Best Vegan Unagi in the Area

As I was browsing their menu from afar, there was one dish that caught my eye immediately: Japanese Style Vegan Unagi (Eel) ($12). I had to take a second glance and make sure that was correct... vegan. eel?

Damn. This vegan unagi was BOMB. It looked like unagi. It tasted like unagi. It felt like unagi. We took it home where we cooked up some brown rice and veggies to go along, and our meal was amazing. I'm not sure what type of meat substitute was used - perhaps some type of soy. But the way it was cooked up with their sauce made for an amazing dish, and a fraction of what 'real' unagi would typically cost at a restaurant.

Needless to say, I was so happy we stopped by and I look forward to returning again. I will return one day to try their desserts.

Pros: Incredible vegan unagi, Many dessert options

Tasty Taiwanese food

This place is delicious, especially if you prefer lighter cooking (less oil, less salt). Tried the vegan "eel" meal and the vegan minced "pork" rice meal. They normally come with a stewed hardboiled egg but if you ask for it vegan they give you some mushroom instead. Both entrees were delicious: clean well-balanced flavors, and quality ingredients, good execution. Try the eel if you like things on the sweeter side, otherwise you can't go wrong with the minced pork for that savory, slightly smoky deliciousness. Will definitely be coming back again!

Pros: Excellent food, Nice vibe, Next to an Asian vegetarian market!

Cons: A tad pricier than a typical meal in the area

Tasty veg food, nice atmosphere

Our lunch at Joyheart Café was very tasty. The lunch set included an entrée (I got mapo tofu with rice), a small cup of ginger-broth clear soup with enoki mushrooms and thinly sliced bok choy, a cool, fresh-tasting seaweed salad, two perfectly cooked Brussels sprouts, and some fresh fruit. My husband got the veggie pork, and noodles instead of rice. The noodles were so savory and good! I will get those next time I go, although the rice was delicious, too. All dishes that are not vegan can be made vegan by omitting the egg.

This is not one of those places with an eight-page menu. There’s just one page for lunch; one page for dinner, with what appear to be carefully selected dishes.

The atmosphere was quite pleasant. It’s very clean and airy and seems brand new. The staff were nice and friendly. The attached grocery store is great, too. I’d definitely recommend it!

Pros: Tasty vegan food, Nice array of sides (with lunch or dinner set), Nice atmosphere

This is a gem!

I went there for the first time today (it's close to my office) with a friend/colleague. It's not on Happy Cow and definitely should be. The food is great (Taiwanese) and they have an excellent organic shop in the same building that sells everything from mock meats to seaweed to fermented foods etc. A great selection.

Pros: Simple menu, Excellent food, Great, small supermarket in the same building

Cons: Hidden!
