Just Okay - Edit
If you know good Indian food you will be disappointed. There were lots of clearly marked vegan options but they were all bland and very tomato saucey. The pakora was greasy and heavy. The cauliflower was undercooked. I probably wouldn’t eat here again unless I was desperate for food or something. Lovely staff and nice authentic presentation were the best things about this restaurant.

A lifesaver - Edit
This place was a life saver. Got back from the manta night dive and all other places kitchens were closing. I called this place and they were able to get me something for pick up like ten minutes before they closed.

Not bad - Edit
Small patio with a beautiful view of the ocean. The staff was very nice and the menu has a clearly labeled vegan section. The portions were a little small for the price but it is Hawaii. It is nice that rice is included with each entree.

Must Eat Here! - Edit
We come to Kona every few years and Kamana Kitchen is always a must for us! We usually go 2-3 times per visit. Consistent, delicious vegan and vegetarian food in a fantastic location where you can view the water. Fast and friendly service. Can’t go wrong here!

It’s fine - Edit
As an Indian woman, I’m already critical but the reviews were good enough to give it a shot. I think it’s just OK. The Baingan Bharta didn’t have the traditional smoky flavor. It’s just an eggplant and tomato dish. The Aloo Gobi and Mixed Vegetables were the same dish ... just different vegetables.

Great food and water views - Edit
The food is really great here and vegan options are marked on the menu with a separate vegan section. This is the best Indian we’ve had after living in the US for 5 years.

Phenomenal Indian Food - Edit
We were so impressed with the food at Kamana Kitchen. We eat vegetarian and vegan North Indian food often, and this was bar none the best Indian food we've had. We ordered a varitey of vegan and veg dishes - the baingan bharta was delicious, flavorful and a total treat. The naan and onion kulcha is so fresh and fluffy. The Palak paneer (vegetarian, not vegan) was rich and creamy, but not overly creamy. We also enjoyed the cholle, dal, navratan korma and kofta. It was a truly memorable meal.

Amazing food - Edit
The food was absolutely amazing. There was a vegan section on the menu and labeled vegan options. We went here for my birthday and it was so good. My boyfriend says it’s the best Indian food he’s had and that he will come back to the island just for this. Edited to add the food is spicy! They don’t mess around! I got medium spicy and it was perfect, my boyfriend got medium plus and was sweating like a waterfall

Vegan - no problem - Edit
Fantastic dinner at Kamala tonight. Really appreciated the vegan section of the menu as well as the clear markings of other items that were vegan. Everything was delicious. The pakoras were a real treat, and the entrees were well spiced with our requested heat level (hot!). Highly recommend, the waves of the pacific crashing 40 feet from your table does not hurt either! Oh yes - almost forgot, the roti is the vegan bread option.

So good - Edit
I love Kamana Kitchen. They have good sized portions! One thing that I really appreciate about this restaurant is that the vegetarian and vegan dishes (which are all clearly marked) are significantly cheaper than the dishes with meat. There aren’t as many options for vegans as there are for vegetarians, but the ones they do have are amazing. I most recently had the Chana masala and it was so good! My friend and I both asked for mild spice level and they were very accommodating.

I agree that this is some of the best Indian food around. I enjoyed the mixed vegetables with lentils. The samosas were light and tasty with amazing sauces. I'd go back!

Food is good, service not so much - Edit
Everyone was happy with their order once they got it. It just took a while to get anything. We ended up grabbing most of what we needed ourselves, including napkins, a pitcher of water to refill & take-away boxes.

Not accommodating for different spice levels - Edit
We have been to kamana before, this time we came with my five year old son. Most dishes indicate they can control the level of spice, we ordered the aloo Gobi and chana masala mild. Both were too spicy for my son, we sent the chana masala back, and they brought it back out with no apparent difference. We ended up ordering the dal soup, having to wait for it to cool for my son to eat it. Apparently the ownership changed recently. I did ask them to make the aloo gobi milder, and they ignored my request. We will not be returning.

Very tasty - Edit
I ate here while on vacation with my mom and brother in Hawaii. Being the only vegan in my family ( and only 14 years old ) I always pick restaurants. Very knowledgeable waiter and new vegan section on the menu. Delicious some of the best Indian food I have ever had. Only big was they served mine with a side of non vegan bread but that's ok because my brother ate it. Would definitely recommend.

First Time to Find a Restaurant with NO VEGAN - Edit
After finding this restaurant on the app, we were dressed and ready for a great Indian meal. When we arrived at 8:00, some of the waiters were eating at a front table and seemed annoyed we wanted to have dinner. There were a few other diners. After a long wait, the waitress walked by and dropped two menus off at one end of the table and went to have a conversation with someone. When she returned, she asked "What you want" holding a pad of paper. We asked if we could have a beer and then order. She sighed and left and went to other tables, brought checks and then went to the bar and 15 minutes later we had a beer. Then she returned. We asked what vegan choices were available since it appears everything had dairy in it. She suggested two dishes but was not sure. When she returned, she informed us that even the rice contains Ghee. Their sauces are pre-made. everything is pre-made. You cannot have anything made without butter. They brought our check for the two beers and we left.
Read moreThe table next to us was a local chef and his wife. They heard us talking and gave us a few other options that are listed on Happy Cow. They also added that they have a reputation on the island of not liking vegans.
In summary, this establishment should be listed as suitable for Ovo-Lacto vegetarians. It is not suitable for Vegans nor is it vegan friendly. In fact, there was nothing friendly about the place including the staff.
Pros: On the beach
Cons: No Vegan Options, Horrible Service
