Good - Edit
I have been to Happy Buddha before at their old location and I absolutely loved it! The services was amazing and I loved the food, there were so many different choices I just couldn’t decided. I have now been to their pop up locations 3 times and I’m starting to enjoy it more and more each time I go. The first time I have a really bad experience, there was something about the food that made me feel really sick and I told myself I wasn’t going to go back. I did end up going back though and I had a much better time. I normally now go just so I can get a quick bite to eat after class but I still find that nothing really pops out to me on the new menu. The food it good but nothing that makes me say “wow”, I wouldn’t go out of my way to go here but it is a good option that’s close by.

American style - Edit
We tried the chorizo seitan burrito and the hot dog with chips and both were ok. Taste-wise the meals were satisfying, but not out of this world.

Plant-based comfort paradise - Edit
Great ambience - country and blues in the background, dim diner lighting, AMAZING food. Delicious, vaguely unidentifiable and addictive, this place warms you up inside out.

Love this place! Highly recommended for great, satisfying veg food - Edit
I ate here ate the old location but it is definitely on my list when I return to Shanghai. I had a delicious wrap and the vegan brownie and was so happy. The food was fresh, I liked that they didn't rely on a bunch of soy substitutes, and the portions were just the right size.

Unpleasantly surprised - Edit
I was really excited for this place after reading awesome reviews, but didn't really find it to be very special or especially delicious. The location has changed and its now inside a country bar which was disheartening to see a cow skull and signs for steak up on the wall. My pizza was pretty average and nothing on the menu really stuck out to me. Only good thing to say is it's vegan food!

A must go for vegans and vegetarians coming to Shanghai!!! - Edit
Place is had to find as it is not labeled on the outside other than a HB on the door. They were moving locations so menu was very limited but they had wraps and cake so we ordered both. WOW the food was good!! Cake was even better!! Met the owner Lindsay who was from Denver and the manager Ben from London.. they were great company and very hospitable! Food was so good I left to find an ATM and come back to buy more for the following day. They are moving locations but hopefully will be able to try more food before we leave.

Chocolate Brownie FTW - Edit
The restaurant is not big but looks nice from the in- and outside. I personally ate way better vegan burgers before but the quesadillas and the choclate brownie with ice cream were incredibly delicious! Stuff is english speaking nice and helpful!

vegan comfort food - Edit
This place is now all completely vegan! Such a great and varied menu with some comfort food choices and some healthier choices. I had the spicy black bean burger which I’d recommend. They also do the most amazing cakes.. I definitely recommend the coconut and rum cake! Friendly, English speaking staff and they hold events too.. they invited me to their all you can eat Taco Tuesday :) They also make all of their sauces/butter/mayo etc in-house and sell them in jars! I bought a jar of their pesto and it’s delicious.

vegan breakfast !! - Edit
I love happy Buddha and am a regular. I am very excited that they are now doing breakfasts too starting at 9.30- and that these are delicious. I’ve tried the quiche and the burrito - both are so wholesome and tasty. There’s not many places in Shanghai where you can get a solid western style vegan breakfast and happy Buddha has filled this gap for me. Seems like their menu is constantly evolving and the coffee hits the spot too. Great way to start the day and to support a small local vegan business. Highly recommended.

Went here while visiting Shanghai. The food was good, the place was small but welcoming. It also has a separate healthy juice bar at the front of the shop.

Great place in Shanghai - Edit
Whenever I am in Shanghai I make sure to stop by Happy Buddha. Most of their stuff are a good combination of tasty and nutritious, the place has a good vibe especially when there are less people, and staff is friendly. Good location, just south from Shaanxi Nanlu Metro station. Taco Tuesday is a must.

Cozy Cafe with Delicious Food - Edit
This is a cafe/restaurant with a cozy atmosphere and some yummie vegetarian and vegan food. I had the pesto panini, sweet potato chips and iced lemon tea (amazing). Also had the chocolate cake afterwards which was good. It wasn't too expensive as it is self service too. Overall definitely go check it out, there is a little health food store downstairs which is cool.

