. The menu doesn’t have any information on it so you can’t tell what differentiates any burger from another. The staff couldn’t really tell me either – possibly they were new? So we just picked one at random. The menu needs a redesign to make more sense and that would go a long way. We asked to eat there but got everything in a to go bag with a single napkin, no utensils, which made everything really messy and hard to eat.

The prices are super high which I understand in this economy and for quality vegan food but the negative ambience and poor dining experience meant I don’t think I’d return very soon.

Needs improvement

I'm updating this to note that the owner originally responded to my 3 star review with personal attacks, then accused me of having ulterior motives, said that I'm lying, and then made multiple more uncomfortable remarks that I will not go into detail about here. All this was unexpected and hurtful. He then said to contact them for a refund but never returned any of the calls or emails. Im changing it to 2 stars now for the really terrible customer service.

Original review:
It cost $70 for two people to each get a burger, tater tots, and small shakes. They were out of fries. Aside from price and stock issues, there's a lot of room for improvement. They ask if the meal is for here or to go, but if you choose to dine in they don't give plates or silverware. We were given the food in a to-go bag at the front. It seemed like they were mainly equipped for delivery/pickup which was disappointing since we came a long way to dine in.

The building was surprisingly bare, it felt like they recently moved in but didn't fully finish setting up for customers. Menu didn't have descriptions for many items. The lack of service combined with unclear menu, no plates, no silverware, no cups, empty building with no decor, was all odd. It almost didnt feel like I was dining in at a restaurant..

The Malibu Burger was good but didn't stand out compared to cheaper vegan burger chains like VeganBurg, Next Level Burger, etc. The tater tots were too salty, milkshakes were underfilled and tasted like another flavor got mixed in by accident.

Pros: Brioche bun was great, Fully vegan menu 🌱

Cons: No plates or silverware dining in, Very expensive, So salty

This was exactly our experience too. Nothing on the menu is explained and the staff couldn’t explain anything either. We asked to eat there and got everything in a to go bag (with one single napkin.) We had no idea how any of the burgers were different from another. Everything tasted pretty good but the experience wasn’t at all relaxing or good. Maybe we had new staff?

I think an update of the menu to be clearer about what is what would go a long way.

100% agree. They were good as a food truck & as a restaurant the first 2 months but quality in service and Ingredients vastly fell off as time went by. I have no incentive to try their new spot in Downtown Oakland

Fckn Delicious

First of all the Ube 🍠 Oatly milkshake 💯🎉😋 WOW!! Need a larger size of that!

Second got the Tasha grande which is like a big Mac/whopper thing. I figured out my own hack😜. Got the double which is $3 upcharge. Then substituted one burger patty for good catch phish fillet. Omitted the onions 🤢. When i received my burger i simply had a burger AND an open faced phish sandwich. 🎉🎉 For only $3 more. Both yumm.

I ordered some fried Oreos but didn't receive them. I'm sure they are tasty toooooo.

OMG UBE SHAKE!!!

Pros: Honestly it's damn good.

Cons: Still hoping vegan places will start air frying!!, Delicious but not WFPB

Vegan Junk Food in Oakland via Delivery

Next time I’ll go in-person, ordering via a third party app wasn’t the best decision, as the food wasn’t as fresh I am sure it could be - but my meal was still satisfying!

Ordered: Black Vanilla Shake which was yummy (minus melty upon arrival), La Lulu Chick'n Sandwich (no onions, sauce on side - but sauce was missing) w/Hella Hella Straight Cut Fries. Thankfully I had organic mustard/ketchup so it made the sandwich tastier!

They didn’t have the Tempura Fried Oreos so they were kind enough to call me and offered me an Oreo Shake instead, which I put in the freezer to enjoy later!

Overall - good experience and I would try them again.

Pros: All Vegan/Plant-Based, Friendly Service/Personnel, Delicious Vegan Milkshakes

Cons: Spendy (Expensive), Delivered Food Not as Fresh

I loved the options at this place. The burger was juicy and good and the burger bun was like a cloud. I finished my meal off with the Cookie Monster Ube Milkshake and it was glorious.

