Vegan dinner in Rome - Edit
We went here for dinner on our last night in Rome, it is slightly pricy but we were aware of this going in. The service was good, we got a complimentary amuse bouché of gazpacho which was very nice, vegan as well. We had pasta for starter and seitan and tempura veg for main. The seitan was nice if a little rich, and the tempura was very good. For dessert we shared the peach and sage sorbet which was very delicious. Service was very good and it was a nice atmosphere, would recommend if looking for somewhere a bit fancier for dinner!

Ok - Edit
We came here for a late lunch/early dinner and after some deliberation (as nothing really appealed to me) ordered the Taste of the Sea (spaghettone in spicy Naga pepper sauce, with tomatoes preserved in sea water), vegetable tempura with vegan ricotta stuffed zucchini flower, and cremolato with coffee and whipped cream. Neither of us was very hungry so this was more than enough food for us.
Read moreThey also had a bread basket which had really nice focaccia squares, and breadsticks in it, and gave us an amuse bouche of savoury whipped cream and fried zucchini slices. This had a subtle flavour and was nice to spread on the focaccia.
The spaghettone in spicy Naga pepper sauce, with tomatoes preserved in sea water, was very nice and light, not spicy at all. Instead there was a lovely dill taste.
The vegetable tempura was, as expected, very lightly battered, with a mint and dill dip, which was nice and refreshing. There was a single zucchini flower stuffed with vegan ricotta, and it wasn't good. It wasn't crispy, the ricotta was more like a cream, and very (too) rich.
The coffee cremolato was delicious, refreshing and a lovely creamy coffee flavour. The cream however, omg, was it absolutely disgusting and ruined the coffee cremolato. It had a VERY thick oily mouthfeel, that left a film in your mouth. Luckily it was at the bottom of the glass, so we scooped out as much of the coffee cremolato we could and left the rest.
As others have said, the service was a little slow at times, but they were perfectly nice.
Pros: coffee cremolate was v.good (minus whipped cream)
Cons: very oily whipped cream in the cremolato

Let down by poor service - Edit
Il Margutta is a centrally situated, elegant, comfortable, spacious restaurant. We went the two of us for dinner, early by Rome standards, at 7:30 PM. It should have been a great dinner.
Read moreOn the positive side, all the dishes we ordered were delicious and well presented.
On the negative side, service is poor. We were seated for some time and, although there were few other tables occupied and plenty of staff in the restaurant, it was a while before any of them thought to give us a menu. We also had to wait too long before being served and also between courses. Getting attention to ask for the bill was a challenge. There was no good reason for any of this. It just felt inefficient with poorly trained waiting staff. There was a young couple on the table near us, right in the corner of the restaurant. We couldn't help but notice that when their first course was taken the young man lost his knife with it so when their second was served he asked the waiter for a new one. The waiter acknowledged his request but never came back leaving the hapless young man unable to eat, his meal getting cold whilst his companion finished hers. Eventually he got up and stopped the waiter who gave him one to bring back to his table himself. Hopeless.
Unfortunately, I do have to add that our food was lukewarm at best. This is no doubt a function of the poor service.`I imagine it was prepared by the kitchen but then not collected and served immediately.
Having said that our food was delicious, it is important to note that the portions are meagre. If you don't want to have to go out for dinner after having dinner at Il Margutta then one really needs three courses at least if one has an appetite from sightseeing all day. Don't plan on less. It just does not hit the sides. This means that the meal will be expensive. Be prepared.
All in all, this restaurant could be so much better and this is down to the crummy service. Were it not for some good cooking, which despite the portions and being delivered lukewarm we were still able to appreciate, it would be less than the three stars awarded here.

Vegan lunch menu - Edit
The place itself is spacious, decorated with plants and has a bit of a luxurious vibe. I had the vegan lunch menu, with bread, a zucchini soup, seitan sticks and a pineapple ice-cream dessert. The soup wasn't my thing, it had an oddly sparkling taste. The Seitan sticks didn't really look tasty but actually were. The dessert looked a bit different than on the menu and was okay. Overall I found the price okay, but the separate dishes were quite pricy, so it's good they offer a lunch menu.

Nothing special, the food either. Sad to not see many Italian dishes on the menu. The decor was tacky and the brownie must say horrible.

