We liked it! - Edit
Ignored the critical reviews and was pleasantly surprised. We’re vegetarian so got the classic w tofu instead of beef. Very flavorful and satisfying!

If there is nothing else … - Edit
Always happy to see vegan options.
Read moreThey have a vegan wet burrito, chimichanga & taco with tofu and there is a cilantro lime Or ranchero sauce.
It comes with refried beans and rice.
Was it good ? Not really.
Very bland in general, but I would say the ranchero sauce tho was the best part. Two burritos & two canned green teas was almost $60
Actually eating there- there are 3 picnic tables out front ( no umbrellas) 4 smaller tables up by where you order in the shade.
( fyi - across the street is a Thai/smoothie place with two vegan options for Thai)
Cons: Taste , Seating , Cost

Used to be so good! Now so-so - Edit
This used to be our favorite place on Kauai, back when they had deep fried tofu. On our last visit, it was not deep fried, and the tortilla was not as good as it used to be. Bummer! Our favorite sauce option is the cilantro lime ... even though one of us doesn't like cilantro, it's still very good!

Loved! - Edit
We loved this place! The family running it was very sweet and they knew exactly how to make good vegan options. We had the cilantro lime tofu burrito and Cajun tofu tacos on corn tortillas. Both were fantastic. The line got long very quickly but we still got our food in a reasonable amount of time and it was 100% worth it.

Quick, tasty, Island style tacos - Edit
Not authentic mexi food, quite the opposite actually, but that's okay. Think of the food here as having its own flavor pallet, with a heavy island influence. I ordered the tofu taco with cilantro lime sauce on their homemade flour tortilla. It was quite good, and messy. Garlicky tofu cubes with slaw on a grilled wheat tortilla.

Cons: Not really a taco, more like a grilled wrap

Delicious! - Edit
We got the tofu burritos with cilantro lime sauce Came with rice and beans, which were very flavorful - not just ordinary rice. The lady working there is on top of it, and has a Vegan button at the ready. They know how to serve vegan food well!

Super vegan options in Waimea - Edit
This place is so popular and busy, yet the service is so friendly and respectful of vegan needs. It was so easy to order vegan- just say the word- and even with a long line behind us, questions were answered with patience and respect. I ordered the taco salad with tofu and cilantro lime sauce, it was a good choice and took forever to eat because it was so ample. After trying a couple places in the area, this was the best vegan food, and the preferred stop for the non-vegan companion.

Tofu burrito with cilantro lime sauce- add avocado! The hidden gem was the dirty rice and refried beans. Awesome flavors!!!! Good portion size! (My carnivore enjoyed his pork and mahi mahi.)

Amazing, try the cilantro lime sauce - Edit
This place was great. The employees are incredibly friendly & bubbly. They know what vegan is and were able to assure us of the vegan-ness of our order. They also make their tortillas from scratch in house.
Read moreNot a tremendous amount of options, but what they have hits the spot.. basically tofu burrito or tofu taco. You can also get the burrito fried chimichanga style, which was great! Comes with rice and beans (both vegan.. beans have a smoky flavor and rice has cumin and other spices). We got homemade chips and salsa, too. All the flavors were excellent. I'm very glad we stopped by.
Pros: Amazing unique flavors

Amazing burritos - Edit
The tofu burrito was really good. The lady working there asked if I wanted it to be vegan or vegetarian. The rice and beans are also really good. Very filling meal for the price. The food came out very fast as well.

Great food but what's with all the disposables? - Edit
The tofu burrito was delicious. My partner also liked his mahi mahi burrito. Food alone was 4/4, but I have to take one star off for the indiscriminate use of disposable plates and flatware.

Great tacos! - Edit
I got the cilantro lime tofu tacos with the corn tortillas and loved it. Definitely the perfect amount of food for me but if you want more the burritos would probably be a better option.

Amazing tacos!! - Edit
Corn tacos can be made vegan by omitting cheese and sour cream. So delicious! Great location for after hiking Waimea Canyon and Kokee, or a stop on the way to the secluded beach at Polihale.

Meh - Edit
Had the tofu tacos and the taco salad. Tacos were ok, but the salad didn’t have many of the vegetables that were advertised as part of the ingredient list - more like a tired iceberg salad from a 1950’s diner. Would have given two stars except that everything was disposable- plates, cutlery, water bottles ( no free water. Try the Thai place across the road instead.

Tasty and filling - Edit
I had a tofu burrito and it came with a whole platter with refried beans and rice. Good flavour, huge portions. For dessert there were fried cinnamon sugar sticks, which contain no animal products.

Gf vegan is easy at a place like this! I got the tofu burrito without the shell, rice and beans. My Omni partner was jealous. All taste, no filler.

tasty but doesn't even know what vegetarian means! - Edit
Our hotel was near the Poipu location so we went to that one... I asked if their rice and beans had any animal products in it and the cashier said no, they don't have any lard in them. Then she handed me their paper menu that said "vegetarian/vegan menu". She said "you can have anything in here." I opened it up and look through it and was confused. It was their entire regular menu but didn't have beef in it. I can't remember what she said but then I said something like "well you know that fish and chickens and pigs are still animals so this isn't vegetarian" and she kind of shrugged like "okay if you say so"...I am pretty sure that when I ordered I mentioned we were vegan, but when the order came there was sour cream as a side (in a plastic ramekin so easily removed). Anyway, it was good but the "vegetarian/vegan" menu thing just really shocked me. I appreciate that they did have a tofu option though. (There's also a Puka Dog stand like 30 ft away with veggie hot dogs and a gelato place with a whole ton of non-dairy options next door.)

Tofu tacos - Edit
Good lunch stop, with a few vegan options. Nice to have vegan tacos that actually have tofu/protein on them! Big portions, even just the single taco, and filling. Not the most flavour (I got the cilantro lime), but still good. Comes with a side of chips and really good salsa! They also have a location in Poipu.

Yuck - Edit
My husband and I went to Island Taco because of the reviews here on Happy Cow. What a waste of money. They offer two varieties of vegan tacos; the difference is only the seasoning on the tofu. I tried cilantro lime, which is apparently their most popular flavor. The flavor itself was fine, but the overall taco was pretty awful...deep-fried tofu made the whole thing way too greasy. And cabbage instead of lettuce is just...odd. My husband, who eats fish, ordered the ahi taco, and was asked if he wanted that vegan. Huh? He didn't like his tacos, either, and neither of us finished lunch. Do yourself a favor and skip this place...go across the street to Coconut Corner and get some fruit instead.

Best tofu tacos EVER! - Edit
Wow - this place was so good, we made the drive from the north shore an extra time just to have their tacos! We LOVED the cilantro lime tofu tacos so much, we may plan our next trip to Kauai completely around dining at Island Taco. We've dined at many, many restaurants throughout Kauai in the last couple years and these guys are hands-down the best. I also lived in Phoenix for years so have had a lot of great tacos and honestly, these beat everything I've tasted elsewhere. So fresh, flavors are just right, prices VERY reasonable (especially for the great portions) and the service so friendly.
Read moreYou can use Waimea Canyon as an excuse to go here, but no matter what, you have to make this a part of your Kauai trip!!
The rating system on Happy Cow will only let me give 4 cows since they also serve fish, but secretly, we give them SIX cows!
