This place is...chestnuts

No, seriously, that’s what you get here. Freshly roasted chestnuts, either Kyoto-style or Tianjin-style. This is a Japanese street food delicacy usually reserved for the cooler fall months, but thankfully available year round at Hisaya.

Bags come in three sizes, you can mix and match, and more of than not they’re roasted to order which means you’ll have to wait a few minutes. Kyoto chestnuts are smaller, nuttier, and drier — if you’ve had roasted chestnuts from a street vendor on the East Coast or in Europe, these are very similar.

Tianjin chestnuts are much larger and sweeter and have the consistency of a firm baked potato. I can’t say I have a favorite; they’re both good so I always order a mixed bag.

There’s other items on the menu like drinks and cookies but I haven’t been able to get a straight answer from them as to the ingredients (plus 99% of Japanese confections have dairy anyway) so I’ve just pretended they don’t exist. You want to come here for the roasted chestnuts anyway.
