Hidden gem

The food is great, freshly made and tastes like at home. The place supports vegan initiatives and artists and offers a space for vegan community events. Absolutely recommended. Towards the end of the day some items on the menu may be gone because they want to prevent food waste.

Pros: Artwork by vegan artists, Friendly staff, Beautiful space

Lovely place

Great tasting food, not too expensive -- servings aren't ridiculously large like in some places, but are enough to satisfy. Helpful staff, too.

Cons: relativ kleine Portionen

Special but nice

It‘s located behind the Hauptstraße.
It‘s quite charming in its reduced way.
Had chili sin carne as Eintopf of the day.
I made it more spicy for me and the portion is not that big, but I liked the atmosphere next to the (vegan) books.
Staff was nice!

Pros: All vegan, Dishes and sweats, All freshly cooked

Cons: Had to search a bit to find it, Small portions (at least mine was small)

Great vegan food (100% vegan menu) and friendly staff - highly recommended

I found this place when I visited Erlangen in February 2020. They have great vegan food with a different menu every day. After dining there on my first night in Erlangen, I went back every night to eat there and loved every meal I had. All the food was 100% vegan and they have a large section of educational material, books about veganism etc. Great place!

The place is something between a community centre and a restaurant - one night a local community group had an event in a separate section of the restaurant. I liked the atmosphere there, food was outstanding and the staff superfriendly. The atmosphere is casual and very welcoming - it's just probably not the right place if you are after a place for a romantic dinner or vegan fine dining.
Pricing is very reasonable, great value for money.

If you are not familiar with the area, it's a bit difficult to find - from the main street, you have to walk through a courtyard (no sign from the main street) to find the place. It's close to Erlangen station and if you are in the area, I can highly recommend this place!

Pros: Excellent food (100% vegan), Great value for money , Very friendly staff

Cons: It's a bit difficult to find (see review)

Cozy, community-based venue with small, but affectionately creative menu.

Daily and sometime weekly changing main dishes and desserts, always freshly cooked, organic, seasonal and as regional as possible. Standard items are vegan burgers, also adapted to the season. Fair trade coffee and tea. Homemade cake, and in the summer, lemonade or iced tea. Friendly staff and fair rates, down to earth atmosphere. You can grab one of the dozens of veganism-related books they have in stock. Brunch on Sundays once a month. Would always come back.

Pros: organic, seasonal, regional, fair trade and fresh

Cons: closed on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays

Good tasting meals, huge library with vegan books

I had the daily menu - Sri Lanka dhal with rice. The meal tasted good. Although, the portion was a bit small. While you wait for your meal, you can read a book from a really large choice of vegan books.

"Six stars", down-to-earth, high quality

Down-to-eath, quite large space 5 mins walk f/ central train station. Tons of books conc. vegan topics. Brillant food (one dish of the day, one burger, cake, coffee, lemonades). "Real" food, tastes fresh and no-nonsense very, very good. Coffee is very good, too, same for the cake. Call to check if food is still available in the afternoon. Separate dish in the evening after 5:30 p.m.. Friendly staff.

Pros: Excellent food quality, many books on veganism & animal rights, quiet, nice location

Yummy cafe

Was there on a Saturday when they have the normal cafe business. Had a very yummy soup and then a slice of cake and a coffee. They had different plantbased milks to choose from. It was all very yummy. The book shelf is very impressive - if you're looking for anything on veganism, you can surely find it there.

Nice place to spend time, good vegan food!

You'd definitely have to know that this café is a non profit project to build a variety of vegan options in Erlangen. All the people there work for free in their spare time and you feel it, when you are there - very friendly and good-to-talk-to people, offering help where they can :)

Great to have but needs improvement

I think it's great that Erlangen finally has a vegan restaurant. Unfortunately, I wasn't very impressed by the food though (Burger tasted a bit sour, cake was rather dry), nor did I like the feel of the place (very cold atmosphere). However, the little exhibition of books (vegan and vegetarian cookbooks, and other books related to veganism) is fantastic and you can browse through them while waiting for your food or having a coffee. Altogether, I'll give it 3 Happy Cows and would love to see some improvements in the food. I'll definitely give it another try.

Pros: 100% vegan, books

Cons: food needs improvement, cold atmosphere

First vegan location in Erlangen

The Lesecafe "Anstaendig essen" was founded in August 2012 as a temporary project of the Erlangen Adult Ecuation Center and the regional group of the German Vegetarian Society, and focused on sustainability aspects in nutrition. It offered lots of events, and more than 150 books on display in the Cafe provided additional information. Because of its success the Lesecafe was not closed at the end of the project period, but is now run by a new owner on a permanent basis. In principle the concept did not change, the new owner plans to set up new events and the books are still part of the concept. The menu offers a small range of permanent dishes, including miso soup and a veggie burger and cakes, and is accompanied by daily changing offers. There is a special lunch offer and prices are moderate. This is the more remarkable, as there is a strong focus on ecologic and regional products and fair trade aspects. Even though the Lesecafe is located in a somewhat run down environment in the surroundings of a city center supermarket and in its look and feel still reminds of the salesroom which it was before, it is a most welcome enrichment of the Erlangen gastronomy, where no other vegan location exists at all. We will certainly make the Lesecafe our favourite eating out place.

Pros: good value, friendly staff, only vegan place in town
