Serves meat, vegan options available. A small and quaint family owned and operated Indonesian restaurant hidden away on the corner of a residential block. Best known for its buffet, featuring a rotation of ten different items, usually a third of which are vegan or vegetarian. Vegan items are not listed but staff is knowledgeable on what is and isn't vegan, so please just ask. Some of the vegan items include tempeh and tofu kecap, tempeh stew, kering kentang, collard greens and jackfruit. Open Wed-Sun 12:00pm-8:00pm. Closed Mon-Tue.

Lots of options!

There are lots of options for vegans and vegetarians. The server was really helpful and knowledgeable about dietary restrictions. The food was delicious!

Maybe a bad day?

At prime lunch hour, there was no one in the place, which is generally a big old red flag WARNING. A man piled a paper plate with unappetizing selections from the small steam table, without a firm grasp of the definition of vegan. "Eggs okay?" I tried a few bites of this unimpressive, overcooked, tasteless jumble if tempeh, potatoes, white rice and eggplant, but could go no further. I pitched it all, including the plastic cup of lukeearm water and plastic utensils. Not sure why NYT raved about this place, but maybe it has since changed hands. Or maybe they were having a very, very, very bad day.

great Indonesian street food

We ordered the vegan tray as a couple-- not an official menu option, but it was rice with 4 options each, and there were 8 vegan options! 8!! Everything was delicious, filling, included tempeh which is high protein and rare to see at nonvegan spots. Indoor dining only has about 4 or 5 tables but I don't think you can make reservations there so be prepared to do takeout if needed. BYOB. Glasses not provided, only small plastic cups so bring them if needed, and maybe ice. Definitely get the green and red hot sauce sides, the food is made milder than usual to accommodate multiple preferences as it's cooked in advance and you choose it at the hot bar, unless you order one of the few made-to-order items.

Pros: selection, flavor, high protein/ good portions

My favorite restaurant

What else can be said about a such a legend... I've been going to Hardena for years and it is my favorite (not 100% vegan) restaurant of all time. The staff is very friendly and will give you a guided tour of their numerous vegan options. Must tries include the tempeh/tofu and creamy potatoes. On the weekends they have specials like jackfruit stew. Call ahead to order, you won't regret it! Wish I could give 5 stars

Pros: Tons of vegan options, Amazing staff, Seriously the best meals ever, and cheap!

WOW!

This was my first experience with Indonesian food and it has to be some of the best food I've ever eaten! The flavor of everything was so delicious, the portions were large, and the price was just right. I went in for the buffet, and though nothing was labeled, the staff was very knowledgeable about what was vegan. The day I went, at least half of the options were vegan. I can't wait to go back, can not recommend enough!

Pros: Cheap, Many options

Cons: Limited Seating

best tempeh

Love this place. I always get their tempeh. It's cut into thin strips and marinated in liquid angel tears or something because it is DELICIOUS. Super fast service and great prices (about $8 for an extremely filling plate of three items + rice). Aside from the tempeh, some other vegan options are collard greens and eggplant. They sometimes have jackfruit! Also try their chrysanthemum drink.

Love Hardena!

A small, very friendly and family-run restaurant feturing Indonesian fare. I go for the buffet every time, which is rice with two choices of item (as of the time of writing: $8). Items rotate daily and amongst the veg/an options are tempeh, tofu, jackfruit (favorite!), collard greens, and vegetable stews.

Pros: Delicious, Inexpensive, Friendly and knowledgable staff

amazingly delicious

I'm told they make their own tempeh, it's incredible and even ppl who don't usually like tempeh find it to have a pleasant texture and not bitter flavor. The jackfruit is also prepared deliciously and the eggplant is so tender. Everything is fantastic and you won't feel gross even if you overeat.

Pros: best tempeh ever

Cons: not so comfortable eat-in
