Best vegan cookie!!

Recently moved into the main part of town opposite Maxi, this place is the best to grab a quick coffee and cookie after shopping or on the way out of town. They have a vegan cookie (soooo good!), a vegan tart (was delicious but a bit too cold) and also a cake and 2 pies that I haven't tried yet! Also the coffee is really good here too!!

get in quick

We often pass through Castlemaine on the way to visit family in Central Vic, looking for something to eat for lunch. There always seems to be a bit of a line up here but it’s still one of the quickest options for a tasty bite. We stopped in at 1pm on a Wednesday and there was only one vegan pie left. I mean, not just one variety, a single pie. It was the green curry tofu. The filling was tasty and satisfying and the pastry was great - crisp and flaky without making a mess! My husband said it was the best vegan pie he’s ever tasted but I wouldn’t go that far.

Not bad, limited options.

The green curry pie was quite tasty, the pastry was crispy and flaky. The arrow and pineapple cake was not good because of the ginger. I really don’t like ginger and it was over powering. My partner liked both, especially the pie. (She is a fan of ginger)

Pros: Ok pie. , Staff were pleasant.

Cons: Way too much ginger in the cake. , Not enough variety.

Needed more vegan food

Not bad. Pie okay. Cake okay. Pie has too much steamed tofu not enough flavour for me. Cake has a bit too much crystallized ginger for me. And I love ginger. But it's a great option to have available. They need more vegan food!

Cons: Need more options and flavour

Call into Johnny's

This is a cute little bakery at the back of the hotel. It probably used to be the drive-through bottle shop, now it is touted as the drive-through bakery (although there is not driveway service that we saw).
Vegan options are clearly listed and there are a few, including savoury options. Coffees were really good - we had both almond and soy milk (separately) in ours. The pineapple cake was amazing with hazelnuts, almonds, pineapple, and ginger - moist and delicious the best cake I have had in a long time.
We took pies home to have later and they were really good too, although expensive at $7.50 each. Crispy pastry and interesting filling.
We noted a couple of tables outside and a few dogs visiting with their owners too. I would recommend stopping by, they're really friendly.
