The best Mediterranean I’ve ever had - Edit
There are plenty of vegan entrees and side dishes including gallaba, falafel, grape leaves, lentil soup, and more. The dishes are hearty and satisfying, with massive portions guaranteeing leftovers. The baklava is even made with simple syrup instead of honey. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about dietary restrictions and recommended several dishes. We will definitely visit again the next time we’re in town!

Not Truly Vegan - Edit
Nothing on the menu is actually vegan. They cook their falafel in the same grease as chicken. They cook everything in the same grease basket. The falafel sandwich is cooked on the same grill as meat. I thought about ordering a salad and I was told by the waiter that the cook may or may not change his gloves that have touched meat for me as they were busy. I called back a week later to check with a different person to give them one more chance and was told the exact same thing on how they prepare the food. Only eat here if you do not care about cross contamination.
Read morePros: Staff was honest about how they cook the food.
Cons: They cross contaminate all of their food. , Nothing is vegan here.

WOW - Edit
I don't normally gravitate towards this kind of food, but I am sure glad I tried it!! The ghallaba and taboulleh were phenomenal, and you get a lot of food for the money.

Delicious Options - Edit
The garlic and almond rice ghallaba is a must try! My husband and I didn’t really know what to expect and we both were impressed with the flavor. So freakin good! We also got the falafel plate with fries and the falafel was so good and not too dry like some places. We started with hummus and it is probably the best I’ve ever had. We both had the lentil soup and that was great too! We loved everything and will definitely return to try more!

Good but greasy - Edit
Lentil soup is out of this world! The main dish I got, ghallaba, was really greasy and had french fries in it (I'm not sure if that is normal for this dish or not). It was tasty, but I probably won't go back because of the greasiness.

I love this place! When we lived in Birmingham we went there often and now every time we come back to visit we have to stop at Makarios to eat. The prices are amazing and the food is great!!! I always get the spinach hummus wrap with fries.

A local gem - Edit
I eat at Makario's about once a week. I frequented their south side location and was thrilled to move right next to the Vestavia location. The veggie ghallaba sandwich is my favorite item but I also love the falafel wrap or burger, fatoosh salad, and they have the best hummus in town. Friendly and welcoming. It never seems like being vegan is a burden to the servers. I would recommend this to anyone who loves authentic Greek food with tons of vegan options.

Great Late-Night Spot - Edit
Makario's has an incredibly friendly staff and a wonderful selection of vegan food! It always takes me a while to order because I have so many choices. The hummus, garlic veggie gallabah, falafel burger, fries, tahini sauce, smoothies, and juices are all fantastic, and they've got the best lentil soup in town. Bonus: they're open late on weekends, a rarity for most restaurants in Birmingham!

I came here on a date. The atmosphere was perfect and our waiter was friendly and willing to orient us to the vegan menu items. The food was so good. We split an entree but ended up ordering a little extra hummus.

Tasty and Affordable - Edit
Like many middle eastern restaurants, this place had plenty of options from falafel to lentils, and a really tasty fatoosh salad. Not fancy, a little dingy, but affordable and filling. I'd go back again. We got the veggie combo w/o the yogurt (tahini instead).

Great hummus, very casual setting - Edit
We were passing thru Birmingham and stopped for a quick dinner. Huge portions! Be forewarned. The dinner plates are quite sufficient, if not too much for one person. We had the hummus (smooth and rich), somosa (not sure they fit the genre but they were excellent), falafal dinner and veggie combo dinner (falafal, stuffed grape leaves, lentil thing, spinach pie). The falafal was very good (not the best ever wrt rich flavor); the spinach pie was so-so, grape leaves ok, and lentil thing uniquely flavored but seemed overcooked/stale/been stewing all day.
Read moreWait staff were polite and responsive. Ambiance was comfortable but very casual (fast-food-esque). Bathrooms were disgusting (unclean, needing repair and smelling strongly of stale urine.)
I recommend it for a quick dinner. The falafal sandwich looks like a choice I should have made.
Pros: Good, quick food, Polite, responsive wait staff
Cons: Restroom facilities are gross

Very good! - Edit
Makarios is a veg-friendly restaurant in the heart of Five Points, which makes it convenient to UAB and the entertainment district. It is family-owned, and you can tell they take pride in their restaurant. Every time I have been there, it has been very clean, but the decor is a little "here and there", like they couldn't decide what direction to take it. Part middle-eastern, part southern kitsch. The food is great, and I HIGHLY recommend their crushed lentil soup. They also have wonderful hummus and are very generous with the pita bread. Their chicken is always cooked well, with just the right amount of spice, and their staff is very friendly. If you are looking to go to lunch there on a week-day, be prepared to wait on a table, as it is a very popular spot for staff of UAB hospital, students, and UAB faculty and staff.
