Decent meals

Decent food, great view to the jungle. Takes little bit longer but it's worth the while.

Pros: Communicative English. Adjustable menu.

Cons: Takes a while

Small resto with great local dishes

Me and my girlfriend stayed in Bukit Lawang and visited Jungle Hill Cafe almost every day. The owner's (Susiana) rendang made us come back after day 1. We were sold by the delicious food and asked if we could also take a cooking class the next day with her. We wanted to cook this at home too! NB: we eat 100% vegan so it was amazing to discover how she cooked it all.

Surprisingly, the next day we were not only introduced to the local cuisine, but also to her and her family. Her story. Her life in Bukit Lawang. She cooks with a lot of enthusiasm and really makes sure all of her guests are happy. It's a great activity because we were given the option to cook 6 dishes in total and she got us a pen and paper to take the recipes home.
Also, there was so much food after the cooking class that we decided to invite her family and eat dinner with us (see picture).

There were not many guests lately, so we decided to support her restaurant by eating here almost every day after too. She has one son that smiles infinitely and helps around in the restaurant too. You just feel welcome there! Oh and we saw an orangutan from the patio!

Reading reviews online about the food taking a long time is not represetative of how things are at Jungle Hill. Since we experienced how fresh the food is (no prepackaged herbs and such), and how long it took us to prepare it to equal her quality of cooking, we believe she won't settle for anything less than good food.
I believe they actually have added it to the menu by stating 'Our food is freshly cooked, so it might take a bit longer.' Since we haven't had food this tasteful, we weren't actually bothered.

My advice for people visiting Bukit Lawang is to try and get a meal at Jungle Hill Cafe. If it takes too long.. Just keep in mind that she is the only cook and is prepping everything from scratch. And you know.. Why not ask how long it takes? It's a great conversation starter :)

Pros: Fresh food and ingredients, Friendly owner, Riverview with possibility of orangutan spotting!

Cons: Just have patience if it takes too long😄
