Need to put more thought into their vegan menu - Edit
This is my go-to café for coffee on a Sunday morning after a run.
Read moreThey do have some vegan sweets (the Toblerone bar apparently is vegan!) . They have all the alternative milk options, though that is nowadays almost standard in Melbourne.
This time, we went there for dinner, and I wanted something warm (not just a salad) (and even only one of the salad options was vegan). They cater for a lot of dietary requirements. Several menu items are marked dairy-free or gluten free, but too few are vegan.
For example, I can't have their pasta dishes, even the veggie ones, because their pastas have egg in them! They have one 'Cauliflower Steak' but even that is not vegan because the Romanesco sauce had milk in it. They replaced it for me with beetroot hummus, which was good, but the whole dish was still not a full meal and didn't come with fries, like the other steaks did. As a result, their 'cauliflower Steak' still probably had maybe at most 350 calories, while the chicken Parma that my husband had probably had about 1000 or more, _and_ he got fries with it. Some of their small dishes/entrees are vegan but were sold out when we were there. They have nothing with pulses (chickpeas, lentils, beans).
Come on, Main Street Café, you can do better. It is not so hard to get some pasta without eggs, or to have a tub of vegan cream sitting around to make vegan creamy dishes. And do treat your steak options equally.
Pros: Very friendly staff, Very helpful trying to find alternatives , Vegan chocolates treats
Cons: All pastas had egg in them , Cauliflower steak didn't come with sides, Nothing with chickpeas or lentils
Tiggy
From what you say I don’t think they have any interest in making their menu any less abusive to animals.

3.5 out of 4⭐️ - Edit
Im always torn about this place. We have been a lot over the years because it's our local and it's my husbands favourite place. We go more for breakfast but sometimes for dinner. They don't accommodate to vegans very well imo. But, what they do, they do well. There is almost always a long wait even if they aren't busy. The breakfast offerings are a healthy nourish bowl or porridge. Last time I tried the nourish bowl and it was surprisingly delicious and filling but as usual with cafes, they removed the dairy, didn't replace it with anything vegan and still charged the full amount. So my go to breakfast is a bunch of side dishes that they have told me are Vegan and it's pretty impressive. For a total of $19 I got 2 slices of toast, Sauteed spinach, blistered tomatoes, roast mushrooms and 2 hash browns. Sometimes it's big tomatoes, sometimes it's sliced mushrooms but it's always tasty and filling. I wish they would just put this as a vegan big breakfast on the menu.
