Unhelpful Manager - Edit
I left this store in a crisis & feeling quite humiliated; I can just about walk after an RTA 20 years ago which left me paralysed below the waist for a time, I have a cage where T12 used to be, 2 replacement man-made discs and enough metalwork in my back to build a Mechano kit. My spinal condition causes constant pain & affects all my body functions meaning I have to self catheterise and more, especially after a botched Urology Op last year. It can be pretty overwhelming. I put a brave face on it and try to manage my conditions as best I can with natural supplements (instead of strong meds) therefore am a regular customer in Coney Street Holland & Barrett in York (for over 4 years now) and know and recognise many of the staff who I get on with well. We have a bit of a chat and a laugh when I go in and I have to say they have always been helpful and friendly. Then, on Wednesday 17th near closing time I was caught out badly. Having had a bad accident down below, it was everywhere and even had it on my hand (and I had nothing to wipe it on). I'm pretty good at managing normally, but yesterday got the better of me (and in that worsening condition it was a long way to the nearest café, bit of a nightmare). As I had been allowed to use the loo there by a member of staff there in the past I swallowed my pride & asked her again, she was aware of my condition, I could see she wanted to help me, but she had to go and ask her manager. A minute later a dour faced man walked up to me to ask if he could 'help me'. It really is quite humiliating to be in a position like that having to beg to use the toilet, but after telling him I was disabled I explained I'd had an 'accident' and badly needed the loo. His impassive response was that he wasn't able to allow me to use the toilet, as on two separate occasions when customer's had been allowed to use them the police had needed to be called. So not only was I standing there in this humiliating predicament, which he must have been able to smell, he also managed to make me feel like a criminal as he turned me away. So much for my being a good customer, or being friendly with staff, or the service provided. Not impressed. Sorry.

good vegan selection - Edit
Improved larger premises. I'm always disappointed when H&B stores don't have a fridge/ freezer selection of fake meats and dairy free products etc, this store has an ample selection. It's modern and bright and is always worth visiting when they are doing their buy one get one half price promotions.

Reliable and Central - Edit
A very healthily stocked branch of the UK's high street flagship healthfood store that we have visited many times over the years. Located on an extremely busy pedestrianised thoroughfare it's always worth popping in before getting the train home. If you're fortunate there may be some good reductions on items approaching their best before dates. I always like to sniff out a bargain. Today, I was impressed with the new vegan pie range from Frys but having already stocked up at Holland and Barrett in Hull there was no more room for any new purchases. Other than Tullivers, with the nearest independent healthfood store being a little out of the city centre, Holland & Barrett is pretty much the only viable option for a vegan food shopping experience in York.

More than a standard store - Edit
I would always recommend visiting the York branch of Holland Barrett as there always seems to be some good deals or samples available when we go such as the olive bar and ginger wine bar. As with all outlets it includes a variety of nutritional and tasty options such as naked bars, almond butter, blackberry jam, seeds, pasties and a very good deli section where you can purchase pies, chicken pieces, roasts and vegan cheeses. As with all outlets there are quite often manager specials and penny sales in store where you can get some good deals. This is only on selected items though. We purchased a few packets of hummus crisps in the penny sale and also got a reduced beetroot drink (49p) and soya yogurt (£1).
