Buddhist inspired restaurant. They have an amazing selection of different traditional Chinese dishes. I can see why this has been ranked as no.1

Don’t miss out on this - Edit
Food is delicious and delicate. Portions were on the smaller side, but still filling. I got the orange chicken and it was great, though I’m sure that regardless of what you get, you’ll be pleased and satisfied. It is definitely a restaurant that leaves you wanting for more!

Best food of the trip - Edit
Really highly recommended for vegans to try a comprehensive menu of Chinese flavours and food. You must go here!
Read moreThe Szechuan chicken was so good and not oily and not too spicy at all.
You order from your phone.
Didn’t like the hot and sour soup, might be an acquired taste.

Great authentic local food!! - Edit
If you want an unpretentious place serving Chinese food to locals, this is the place! One of the tastiest places in Shanghai for vegan food. The dumplings with peanut sauce are amazing! They politely discouraged me from following my instinct to over-order. The food was the right portion and less than 100 RMB.
Read moreUpdate: have returned several times to this place over the last year. Each time I’ve noticed changes to the decor and branding. The delicious food is still the same, with a few welcome menu additions! I’d no longer say this place feels like it’s “just for locals”. They tend to have more people seated now, and maybe with the good publicity on HappyCow they’re leaning into catering to travelers. But it’s still amazing vegan food served in a traditional setting.

Myfavourite place in Shanghai - Edit
I spent 4 days in Shanghai and ate here three times with my boyfriend!! The food is super good and the service is great (although it can get busy at times) we tried so many dishes and highly recommend the walnut bao (so so good as a desert) wontons, orange chicken or ribs, the fried rice and the salt n pepper tofu (near the front of the menu called a different name)!
Read moreIt was amazing being able to pick anything because it's all vegan! The restaurant it's upstairs you can see the window from the street with the happy cow logo! Go up in the lift and there's a sign saying Lotus Vegan😄
Payment - our wechat didn't work but they accepted cash instead (but have some change atleast). AliPay might work!

If you're a foreigner you need cash to pay, the app doesn't take foreign cards. Make sure to try the fish and pickle hotpot. All food was amazing, staff was friendly and helpful.

Nice Little Near the Bund - Edit
Decent sized menu with a good range of food and friendly staff. No use of onion or garlic for anyone with a Satvik diet. You have to go into the building and take the lift up to the 2nd floor. We paid with cash as our Alipay didn't work.

All vegan, difficult to find - Edit
Detailed menu with pictures. Ordering directly through the Alipay app, the food was brought very quickly. Not super delicious, but we were very happy to find something vegan.
Read moreThe place was difficult to find. The restaurant is located in a larger building where you don't see any shops on the ground floor, only a security guard. Take the elevator to the second floor, and that's where the restaurant is.
The second time here was definitely a better food choice by us, but ordered too much. The cucumber juice this time was much thinner and not as tasty.

Amazing food - Edit
We tried to follow the directions but found it difficult to get there. It’s best to take exit 5 from the subway station, cross the road, take the first left and it’s in that building. Second floor. There is a clear sign from the outside that says Happy Cow too.
Read moreThe food was amazing and staff very friendly. You can only use WeChat or AliPay, and it was easy to communicate with the staff via translate apps. We ordered the Dim Sum, a noodle broth and assorted noodles. It was plenty of food for 2 people.

Food ok, service same - Edit
The food is ordered via WeChat or AliPay and it comes out immediately. Great if you are in a hurry, not so great if you want fresh food. The orange chicken was warm and a sticky sauce that would have been better if it had been hotter temperature. It was gummy, instead. The green beans were also just warmed and a bit old feeling. Good taste but not fresh. The noodle dish was the best but even there the noodles felt aged. Busy clientele. Good turnover, air conditioning was a relief. I would give another chance but was disappointed in this visit. Service was fine. Nothing good or bad.

Incredible vegan food! 💖 - Edit
Lotus Vegan is absolutely incredible. We came here three times during our short trip to Shanghai and tried so many things on the menu - they were all exceptional.
Read moreWe were lucky enough to be staying just down the road, and having Lotus Vegan on our doorstep was so fortunate. A few times we tried other vegetarian and vegan restaurants and they were either closed or not there at all - every time we headed over to Lotus Vegan instead and they saved us every time 💖
The restaurant is spacious and comfortable, serving authentic vegan Chinese food, including some Shanghai specialties. The service is very friendly. Even though they don’t really speak English, it is easy enough to order through the QR code which takes you to an Alipay mini-app with translations available. By our third visit, it felt like coming home.
Now we are leaving Shanghai, we are really going to miss Lotus Vegan! 🌱
Pros: Incredible food, Good value for money , Friendly service
