Large store

You don't need to belong to a coop to buy at this store (though if you belong, you get a discount). There are three branches of Green Star in Ithaca; this branch is Whole-Foods-size, with a large assortment of health-food-store choices.

Hidden gem

I couldn’t believe this co-op! It’s tucked away, but it does not disappoint. I went in looking for something quick and couldn’t believe how many vegan options there were. Will DEFINITELY be going back for a quick dinner or lunch!

such a selection!

this was better than wegmans in terms of vegan options and everything looked sooo good. they had a ton of vegan things, including local products and things made in house.

prices are a bit high but it’s to be expected for a store like this.

Pros: so many options

Cons: expensive

Paradise

Awesome and amazing paradise of organic foods. The grocery section is fire for all your bulk and small needs. An abundant produce section as well. Then you can pop over to the deli and prepared foods and get a banging sandwich, noodle bowl or salad- I’ve never had anything bad. All items can be prepped vegan. Top off your trip with a delicious latte. The staff is friendly and crafts the food with love. Thank you greenstar for being a wonderful place to shop. I wish a co-op like yours could exist in every town. #Veganuary

Pros: Organic , Lots of vegan options, One stop shop for everything

A must visit!

There are 3 locations. This seems to be the biggest based on photos. So many vegan options. Noodle bar, sub counter, espresso bar. Everything had vegan options. Frozen, fresh, refrigerated and dry foods all have vegan options. Many new items I don’t see elsewhere.

Electric car charger out front. $1.00/hour J-1772. You’ll need the EV connect app, easy and quick to register. can do Apple Pay.

Pros: EV car charger. 2 plugs. , Made to order counter. Noodle & subs , Pre made grab and go foods.

great grocery store lots of vegan options!!

Great grocery store with lots of vegan options! They have sushi, a deli, premade grab and go items that can be heated in microwaves they have there, and hot sandwiches/wraps. A great variety of vegan groceries. We got a vegan bean and tofu burrito which was very good and vegan baked goods which were tasty as well. I would’ve loved to try all of their other vegan items! The prdoduce was very fresh as well

Pros: lots of vegan options , reasonable pricing , clean

Cons: most meals have to be heated in microwave

Fresh Vegan Choices

The main branch of the local food coop has freshly prepared lunch, breakfast and dinner options for takeaway or dine-in, with picnic tables outdoors and some tables inside. There’s an espresso bar with many drink choices, a sandwich bar and a bowl & platter bar, all with friendly and efficient staff, as well as a self serve station with two daily soups, fresh bread, cookies, etc.

We ordered the vegan platter (hummus, dolmades, felafel , green salad, vegan tzatziki, tabouli) and the grilled tofu za’attar bowl with white beans, salad, eggplant and roasted potatoes. Substitutes are OK, as is “build your own bowl” with any of the prepared items in the buffet.

The coop also sells fruit, nut milks, local made tofu and seitan , wraps, etc so you can stock up for a meal or a picnic easily. Service was quick . Portions are large. This is good value, so if you have a choice, come here rather than Ithaca Bakery for a sandwich or lunch. The location is off a busy commercial road, best accessed by car but do able by bike or on foot, and there are EV chargers in the parking lot.

Non-members are welcome to shop and use the facilities.

Pros: Excellent food, Quick friendly service, Clean spacious interior

Cons: Not in center of town

Lots of vegan options

There are lots of tasty vegan to-go options here. I love the chocolate orange bundt cake, and their vegan club wraps are excellent.

My Favourite Place To Shop!

I love Greenstar Food Co+op! I am a member and like that concept! It is my go-to for all my healthy food shopping needs. They have a huge bulk and frozen food section which offers all sorts of delicious goodies. You can get Vegan, Vegetarian, Dairy, and Carnivore offerings. They cater to everyone. They also have a huge organic produce section with a wonderful beverage cooler in the same area. It's not a huge store and that's another reason I like it, it doesn't take a long time to get what I want. The staff is fabulous. They are very friendly and helpful, really nice folks. I recommend this store if you like healthy local foods!

Pros: They offer new and different items., The Staff is marvellous!, It's easy to find the items I need.

Not what it once was

Their old location had a really magical vibe and a great selection of artisan products you don't see everywhere. Now that they've moved, the selection has become a bit more generic, although it's nice to see that they still carry a good variety of vegan prepared foods. The staff at the old location was very friendly; the two employees I spoke with at the new location were a tad acerbic. COVID: Everyone was wearing masks, but there was little social distancing in spite of the signs all over the store.

Everything a natural food store should be!

Every time we visit Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen, we drive to Ithaca to stock up on bullets of Susie's Seitan at Greenstar. They usually have a great selection of it. They also have tons of delicious vegan selections at the hot bar and the deli counter, so we get food to bring back to eat while staying at the farm. This store has a good variety of cruelty free bath and body items and groceries. The staff is always welcoming and helpful. Makes me wish I was a local!

Super convenient, lots of variety

As a vegan college student I find the Buffalo St location to be really convenient. They have a ton of awesome fresh food, and their pastries are amazing! I highly recommend any vegan pastry made with chocolate. Their "chunks of energy" are a great alternative to granola bars for snacks. They often have vegan chocolate cakes, baklava and pies as well. As a grocery store they have a great variety of different stocks, nondairy ice creams, cruelty free body products and local produce. All ingredients are clearly labeled. Hooray for Greenstar!

Pros: Convenient, Has everything

Cons: Expensive

Best vegan reuben in town?

I have a hard time not liking vegan reuben sandwiches, so maybe I'm not a very good judge, but I think Greenstar's greasily-delicious vegan tempeh reuben is pretty amazing. It's crisp and buttery-tasting and saucy and a recipe for a good time.

Besides the deli, Greenstar has a fantastic selection of vegan foods - vegan cakes and baklava and dumplings, muffins and cookies, breads, produce and frozen stuff, fresh local tofu, giant slabs of tempeh, and a great bulk section full of cheap awesomeness - pastas, agave, dried fruit, nut butters, and soup and falafel and veggie burger mixes by the pound. Read the ingredients lists to find bulk granola, chocolate, carob, and other goodies.

Pros: great selection, incredible vegan options at deli, member-owned cooperative

Cons: can be pricey if you're not careful, cafe area is small and can be busy

good for supplies but skip the deli

I admit that when I first moved to Ithaca the greasy Vegan Pizza was cool, but then I ate a slice... I've tried other Vega offerings and I question if anyone in the kitchen actually tastes the food they make. I'm glad Food for the Planet opened across the street.

Pros: Staples, Mostly organic and local groceries

Cons: The deli, More of a small chain than a Co-op

I wonder what you mean by "more of a small chain than a co-op"? I'm a member and it does seem to be a member-owned co-operative...

Yummy but not as healthy as you might think

I eat at GreenStar often. They have tons of vegan and vegetarian options, and a lot of variety. Their hot bar is great for breakfast or lunch, too. I highly recommend the Tempeh Reuben (make sure to order it without cheese if you're vegan).

That said, you might expect that because most of the grocery items at GreenStar are organic/local that the Deli food would be too...but it's not. A lot of it comes from Sysco and is neither local nor organic. Their salad bar is always local/organic, so that's the bonus, but their sandwich items are not. Always good to know.

Pros: lots of variety, fast

Cons: pricey, not organic

Thanks for the heads up. We live in New Mexico but plan on relocating to Ithaca sometime next year. I'll be sure to inquire about their products before I buy them.
