Good "kara-age"

Inside Parco shopping center (B1 level at the foot of the escalator). Everything I tried was good.

Delicious all-vegan menu

Echoing others’ comments below. This place is delicious. Cucumber salad and karaage particularly good. Well worth the wait in line to get in. It’s in the basement level of a big mall complex.

Lucky to have tried this vegan Izayaka food before closing

Original post on 2024-11-16

Took a few minutes to locate the restaurant which is in the basement of the PARCO shopping center (see photos attached for extra guidance).

The restaurant staff were very kind to seat me and my partner for dinner 10 minutes before closing at 9pm (despite having a sign posted outside the restaurant that indicated they were closed for the day). Very easy to order via English menu through QR code.

Small portions but super affordable! They were sold out of some items but we were lucky to try the following items:
- Fried maitake mushrooms
- Mapo tofu rice
- Karaage teriyaki with mayonnaise
All were scrumptious! Wish I could have tried even more of the menu.

Had to come back once more for my final meal in Japan before my flight. It was another excellent dinner. Was lucky I could be seated right away with their last available table as a walk-in. Re-ordered the Karaage Teriyaki with mayonnaise. Tried two new items: gyoza dumplings (12pc) and single scoop of mango ice cream. The dumplings were just okay but the 12 pc portion size seems substantial. The mango ice cream was very good!

Vegan izakaya in Tokyo

Izakaya is a type of Japanese bar serving alcohol and snacks. While most of the izakaya would serve meat, Izakaya Masaka is fully vegan. If you are a Buddhist, they also serve food that is allium-free. The opening hours may vary so better check their IG Account before going.

Pros: Fried chicken

Great variety!

In the basement of the PARCO mall, this is a great vegan spot.

A great selection of food including karaage, gyozas and more.

We enjoyed all the dishes we tried, particularly the deep fried mushrooms.

Must try although karaage and gyoza were not my favourites. The fried mushroom was amazing!

Lovely izakaya experience in a surprising location

Masaka is located inside Shibuya Parco which is not the place you would expect an izakaya to be. It's on the B1F basement floor and partially obscured by the Kiku restaurant. If you're coming in from the east entrance, head down the escalator, take a right, then the first left and go straight. I had the Karaage with the yellow tartar sauce. Unfortunately they ran out of gyoza and couldn't try those. The karaage itself was great. It had a great crunch but I didn't expect the inside to have a sizable amount of liquid. Oil maybe? Honestly, I wasn't a fan of the tartar sauce. It reminded me too much of eggs. This is one of those times where the substitute is just too good of a copy. Ordering is done through a QR code menu system and it's very easy. There is English speaking staff if you need help. All in all though, it's a great place and a must for vegans visiting Tokyo.

Be sure to arrive there early. Last order can vary depending on how busy it is. You might get there an hour and a half before closing but you'll still be out of luck. I was turned away the first time for arriving too late.

Pros: Izakaya experience for vegans, Lots of food on the menu

Cons: Arrive early

Delicious

We were so glad to discover this restaurant in the same mall as the Pokémon Center. Their dishes are incredibly delicious and have a great flavour balance

best food i’ve had in japan so far

i really enjoyed my meal here. be warned that it gets extremely busy around dinner time - i believe i was the last person to get accepted for dinner and i got there around 7 on a monday. they also had sold out of their very famous karaage and gyozas before i was seated and able to order. there’s plenty of other delicious stuff on the menu to choose from, though. i got the tempura green beans, rice set (comes with miso soup and pickled veg), chinese style tofu, and the cucumber with spring onion and ginger. it was plenty of food. the tofu was incredibly flavorful and satisfying, but everything else was top tier, too.

Crazy Excellent

If I could give this more than 5 stars for the karaage alone I would, definitely in the top three meals I had in all of Japan

Just completely hits the spot, easy to order, small but diverse menu, hot fresh and fast service, and to top it all off - everything is insanely delicious. We went for a late lunch and got a table easily, though when I tried to go previously at night they were at capacity and I didn’t get a table, so plan your trip wisely.

The karaage here was the best we had anywhere, my favourite was the teriyaki mayo but the tartare sauce was also really really good, very realistically ‘eggy’ which I didn’t expect! The plates are fairly small so you can try a couple different options, we had the fried mushrooms, terimayo karaage, tartare karaage, mapo tofu and onion cucumber. The cucumber was a nice fresh thing to have in between fried options, the mapo tofu was a bit bland and I would recommend to stick to the more classic Japanese dishes

Mouth-wateringly delicious

Adequate

Place is cramped, crowded and plain. Had to line up to get in, but that cleared up around 7pm.

(The world’s most annoying shouty Americans were camping a table and deafening everyone but I won’t hold that against the restaurant.)

Food is okay. Nothing special, but it’s a neat experience that you can keep ordering more and more food and drink through their webpage and it’ll keep turning up at your table.

Cocktails are lousy and watery but the beer is great. Staff are fine.

Delicious vegan izakaya

Everything was delicious here. It’s located on the b1 floor of the large shopping center. If you see signs for the Pokémon store you’re in the right area.

Karaage was super good, and even the non alcoholic beer, which I wouldn’t usually go for, was surprisingly tasty.

Would recommend.

Pros: Flavors, Coziness

Karaage was nice but other veggies were a little bland

We ordered multiple little plates to share, all of which were nice but sometimes were a little bland, even with the salt to dip in. Nice enough of a little forgettable

It was worth it!

We were there an hour before closing time and luckily we were still able to get in! The 30-minute wait was worth it, because we had super delicious vegan food in a cozy atmosphere.

Delicious, highly recommended

Had the Karaage Shichuan Spicy, Macaroni Salad, and deep fried maitake mushrooms. All were delicious with great crunchy texture. The spice of the karaage was not too aggressive but full with flavor. The Macaroni Salad contrasted nicely with the crunch of the other two. You order on your smartphone after scanning a QR code, and the menu was easy to navigate. Definitely recommending this place!

Amazing karaage, other dishes okay

It‘s a very small place located on B1F of a mall. The karaage is pretty amazing, the other dishes were good too, though the Chinese style tofu I wouldn’t recommend.

Incredible Karaage

This place was the perfect little stop at the end of our day. Very casual and amazing food. I'm so happy that I could have karaage as a vegan, and it was so so so yummy! The fried maitake mushrooms were also amazing! Conveniently located on the basement level of Shibuya Parco.

Pros: Casual setting, Convenient location, Incredble food
