Delicious food and friendly staff

We've been to Lovely Hut restaurants all over the world, and this is probably the biggest. The menu is extensive -- but the best things are the Vietnamese dishes. Although the prices are a bit more than you'd usually pay in Vietnam, the setting makes for a nice change from the smaller vegan restaurants around the city. The staff are really, really friendly as well, and when you're done eating, you can go upstairs to shop in their vegan store. If you're lucky they'll have Daiya cheese from the States! For food, I'd recommend, the Vietnamese papaya salad, aptly named "vegan scrap", and wheat gluten in satay sauce. Yum!

Pros: Extensive menu, friendly staff, Good dining atmosphere

Cons: Hard to find, Not too cheap, Small portions

Apologies : ) realised that this is not the District 1 location of Loving Hut and moved review.

We have been going to Loving Hut for the past 6 months regularly after a long break. When it first opened about 10 years ago, we went a couple of times and then returned again only recently.

We enjoyed the vibrant local feel (it is always full and cheerful) and the menu is huge and extensive which caters for any mood.

We enjoy the Vietnamese dishes especially and ones which would be more time consuming or difficult to make at home. The flavours are balanced and delicious and the presentation is always good.

The staff are very attentive and friendly, despite so many people being there, are always at the ready to assist. The male staff wear endearing black suits and the female staff lovely Ao Dai (traditional Vietnamese dresses) and it gives the overall air of being invited as a special guest to someone's home.

They quality of the dishes is always consistently good and everything we have tried, we have enjoyed - we have tried a lot of the menu (but have not tried any of the Western type dishes). The portions are generous and the noodle soups for lunch are very well priced.

The special treat highlight is the vegan ice cream made especially for the restaurant and we always look forward to it at the end of a meal. The coconut (with pieces of coconut) and durian flavours are our favourites. : )

There is a new "who's who" wall of famous vegetarians as you enter the restaurant on the right. Included of course is Buddha - I was surprised to also see Jesus there too.

It gets very busy on the new moon / full moon nights as families go out especially for vegetarian meals, so booking is advised for busy nights / weekends.

There is a shop upstairs with products, but unfortunately, instead of the produce being locally sourced from Vietnam (there are great macrobiotic foods available here), it is all from the US and includes very expensive products - some from Trader Joe's and others from Costco (Kirkland brand). Hope this will change in the future : )

Pros: happy, festive, nostalgic atmosphere, favourful food and huge menu to choose from, very good value

Cons: might need to book on busy nights, overpriced imported items in the store upstairs

Not the best Loving Hut experience...

My Loving Hut experience here was comparable to that I had in the Hanoi branch - overall, pretty underwhelming.

It's a small place, nothing fancy, pretty hard to find in a district that most people passing by won't venture to. However, it's nearby where I work so I thought I'd give it a go.

The waitress there was really polite and even with her limited English was very accommodating to me and my friend. It was, however, a little annoying that 4 out of 5 dishes we ordered were unavailable and it took her a good 15-20 minutes to come back and tell us. This is pretty common in Vietnam and, unfortunately, is rather annoying. So, we didn't get off to a great start.

Having said that, the menu is extensive and reasonably priced, like the other Loving Huts I've been to in Vietnam, but the vast majority of it seemed to be unavailable. In the end, I went with a vegan pizza, which was fairly good - not out of this world, but okay. Not sure what they use in substitute of cheese - it was a little creamy, like a béchamel sauce - I hope it was vegan. As for my friend, she wasn't very impressed with her food.

I'd say go to the Loving Hut in D1...much better atmosphere, more attentive staff (see my review on Loving Hut Hoa Dang) and personally I enjoyed my experience there a lot more.

Pros: Extensive menu, as most Loving Huts have, Reasonably priced

Cons: Hard to find, Alot of items on the menu were unavailab, le, not very nice atmosphere

Small Beauty In HCMC

I live in HCMC and it was a bit tricky to find for the cab driver but worth it. English is spoken and the small menu had a gooď choice. Most expensive item on the menu is 40000 dong or 2 US dollars. Inside had seating for 20+ people. It is very clean and tidy and very nicely decorated. I will be back...often.

Pros: Cheap, Clean, Pleasant

Cons: Tricky To Find
