You get what you pay for

With the great Coffee &Beans shut down, Jyväskylä is left with only one vegan place and this does not really do the job. It serves nothing more than school canteen food and even if it is healthy and home-made, the taste and presentation are pretty sad.
The staff is kind, but the general atmosphere is quite eery: with no background music, people eat in silence hearing each other's cutlery. Not a favourite .

Herkullinen opiskelijaravintola

Pros: Kokonaan vegaaninen paikka, Opiskelijahinnat, Herkulliset maut

Very good restaurant

Popular under students because of the cheap meals (€2,95) when you have a Finnish student card. As a main you can either choose soup or a hot meal and in addition you take salad, bread, water and either coffee/tea or dessert. You can have seconds for no extra charge. Food is really good. I ate potato-bean-brussel sprouts casserole with red cabbage and a salad with sprouts and something i assume was pea dip. Their weekly menu can be seen on the website

Very tasty bread

One of my go-to student lunch places, especially the bread is amazing, but the stews/curries are also good

Pasta was a bit disappointing

My colleague had soup and it looked tasty. They’re famous for their soups. The penne pomodoro I had were overcooked and too much sauce.

Pros: Location, affordable prices

Cons: Little variety

Good for a filling lunch

The menu is limited and all dishes are rather simple, but everything was tasty and ended up a good deal for the price. The buffet style means that one can get free refills, and there are also drinks included. Overall, it is a place worth visiting.

Pros: 100% vegan, Good deal, Convenient location

Cons: Limited choice of dishes

Good lunch restaurant for students

Fully vegan restaurant. Would recommend for lunch, good soups. Could have bigger menu to achieve 4 stars.

Love this place!

I can't fully explain why - but I love this place! The decor and basic setup of their lunch haven't changed for as long as I remember, so you'll be eating your intensely predictable lunch surrounded by almost psychedelic pink flower wallpaper. That said, for 7 e you get a lunch comprising a drink, salad, Katriina's fantastic homemade bread rolls, as much soup as you can eat, as well as coffee or a small dessert (usually fruit salad or compote). There are three different vegan soups every day, neither of which are particularly exciting or interestingly seasoned, but I still often find myself craving them - maybe because it's rare to find affordable vegan food that is super healthy but in the simplest and least pretentious way possible. They do serve cow's milk but only because it is a legal requirement for being able to offer a student discount - everything else is vegan as far as I'm aware.

UPDATE: They've changed the decor now (not sure whether it's for the better) but the menu and concept has stayed the same (yay!). They're now open on Saturdays as well.

delicious soup for lunch

Used to go here often when studying, since the price with student card is insanely cheap for lunch! Daily soups are really tasty and fulfilling with bread and salad, would recommend for everyone for healthy lunch. Almost completely vegan, serves only dairy for drinking I think.

Pros: delicious and healthy food, fair price for lunch (cheap for students), daily varying soup options

Cons: often crowded, serves dairy

Safe and tasty choice

Katriina used to be my first choice when i studied in Jyväskylä. Soup lunch is cheap for a student (2,60e) and 6e if you're not. There are three options for veggie mash soups and one which is more like soup than a mash. You may refill your plate as many times as you want. You may add peanuts, salt and tabasco in your soup as well. Fresh sprouts in salad every day.

This place has best bread buns of all the student-lunch places. Tastes really good with soup.

Has a lot of places to sit but the place will be swarming during lunch times. Tables are quite close to each other so moving around may get hard.

Pros: Quality guarantee, Cheap

Cons: Tables are a bit too close to each other

Every students favorite

I love Katriina and used to visit the place almost every day when I studied for my high school's final exams at the university's library.

The place has an interesting and cozy decor, which makes you feel comfortable. The system is simple and quick, you get your food immediately after payment. Soup includes a side-saland that usually was sprouts, which is a huge plus, in my opinion! There were normally at least 3 different sorts of soups, all amazing (e.g. beetroot-coconut, lentil-curry, Mexican beans...). You could top your soup with peanuts and have the delicious, legendary fresh buns!

To finish the meal, have a coffee/tea or a cupful of some dessert they have to offer.

Pros: Delicious soups, Many absolutely amazing option, Fresh, self-made bread!!

Cons: Busy during lunch hours, Only open during the lunch, Awkwardly small tables

Not fully vegan, busy student canteen

I agree, it is rather a canteen than a restaurant. Busy and a bit chaotic during lunch hours, when I happened to go there too. Service is ok, not friendly though.
And in my opinion you should not call a restaurant vegan if you serve dairy product. I see it as dishonest. Non vegan items are not marked, only Finnish customer recognize them.
Going there was a bit unpleasant experience for me so I chose rather going to some omnivore but vegan friendly places after the first time.

Pros: cheap, convenient location

Cons: only casual food, no gourmet, dishonest, they are not full vegan, busy and chaotic

nice and cheap self-service veggie restaurant

a meal here can be very cheap ( compared with finland prices!): 6 euro for 3 soups, salad, tea or coffee, dessert, bread; 7 euro for the same menu but a hot veg plate instead of the soups, 9 euro for both soups and hot plae ( and with student card even cheaper ) I tried pepper, tomato and olive soups and a beet main course, as dessert there was apple soup. everything was very tasted and everything vegan except butter to spread and milk to drink. yhere is also a small children game corner.

Pros: good, cheap, good choice

Lunch canteen filled with students

Small, canteen-like lunch restaurant in the city center. Discount with a valid national student card, (I guess with ISIC also). Open only for lunch Mon-Fri. Several choices for soups and main dishes. I tried the curry-coconut soup, which was tasty, although a bit too salty. My companion ate main dish with cabbage and seitan, and he told me it tasted like something his Granny cooked (a positive remark).

Pros: moderate prices, student discount

Cons: open only for lunch, not so cozy decor