Pros: Great options, Love Milkshakes, Great vibe

Cons: A little pricey, but it’s also California. Lol

Fresh, tasty, filling burgers, lots of variety

I have wanted to taste what the fuss is all about for a long time, as numerous local non-vegs and foodies have raved about Malibu's Burgers . I ordered my meal for pick up and appreciated the detailed list of options presented in a clear, drop-down menu. My notification promised the order in 25 minutes, but I received a text that it was ready in barely 10, which was great! I ordered the La Lulu Chick'n Sandwich, which did not seem to be as humongous a portion as described by others. However, it was very good, nice combo of flavors, fresh-tasting and satisfying. I ate the entire sandwich, and found it very filling! I also ordered the regular fries, which were very ordinary, not crispy enough and accompanied by little packets of non-organic, not really recyclable ketchup ( Though all of the other packaging was 100% compostable, much appreciated!). I know this is the Bay Area, but $20 for a burger and basic fries does seem a little bit high. If some of the price point comes from organic ingredients, would be nice to know. ( plus they are a few block down from Timeless, so you can pick up dinner and dessert in one trip!)

Pros: timely and efficient ordering process, lots of choices and options, food tasted freshly made

Cons: a bit expensive, even for the Bay area, included not requested, nonorganic ketchup packets

BEST vegan burger/sando joint in the Bay!!

Been vegan now for 4 years and let me tell you, I have "rediscovered" the best vegan burger/sando joint in the Bay. I actually ate Malibu's before during last years pandemic. They were still just food truck (more like a special ed. short bus w/ a kitchen lol). Seen an IG promo where they were giving a free vegan milkshake w/ any purchase. I got their Malibu burger at the time, it was good. Their burger patty tasted like it was marinate in teriyaki or soy sauce w/ their "mama" sauce (taste like a vegan version of the In & Out spread).

Fast forward to today to their brick & mortar...their Malibu has been refined where u taste more of the "mama" sauce than the teriyaki from before. Still served on soft brioche bread w/ caramelized onions, chef's kiss. 😗👌🏾Now let's get to their "La Lulu" chik'n sando (it's like chicken club sando)!! OMG!! Many vegan spots have tried to imitate a "chicken sandwich," many have fell short. I can't put my finger on which sando it imitates (it's been awhile) but it's like if Popeye's crispy/crunchiness and Burger King OG long chicken sando "white meat" had a vegan child. Lol I modified it so it was that classic lettuce, tomato, and mayo "chicken sandwich" like Wendy's. The vegan bacon added an extra flavor but didn't hinder the target profile I was aiming for. Definitely my favorite item...so far.

"Malibu sounds perfect." I wouldn't say that...there is a con. Just like "most" vegan restaurants, there's an inflation of prices on the menu. I get it tho, vegan restaurants gotta hit their targeted margins. They don't get the mass sells they would get from animal products which majority of society consumes. So the "Malibu Burger" (single Impossible patty) was $16 and "La Lulu" was $14...both with no fries or a drink. I know. Now if they dropped both items about a reasonable $3, now where in the ballpark where portion size exceeds pricing (because their fairly above average in portion size).

But overall, it's still 5 stars for me because their menu targets that classic burger joint menu which brings nostalgia. So if your from/in (for vacation) the Bay, stop by Malibu's Burger in Oakland. 👍🏾👍🏾

*Update: Ate this TWICE this month, the Tasha Grande. Their rendition of the Big Mac. Oh the nostalgia, haven't ate in over 4 years. I know the Big Mac is an acquired taste but I use to LOVE it. Malibu's was on point! 🎯 $19 to make it double patty. Might seem a lot but the price point matches the size because that thang a mouf-ful Lol

Updated from previous review on 2021-12-28

Pros: Variety of options

Cons: Prices above average.
