A vegan take on French food

While I can't say this was the most spectacular vegan dinner I've ever had, I truly appreciated Kristine's sincere effort to veganize the incredibly animal-heavy food of France. It's nice to have a special 'date night" sort of restaurant offer vegan food. As much as I love our more casual vegan spots around town, sometimes it's nice to get dressed up just a little.

In my experience, French restaurants phone it in with some lackluster vegan pasta entree, but I thought Kristine's made an actual effort to offer vegans something unique and special to order. We started with the shiitake and hazelnut mousse, which was lusciously creamy and smooth. The "vegan entree" was a pepper stuffed with braised chickpea purée, miso, soy sauce, tomato, zucchini, and pepper served over a kale & fennel salad. While it was tasty, and certainly more thoughtful than the usual "pasta avec legumes" it was a little light to be a full dinner entree. I think they should have added some grains or something to round it out. All in all, a nice date night out.

My biggest critique is that there are no vegan desserts besides sorbet, which on a cold winter night, is not super enticing. We paid the check and walked up the street to the Bent Spoon for one of their FABULOUS vegan hot chocolates.

All in all, I hope Kristines is encouraged to continue to expand on their plant-based French offerings because if they do it right, they'd be doing something really, really special.

Pros: Clearly marked vegan options, Some unique vegan offerings

Cons: No vegan desserts besides sorbet (meh), Would like to see more vegan options
