Café Drake-HVV meal pickup service delicious, with a few confusing initial hitches - Edit
I recently tried the Café Drake/Hudson Valley Vegans prepared meal pick-up service. I greatly enjoyed what I ordered: A set of appetizers and an Ethiopian three-dish main course. The menu announcements go out to any member who expresses interest. HVV head Roberta tries to purge the list of people who do not order. After years on the list, I got a heads-up of a great menu, including the Ethiopian items, a cuisine I enjoy. Also, of course, Robbie sternly warned against being on the list if people weren’t serious. Only 3 people are now on the Café Drake list! Plus, no up-to-date website exists for Café Drake or the meal service. (Fast ways of making a business site might include Wordpress (some skill needed), or the hosting service Bluehost, which hosts many independent bloggers but also other kinds of customers.)
Read moreFor me, the time was right, as a slowing illness I got this year is greatly reducing my ability to cook and wash dishes quickly and without pain. Also, the options looked tremendous as Robbie pointed out. In fact, they had been offered before, but I have had to delete my weekly menu announcement without reading it most weeks. Drake is a wonderful cook, whom I know from an HVV event that Café Drake catered. I have talked with him as a fellow member at more than one non-Drake HVV event over the years. He is a true, active local vegan.
My first experience with the service worked beautifully, given a weather-related cell-phone problem that I had and unusual HVV business Robbie had way down-county. My entrée platter and my appetizers for two were $12 each. The chilled dishes came in reusable containers. I could have used a reminder to bring a cloth bag. Most items require microwave or stovetop reheating. Café Drake does not accept credit or debit cards.
So far, I have eaten my appetizers and the Yellow Pea main dish. Like Indian food, Ethiopian dishes are often keyed by spicy legume main dishes. (The star of the meal!) Everything so far living up to its first look.
Bravo, but with a few confusing kinks for me at first! Pickup locations in Rhinebeck and Saugerties!
*My second experience with the home meal pick-up service came on a Friday evening. They did a marvelous job with Venezuelan Arepas, Green Bean Escabeche and Tofu Salad, and a mildly spicy Garbanzo Bean filling for the deliciously dense cornmeal Arepas. The arepas and beans were easily reheated to steaming in a microwave.

Pros: Only vegan, serious, interesting cuisine without going out, notably high quality of dishes
Cons: lack of a convenient way to keep up with menus, pick-up process a bit confusing on first try