Nice salad and mac and cheese - Edit
I really enjoyed the caesar salad with vegan mac and cheese I had. Wasn't a big fan of the hotdog because of the consistency of the vegan sausage, but I'd like to go again next time and try more items.
Read moreSince it's a vegetarian restaurant I naturally looked for the vegan labeling on the menu, but found the labeling system a bit confusing. Some items have a sign that indicates that vegan options are available, while the majority of the items don't have any signs but they're actually already vegan.

A warm welcome. - Edit
Been here 3 times now for tasty burgers with sweet potato crisps (chips in American but not as we English understand chips). The taco Tuesday night is a good deal if you're hungry, all you can eat tacos for 88RMB, plenty of delicious fillings & it includes vegan ice cream. The staff are friendly especially the guy who speaks great English & seems eternally happy. It's not fine dining but it's comfy & tasty, the kind of place I prefer. I'll be a very happy repeat customer.

No more dairy! - Edit
Although initially vegetarian, they are now at least phasing out all the dairy cheese from the menu and switching it for vegan cheeses (which they also sell in jars for you to use at home!). The chef, Ben, always tries to please vegan guests as much as he can.
Read moreMy favourites are the quesadillas, pesto panini and that sinful coconut rum cake. And their ice creams! Hope they add more and more ice-cream flavours soon.
Last time I went there with a non-vegan friend who said the burger was a bit dry. I didn't try it, but it did look a little dry. She said the chocolate cake is to die for.
Drinks are expensive BUT there is free water!
Pros: vegan cheese, convenient location, friendly service
Cons: drinks are expensive

Great Comfort Food - Edit
I'm not a big fan of seitan, but I've still enjoyed many vegan dishes here - my favorites are the nachos, hotdog, and shepard's pie.
Read moreTheir desserts are some of my favorites in Shanghai. The chocolate cake, brownie, and vegan ice cream are all outstanding, non-vegans/vegetarians will love them as well.
Happy Buddha also regularly has deals throughout the week such as BOGO veggie burgers on Monday evenings.
The staff are very friendly and it's at a great location - the restaurant is above an eco-conscious/health food store.

Best vegetarian food in Shanghai! - Edit
I absolutely love seitan and was introduced to it when Serenity Seitan (now Happy Buddha) first started. I was hooked! I love the transformation of some of my favorite comfort foods from the US into vegetarian dishes featuring seitan. The mexican wrap is my favorite but also worthy of note are the cheezsteak sandwiches and pesto wraps. Visit Happy Buddha, you won't be sorry!

Seitan in Shanghai! - Edit
I went because I saw they had Seitan, and well, that is hard to find on the road. A welcome addition to Shanghai's veggie/vegan food scene. I would have preferred it if the Seitan bites were thicker piece of Seitan though. They were more like breaded bagel chips than delicious chewy Seitan. Still, go, support them, and eat delicious freshly made food. I hear their deserts are awesome too.

Closed on Monday! - Edit
Unfortunately we arrived on a Monday, and they are closed! We will try to get back here again soon and post a review. I've submitted an update to post their hours. Therefore I am only posting a 3 cows rating as we have not actually been there, but I must post a rating in order to post this information.
Read moreHowever, a couple of suggestions for finding the Happy Buddha: It is closer to the Jiashan Subway station off the #9 line than it is from the Shaanxi South Station off the #1 and #10 lines. The actual location is through the Jiashan Market gate and straight down the alley at the address: 259 Jiashan Rd. Once you head down the alley, the Happy Buddha is easy to find!

Update! Now that we've had a chance to visit we highly recommend Happy Buddha! The staff is super friendly, speak English, and the food prices are reasonable with good sized portions. My only regret is that I did not know that I would not be able to post another review. HappyCow limits you to only one review per location. :-(
