Would make one star if I could - Edit
I had the green poutine and the Cajun tofu steak.
Read moreThe poutine wasn't very deep in flavour. I'd also have wanted to see a more creamy or melty vegan cheese. A cashew cheese sauce dollop on top would have been nice and complemented their healthier menu. It was also a ridiculously small portion for $18.
The Cajun tofu was OK. The tomato sauce was very reminiscent of a sloppy Joe, and the steamed greens had a pesto on top. Was a neat fusion that didn't work. The rice was clumpy and had some very dry hard bits as well. The veggies and greens had what felt like a bit of garden grit on them, and I truly hate that mouth feel.
I don't think I'd come back.

Disappointed - Edit
I really don't like to leave negative reviews for vegetarian/vegan restaurants, but we were disappointed with this place. The food was okay; my dish had burnt sweet potatoes in it. It felt there wasn't care put into the food and water glass had specks of food on them.

Very average - Edit
Had the "classic vegan" pizza; it came out room temperature. The crust is likely an acquired taste, quite thick and not like a typical pizza; the toppings were quite strange, particularly the use of tofu and of a kind of dressing.

Good pizza. - Edit
I had their Classic vegan pizza. I personally prefer a thinner crust and they could go a bit lighter with the nutritional yeast sprinkled in top. Other than that, it tasted really good.

Never again - Edit
Ate at the Heartwood Cafe on the recommendation of a friend who said they had a great veggie burger. We sat on the patio and were told the complete menu was only available if we sat inside. Our friend told the server he really wanted the veggie burger and asked if they could make an exception since the restaurant was almost empty. The server agreed and brought out the full menus. My SO and I decided to share the mystery pizza and green poutine and asked for some plates. When we lifted off the top plate, the one underneath had old lettuce shreds and bread crumbs. Clearly they had given us someone’s dirty dishes!! Gross. The food was mediocre. The pizza was weird with toppings of tofu and sweet potato and the poutine gravy was bland with insufficient cheese. We were at the harbour a few days later and decided to try a smoothie from their waterfront location. Again, it was tasteless and the u e wasn’t blended in properly. Won’t bother with them again.

Not my favourite... - Edit
Unfortunately I was a bit disappointed with my trip to Heartwood.
Read moreI found the dining room very dark, hot and smelly. Not a bad smell but I described it to my boyfriend as “a old hippie’s house.”
I think the lady working was stressed because she was the only person in the front handling both tables and takeout. Unfortunately she ending up seeming a bit aggressive to the kitchen staff and delivery people and not really welcoming to us.
The food wasn’t great. It was expensive and nothing special. I had the green poutine which tasted very heavy and not fresh to me. I ended up only eating a few bites and not being able to eat the rest. My boyfriend had the Cajun tofu which wasn’t very flavourful and not much tofu.
I was really hoping to enjoy the restaurant as I love supporting vegan/vegetarian companies but unfortunately I can’t say I will be back.

A Halifax classic! - Edit
While Halifax has a growing vegan food scene, this place is an old staple! Fond memories of their Quinpool location from my days as a student at Dalhousie university (they now have locations on Gottingen as well as a seasonal pop-up right on the waterfront). Heartwood is vegetarian, but they can veganize most things (and staff know what it means to do that). I’m a fan of their bowls, but their green poutine is a nice healthy twist on an unhealthy food too.

Yummy and quick service - Edit
Cute little cafe with booths and a small patio. We got breakfast bowls (brunch is served all day!) and tried some of their desserts (they have many cookies and some cooked cheesecakes). All was decently yummy. Lots of GF and SF options, labelled.

Disappointing - Edit
I used to go to this restaurant all the time, years ago. I found that the quality was starting to deteriorate, so we gradually stopped going and found other places. I thought I would try again and went last night. Service was fine, but the food was disappointing. I had the Taco Salad and the corn chips were stale and the beans had been refried some time ago and were hard in places.
Read morePros: Service was okay. , Plenty of booth seating as it was almost empty
Cons: Lights too low to be able to read the menu, Food tasted tired and stale, Menu looks the same as it was 6 years ago

Lot of delicious vegan dishes - Edit
Nice place with patio near downtown Halifax with lots of delicious vegan food.
Read moreWe shared 2 vegan and gluten free dishes:
- the "Traditional Heartwood-Bowl ( vegan/gluten free) with steamed greens, seasonal roasted veggies, marinated tofu, toasted seeds, sprouts, brown rice and creamy coconut sause with fresh ginger and chili peppers
- the "Bean Burrito", a rich bean mix with spinach and peppers, cooked in an organic whole wheat tortilla with vegan cheese. It was served with salsa, corn-chips, brown rice and a sweet and spicy tomato sauce.
The food was fresh and the taste great.
Pros: lots of vegan options , fresh and delicious, patio

Not only is the spicy peanut sauce to die for, as is the mushroom gravy that comes on the green poutine. Service was great and over all great atmosphere.

It was our first vegetarian restaurant experience in the maritimes, and it was a good one. The restaurant has a whole lot of vegan options in their vegetarian menu. The peanut sauce on the veggie burger was so good.

Coffee and cookies - Edit
I have been here several times and each time it has been enjoyable. However, some of their food I find a little bland. The French fries I find a little salty and very crispy (sometimes too crisp). But all in all its a good place to visit. They make a mean coffee and the cookies are always good! It's pretty low key and a good place to enjoy a coffee, grab a cookie and read a good book.

Throwback to Old-Style Veg Food - Edit
This restaurant felt like the vegetarian places of my childhood. I wouldn't want to eat that food every day, but so few places serve old-style veg food anymore that it is a revelation when you find it. The kamut foccacia is especially good.

In Halifax we tried this first - Edit
On arrival in Halifax we tried this restaurant first. The food was very good, with a large menu, which probably accounts for the large number of diners. However the service was poor and our soup did not arrive until we were halfway through our main course, which had taken some time to come. The waiter seemed to be chatting with someone in the cooking area most of the time.

The entrees are great! - Edit
I have visited Heartwood on 3 occasions for brunch and lunch.
Read moreI love the atmosphere. It's dim and cozy inside. I love that they used potted ivy plants as centre pieces.
I've been impressed with my main meal all 3 visits. On my first visit, I had the portobello mushroom burger (one of my favorite meals of all time). Next I tried the black bean burrito. Then I had a bean and tofu breakfast burrito made gluten free. My meals have been fresh, fast and delicious.
I am not hooked on their desserts yet. I tried a gluten-free chocolate peanutbutter cheesecake and it tasted more like a cake than a cheesecake. I also had a gluten-free almond chocolate chip cookie, which was a little on the hard side and not as flavourful as some of the gluten-free cookies I have had in the city.
Despite that, I love their food enough to want to go back.
Pros: cozy atmosphere, great entrees, friendly service
Cons: desserts
