Full Vegan menu - Edit
Their vegan options are abundant, and each dish is packed with vibrant, fresh ingredients that highlight the best of Mexican cuisine. The burritos are generously portioned and filled with hearty goodness, perfect after a beach day. The cozy, laid-back atmosphere adds to the charm, making Hugo’s Cocina a must-visit for anyone craving tasty, plant-based Mexican fare. It's a vegan haven by the ocean!

Huge variety of vegan options - Edit
It’s so silly that places can’t receive 5 starts unless they are fully vegan. Hugo’s has a fully vegan menu with every vegan substitution available. The California burrito is great and the tortas are very large.

Very large selection - Edit
A whole page of the menu dedicated to vegan/vegetarian options. They have vegan horchata; not listed on the menu but it's available. The vegan fish tacos were excellent. The birra taco was okay but the shiitake tacos was bland and rubbery. Very friendly staff and the food came out quickly

Lots of Veg Options - Edit
Hugo’s is your typical heavily Americanized Mexican food. To me, it’s nostalgic, but it’s also on the side of bland and ultimately nothing amazing. The menu is huge (per usual for these kinds of restaurants), but their unique feature is the abundance of vegan options. We ordered carne asada nachos, a trio of veggie enchiladas, a bean and cheese burrito (I added nopalas), and a strawberry margarita. The food itself was good, but nothing extraordinary, and in general, it was missing some flavor. The rice, surprisingly, was the best part of the night and had a bit more flavor than anything else. The produce was fresh. The strawberry margarita was yummy.
Read moreThe staff was very friendly, accommodating, and understanding of veganism. I personally would not go out of my way to eat here, especially considering the better vegan options in the area, but if you’re in the area, craving this kind of food, or need an accommodating place for nonveg people, this is your spot.

Hugo’s was delicious. We ordered the nachos, “fish” tacos, and potato fajitas. Everything was delicious and the servings were large. Leftovers for days!

Very good, homemade - Edit
I the food is delicious! Very authentic Mexican cuisine in the vegan version. I had sweet potato burrito (it came with the whole west fresh tortilla), tofu enchilada ( it had a tomato sauce made with the fresh tomatoes) and veggie tamale (so good!). Cons - they serve animal products as well and their to go containers are plastic.

Whenever we are traveling to San Diego, Hugo’s is the center point for us. Breakfast burritos let you explore the city or the beach for many hours.

Got the combo plate with the soy chorizo tacos, Spanish rice and refried beans. The food was flavorful and delicious! So many clearly labeled vegan options on the menu too and service was quick. Free chips and salsa too!

It’s good- but could be better - Edit
Large vegan selection, while the food was good it was lacking a bit. The carne was tasty but overall I felt the California burrito as a whole was a bit bland. The chips were meh, and the salsa tasted like their was tequila in it. My 4yo really enjoyed her carne taco.

OK Mexican Food in Ocean Beach - Edit
As other reviewers have noted, there are LOTS of vegan options at Hugo's and the portions are huge. Sadly, that does not make for a great meal and nowhere is that more evident than Hugo's Cocina.
Read moreWhen it comes to the food itself, it's just OK. Most items were fairly bland. The vegan enchilada trio came with 1 each of tofu, avocado and bean enchiladas and plenty of refried beans and rice. The enchiladas were all under seasoned as was an order of potato taquitos.
With so many Mexican restaurants in San Diego, there's no reason to return to Hugo's the next time I'm in town.

After eating the saddest little California burrito yesterday at Evolution, I decided to double down and try Hugo's version and WOW was it night and day. A full size burrito packed with fries, delicious faux carne asada and guac. YES

Not great - Edit
Lots of vegan options, but I wasn't happy with the food. The mushrooms in my taco were so rubbery I couldn't chew them, the burrito was bland, and everything was large portions so we wasted a lot of food. Unfortunately I don't recommend this restaurant.

This place blew my mind. Almost everything on the menu had an option to veganize it. The food is authentic and absolutely amazing. I had the “chicken mole” and loved it.
