Delicious vegan ramen. - Edit
Delicious vegan ramen. Tasted like a miso base. Really quick and friendly service. Just one option but no need for more when the ramen is this tasty. Authentic ramen restaurant close to some popular tourist spots. Would go again.

Old Japan - Edit
If you want a taste of true old school Japanese ramen, eat here! Super yummy, good portion, simple, to the point, Good price, Japanese ramen with no pretentiousness. Even the space is very traditional ramen shop with counter seating only in a cozy shop. We had a detailed chat with them about adding vegan gyoza to the menu, including a few of our recipes. They don’t have a vegan set option yet but hopefully some day...

Delicious Ramen in Higashiyama-ku - Edit
Just 10 minutes walk from Hokan Ji temple is this great little ramen restaurant. It has a counter that you sit at, where you can order your ramen. There is one vegan / vegetarian choice of ramen, which was a rich peanut style broth with noodles, bean sprouts and other vegetables. For three ramen, we paid 2350 yen, so great value.

Great vegan ramen! - Edit
There is only one vegan ramen option available but it is delicious! Had peanut and sesame flavors in the broth and lots of vegetables and noodles within. The menu on the counter has it listed on the back with medium and large sizes available. I just asked the owner for vegan ramen and he pointed me to it. Smoking is allowed in the restaurant.

Maybe not vegan - Edit
I really liked the broth and veggies but I think the noodles are egg noodles. I can usually tell the difference between egg noodles and ones which are vegan, and I’m about 90% sure they were eggy.
Read moreI still tried to finish it but the flavor of the noodles just put me off.
Recommended for vegetarians but maybe not vegans!
Can’t be 100% sure but just want to give people a heads up!
Pros: The broth was very flavorful and rich , Lots of veggies, Cheap (850 yen for Medium)

Really vegan? - Edit
We went to this place after visiting the nearby temple. The place is an old style mom and pop ramen shop. Just a few seats.
Read moreThere is only one vegan option which was okay, very creamy and mushroom based. I enjoyed it but it was very rich and couldn't finish it.
I did wonder about the noodles though which looked exactly the same as the ones in my meat eating friends ramen. Ramen noodle are usually made with egg but I know there are also egg free ramen out there. I would have asked but the cook didn't speak english and my japanese is too limited.
Pros: Close to Gion

Not great - Edit
I personally really didn't enjoy the vegan ramen, the broth was super rich and not that nice. Also more expensive than the regular ramen which is weird considering it doesn't have pork belly or egg so I'm not sure why it would be so high priced.

This place was a find! After a morning of temples and local sightseeing we were 4 hungry vegans, and this place delivered. Don’t worry that there is only one vegan option - it’s amazing, and everyone will want it anyhow😄

Authentic small family-owned ramen place, as its only vegetarian option it serves a wonderful ramen, thick and savory broth with a bit of spice. Only time in my life I actually enjoyed soy bean sprouts was in this ramen.

Note: ramen in Japan is usually a salty food (soy sauce in the broth) . Personally I found this one well balanced but it was too salty for my friend.

Quick, tasty and cheap - Edit
Vegetarian ramen was very tasty and the dish was served quickly. If there’s one con, it’s definitely the fact that you can smoke indoors. I found it a bit disturbing as I’m not a smoker myself, but other than that it was a very tasty and cheap meal.

Best vegan Ramen in Kyoto - Edit
The place is out of a Blade Runner scene and might seem a bit run down, but don’t let this discourage you - the owner is super nice and everything is clean. They use separate pans for the vegan ramen, one of the best you’ll ever eat. If I could give this place 5 stars I would!
