Authentic Indian Food Close to the seashore

I gotta tell you, it was the name at this café that peaked my interest big time. Madras Café: Kinda cute, don’t you think?

As a big lover of South Indian vegetarian food (being ethnically Sinhalese myself), I am pretty discerning on my South Asian grub. The dosa at Madras café was yummy with not too much ghee plus crispy, just the way I like it. The masala stuffing was good. The condiments of white coconut chutney and tomato red chutney and the raitas (yoghurt dip like tziki) were so flavourful and fresh. What I really enjoyed was the sambar which was fresh and spicefully delightful to my Asian palate. I could have indeed been in Madras for this brunch meal as it was so genuinely South Indian.

For a beverage, I had the fresh mango juice. I must say that the mangoes are so sweet and fresh in Ao Nong, Thailand. I have yet to have a sour mango in my month long stay here either via a drink or cut fruit. So bring on those mangoes in Ao Nong ! I topped off my meal with a masala chai which was made to perfection and very authentic with the right touch of cardamoms that I mulled with delight. You gotta love cardamoms - so good for ones digestion!

My meal selection was perfect for a light brunch before I took a high tide dip and got to my media filming work post lunch. I felt light and happy in the sea with a belly filled by Madras Café. Thank you! Muah, muah, muah …

A notable feature at The Madras Café is it offers a good wine selection of old and new world wines, plus a full bar. It’s a fully air-conditioned dining operation with an upscale décor yet a relaxed overall vibe. I love the traditional Indian sitar music playing in the background incorporating the tunes of Ajit Singh. It gave the restaurant a very authentic and chill feel for me as an eternal music junkie.

The staff are prompt and professional in their service. The meals do not take too long to reach your dining table, which I like a lot.

The vegetarian recommendations from the chef are: paneer butter masala, yellow dahl, paneer tikka, vegetable jalfrezi, aloo jera, tomato uttapam, mixed vegetable uttapam and masala dosa.

For dessert try the pudding kheer, mango sticky rice and gulab jamun which all came highly recommended by the chef.

This restaurant runs open from 11 am to 12 midnight with the last order at 1130am.

Have a lovely authentically Indian evening and a very fresh meal at this by highly recommended dining spot.

Bon appetite folks … enjoy Madras cafe.

Pros: Authentic and fresh food , Good service , Nice atmosphere

Cons: Food could be hotter / warmer when served, Needs kulfi on the menu , More smiles with service

Awesome place!

I had the mixed vegetable Masala and plain naan. The Indian food menu (they also have a Thai menu) is split into vegetable and non vegetable, and the staff is knowledgeable about vegan requirements. Double check when ordering just to be sure.

Great dosas

We had the masala dosas and vegetable dosas with added Sambar for lunch. Very tasty. Waiter was knowledgeable on what vegan was and what was in the dishes.

Pros: Great service, Vegan options on request / clarification

Cons: Western prices , No clear vegan option on menu
