Told no vegan options - Edit
We asked for vegan options but was told they didn't have any.

Nope - Edit
Hate to give a 1 star but I really wish I wouldn't have gone. Nice staff though. The veggie burger is just a patty of mashed potatoes. It was only seasoned enough to give it color. And it was served with fries. The fries were good.
Read moreMy friend had the curry a few days prior and said it sucked. Maybe they're better with meat. Sure they had edible food that can be made vegan but I don't think they should be on this list.
Pros: Exists , Nice staff, Big portion but...
Cons: Bland , Redundant, Not worth the price

Worth a visit! - Edit
Definitely worth a visit. They are one of a handful of places that actually have decent options. Good coconut milkshakes!

Wouldn't go back - Edit
When we got there a bit past 7 pm, there was only one couple, and even though it took Ages for our food to arrive, nobody else came in. We just ordered two plates of spaghetti and a strawberry shake, and it took about an hour! The strawberry shake was not really a shake, more like a slushee that tasted so artificial that we had to leave most of it. There were vegetarian dishes on the menu, but the food wasn't good - someone must have added some curry powder to our tomato sauce.
Read moreThe place is decorated like a beach cafe, but there are neighbours sitting outside and random people constantly walking in and out of the place and its kitchen. The latter really made me question how hygenic the kitchen was....
Pros: Low Price, Vegetarian Options, Cute decoration
Cons: Long wait time, Strange tasting food, Randoms walking in and out of the kitchen.

Best meal in Stone Town - Edit
The title says it all. This was the tastiest meal I had in my 5 days in Stone Town. I got the vegetable curry Bunny Chow and the banana pineapple coconut juice. Delicious and unique!

Good Food and Smoothie - Edit
We had a really good meal here. The coconut milk smoothies we got were delicious. Reasonable prices. Only down side was it took a really long time to get our food after ordering.

An unexpected winner - Edit
Only three restaurants in Stone Town were recommended to veg*ns. Lazuli was initially the least-favoured as it was principally a non-veg menu. Having said that, we were pleasantly surprised by this clean, bright and homely eatery.
Read moreMy partner chose a chickpea, avocado and mango salad that looked colourful, fresh and inviting. She devoured the salad with relish. I chose the chickpea curry with rice and it was similarly fresh and appetising.
The juices and smoothies were very good and everything was reasonably priced. It was so refreshing to find a non-veg food outlet whose veg*n dishes were adventurous.
Lazuli was clearly the stand out eatery for vegan food in Stone Town (which is slightly bizarre given the majority of its menu is non-veg). One can only hope that as time passes, their menu will increase in vegan options.
POST SCRIPT:
Hummous is on the Lazuli menu but only after some questioning did we discover that they use cow's milk as an ingredient. Awareness of veganism in Zanzibar seemed incredibly low and was typically equated with vegetarian.

Nice place and menu, but reality a bit different.. - Edit
The Lazuli is highly recommended on TripAdvisor so we had very big expectations, but maybe we were just unlucky.. We ordered some juices and mains. My vegan chickpea burger contained mayonnaise (even though upon order we asked a waiter whether the food was vegan). We had some other challenges such as waiting time which was over an hour only for 4 drinks.
Read moreThe staff was friendly though, but for us it was definitely not a good experience. I believe we were just unlucky as the place had a such a good reputation. I hope it was just a bad day.
If you still decide to check it out, I would recommend to double-check about the ingredients upon order as it seems that they put mayonnaise in most of the foods. Also be probably ready for a long waiting time. Otherwise the place has a nice atmosphere, it's cozy and the prices are ok.
Pros: good location, cozy place, friendly staff
Cons: too long waiting time, not very tasty food , lack of understanding of vegan friendly

Nice place, needs more vegan awareness - Edit
Excellent blended juices, try mango + banana. Beware, the hummus is made with mayonnaise.
