Delicious wholesome Indian food

Tasty, affordable vegetarian and vegan food near UOttawa! The portions are huge (tbh one order is enough for 2 people or 1 very, very hungry person), super authentic and satisfying! There isn't much seating for dine-in but it's definitely great for takeout.

Great for students, but $2 extra for everyone else

This place is pretty lovely, and is only $5 for all-you-can-chew for students!!! I came here every evening as an undergrad at uOttawa. Apparently they may have some issues for pushing religion on people, but I haven't noticed this so much.

Delicious food and they're even listed on EthicalTree.com so you know you can trust it!!! :D

Pros: cheap

Cons: religious

Great food, super cheap, buffet 10/10

This is the place for super delicious vegetarian food, made by lovely people. When I was there they served a delicious brown bean stew, yellow lentil soup, a veg curry, green salad with home made dressing and pasta salad, rice and banana bread (cake) for dessert.

It was delicious and only $7 ($5 for students). Outstanding value and taste!

Pros: buffet, $7 ($5 for students), delicious

Sad really

Too sugary, okay, I guess if you like skinny men in dhotis walking past when you are eating. Ugh.

Pros: by university

Cons: sugary, only okay

have gone for over 10 years

I love Govinda's and have been going since around 1996 or so. I think it's necessary to correct the first review and make people aware that Govinda's is part of the local Hare Krishna Temple and Shankar is not the 'owner' he's the operator and head of the Temple. Now that said, I'm not a big fan of any organized religion and can assure anyone of like mind that provided you can deal with the fact that it's a "shoes off" at the door restaurant then you'll have no issues. I have never seen Shankar push religion on anyone. He's a tireless supporter of the local community providing food/support to Food Not Bombs and providing free food to some of the indigent community located nearby. Also by having such a great low key place to have a meal in the early evening before classes.

The only gripe I have ever had with Shankar was when he discontinued serving puri with the food (super delicious bread). The food is very simple and as another reviewer said, "healthy and hearty". You don't go here for the variety, you go here for the unrushed atmosphere, the excellent and warming to the core food, AND if you're lucky a conversation with Shankar who is omnipresent if the restaurant is open.

Pros: delicious food, inexpensive, + environment

Cons: very short opening span, in the winter the hill can be icy

Govinda's

One of the best deals in town if you're looking for a healthy, heart meal. This is a self-serving buffet-style restaurant, and there aren't a lot of selections, but there are a few options. You can't beat the price. When I went, there were already customers waiting for the doors to open, so get there early, if possible.

Pros: excellent food, healthy cuisine, good value

fair - better options elsewhere

The buffet was very small. They had potatoes with green beans. The green beans were mushy, but the potatoes were good. They had white rice and a lentil dish. There was also a lentil soup, somewhat spicy but nothing special. For dessert they had a cake which was also fair. They had a iceburg lettuce salad and white pasta salad that was slightly overcooked. It was $7 for all you can eat, but I didn't like anything enough to want seconds.

Last week I ate at India Palace downtown, which was 100 times better- though twice the price. It also serves meat however.

Pros: friendly service

Cons: only $7, healthy

yum

Govinda's is great. The owner Shankhar is very sweet, the food is all vegan, super cheap, plentiful and delicious. Love the pasta salad the best! He has the same few items daily, but they're always good and satisfying. The only downside is that he is very close to the university and he closes for around 2 weeks or a month every year after school ends because it's very quiet. Probably a much deserved break!

Pros: cheap, delcious , friendly staff
