Deep fried everything - Edit
As big fans of Caribbean food, we were more than a little excited to hear about a new family-owned, plant-based Dominican/Trinidadian restaurant that even had the word “healthy” in the name. Unfortunately, this place fell really short of our expectations. We walked in without a reservation. The hostess informed us that they had no tables for the next two hours. She didn’t even give us the option of sitting at the bar until we asked. After getting seated at the bar, we spent awhile scrolling through the menu on our phones after scanning the QR code. That’s when we realized that nearly every item on the menu is deep-fried.
Read moreIn order to try to keep it “healthy,” we started with the Motha Earth Salad Bowl, and even that came with crispy fried onions. We asked them to hold the fried onions, but they came sprinkled all over anyway. Additionally, the “curry roasted tofu” on the salad was also deep-fried almost beyond recognition. Next, we got the Buss Up Shut Roti Plate that was honestly kind of gross. It came out cold, and the curries all had the same overly salty seasoning.
I hate to be overly critical of a vegan restaurant as so many good ones are currently closing, but it’s disappointing to be served fried, overly salty food that didn’t even taste fresh.
tl;dr this is one of those places that deep fries everything and focuses more on the cocktails than on the food.
Pros: good juices, family-owned
Cons: few healthy options, didn't taste fresh, lackluster service

I’m enthusiastic!!!! So excited to keep supporting this business. Kind, attentive service team and the food and beverages are top notch. I tried the Chunk steak at another vegan place in NYC and I was underwhelmed but HAAM knocks it out of the park. The empanadas, curry chicken tacos, generous portion of kale caesar… morirsoñando and tamarind drinks were so refreshing, too. The place is really beautifully decorated with an original mural. I want to come back and try dessert!

Vegan steak & more - Edit
After more than a decade of being vegan, it‘s strange to eat a steak that tastes „so real“. And that‘s not all they got. Nice experience. Friendly staff.

Incredible food! Travelled to NYC with some friends and this was our favourite meal by far. Delicious and vibrant, excellent staff, just YUM. Listen to the servers here, they know what they are talking about and always get the steak! Get the steak! Chimichurri is unreal.

Everything was really good. The yuca fries and soursop ice cream were especially amazing! Prices are fairly standard for a Brooklyn restaurant.

Inconsistent Allergen Info and long wait - Edit
On March 9th my partner and I made reservations for 5pm. We arrived shortly before our reservation time and as we tried to tell the staff about our reservation, they did not let us get a sentence in. There were a number of people waiting to be seated and people were randomly seated, regardless if they had a reservation, and even people that arrived after us were seated.
Read moreWe waited 30 minutes to get a table despite there being several open tables and used tables that just needed to be cleaned. When we were finally seated, the staff did not acknowledge our long wait time.
While we can all understand off days and rushes of customers, the egregious part of our experience was when we asked what their gluten-free options were. In our previous visit, we were told several times that the yucca fries were gluten-free, but now we were told they had gluten.
My partner cannot eat gluten and we did not feel comfortable eating here because of this inconstancy. I hope the staff can get on the same page about their allergen info.

Fun vibe- friendly staff - Edit
Sun Saturday night. We did NOT have reservations but they made it work. Every staff member had an incredibly warm and welcoming vibe. We started with the empanadas- I liked the chicken curry, my companion liked the beef and mango cheese. Me- not so much. But the chimichurri steak- wow. Yo motha’s mofongo was wonderful as well. Pricey place.

Delicious but expensive - Edit
I was impressed with the vegan steak and it’s the best replica in terms of texture that I’ve tried.
Read moreThe only reason for a missing star is how expensive this place is. I don’t think it’s quite a $30/plate type of place.
Pros: Great flavors , Great vegan steak
Cons: Expensive

Don’t forget about service! - Edit
When I dined at HAAM there was a party of 20 that turned this small intimate venue into a loud crowded space. At the beginning we sat for sometime without anyone attending to us until we became frustrated and had to call for help. The workers seemed to put all their attention setting up for people who weren’t there yet,, meanwhile ignoring people who were present. This was unfortunate because the food was very tasty. We ordered the wontons, empanadas, mofungo, steak, and jerk sandwich. We also ordered the mac-n-cheese that did not taste like macaroni and cheese at all. I know it’s difficult to replicate the flavors and textures with mac and cheese, but this dish did not come close. All in all, it’s a small venue with nice decor and tasty vegan food, but I strongly suggest they get their act together and make great service a priority!

I got the tamarind juice and the oyster mushroom burger. Let me just tell you that tamarind juice put me into cardiac arrest. For the burger it had a spicy buffalo sauce, which didn’t taste like buffalo just spicy. It would have been nice to have more of a balance but other than that bomb.

Wow I feel so much love from this meal😄thank you so so so much😄
Read moreThe ordering system here is very modern, it’s a giant factory industrial building , it’s not a regular restaurant, and there’s no dine in area, you have to order on the app, either Ubereats, Grubhub , seemless or DoorDash , and pick it up from the closet with the numbers by the window. It’s a very high tech system