Wonderful Elegant Experience - Edit
This is a beautiful, elegant dining experience with very delicious vegetarian and vegan options. Between the two of us, we had the risotto, breaded seitan, salads and the vegan cheese platter. There was a tasting menu available as well which was tempting. Many menu items are available as either vegetarian or vegan and are clearly marked. Despite being vegan, we were given a complementary appetizer (croissants and butter) and were told that the butter contained dairy, which I found odd, but otherwise, this was an incredible experience.

The very best! - Edit
What a fabulous restaurant! Really lovely place in delightful back street, but only a short walk from Spanish Steps. Super-helpful & smart staff who all spoke perfect English. Relaxed atmosphere, but very professional staff approach. Full vegan meal menu. We had the set one to make life easy - five courses that were all absolutely delicious. I was told in UK I’d struggle to eat vegan in Rome. Well how wrong they were! Not just vegan but top flight vegan. Not cheap but this is the very best in every single way.

Beautiful restaurant, good food - Edit
Me and my friends had dinner here. I liked the interior and creative menu and our server was really nice too. We received a bread basket we didnt order so i thought it was free but in the end we had to pay for it 😄 Not a big deal but I found it a little unusual. The bread was great but I wish they had brought some vegan butter or olive oil with it. The food was good but couldve had more flavor honestly. However, it was a really good experience still and I'd come here again!

Rude and overrated - Edit
Service was VERY rude to me and my friend. It seemed like they didn't like us at all because we were a) tourists not speaking fluent Italian and b) just ordering the cheese board (which wasn't even that good and very overpriced tbh). The staff didn't show us the minimum of hospitality even though we were the only ones in the restaurant (as we were there pretty early in their opening hours). So I cannot recommend this place at all. Rather go to Buddy Veggy (or Buddy Vegan as it is now called), they also do a vegan cheese board and the staff there is SO nice!

Good food but bad experience - Edit
The pictures from other happy cow users make it seem like there is a buffet. This is not the case anymore. You can only order a la carte.
Read moreWe received a summer menu but on the website there was another menu. When we wanted to order a fig pasta, they told us the figs were not in season.. even though it was on the (seasonal) summer menu. So we could not order it. She presented us with an alternative that was not on the menu. Afterwards we saw on the receipt that this alternative was 5 euros more expensive..
Besides this, they charged us for the bread that they gave us without asking for..
The food was good, but nothing special.
I would not come back here.

The first vegetarian restaurant I visited in Rome - Edit
Il Margutta is the first restaurant my husband and I visited in the 90 ties when I was lacto ovo vegetarian. The food is still so delicious now when we are both vegan and we visit Il Margutta when we are in Rome.

Classy but good - Edit
This is a classy restaurant whose prices are not too high, and whose quality is undeniable. The menu offers many interesting options of naturally vegetarian (or vegan - I'd say 90% is either vegan or can be made vegan) dishes, and you can easily eat a light meal or have something heavier if you need it.

Best vegan dinner ever! - Edit
At the end of our Italy vacation we visited this vegetarian/vegan restaurant highlight. We were quite underdressed, because we were on a hiking vacation. However the staff treated us well anyway. Everything was excellent in this restaurant. They have entire multi-course menus. It's clearly marked, which food is vegan or "can be made vegan". I would say 3/4 of their menu is vegan/can-be-made-vegan. They also have several vegan wine options. I would recommend it and go here again. Obviously it's expensive, however the price is matched by excellent quality and marvelous food. We were blown away by the seitan skewers. I've never tasted such delicious seitan.

Sadly our worst food in one week rom (dinner) - Edit
We were looking forward to nice food in this restaurant but it already disappointed with the starter. The salad was rotten (like really rotten), the avocado was totally unripe, hard as a rock. The sauce for the pasta was the same like the (cold) soup. The homemade bread for 4 eur(!!) was one half very nice, the other half was already dry. Our worst food in one week rome… and the most expensive with 60 eur (no wine, only water).

The lunch buffet here is really impressive - lots of choice with many different salads, hot dishes and soup, but the best thing is the care they put into making every single thing delicious. Each dish was beautifully flavored and different to the others - nothing seemed mass produced.
