Amazing!! But not open after 7:30pm

Fantastic place, I like the menu better than the other Gongde Lin around the corner. Had the tofu and mushroom pot. Wow!

So much vegan food!

Loved that there were so many vegan options. Especially enjoyed the tofu “duck”!😋 Definitely a must-visit if you’re in Shanghai!

Authentic Chinese

A lot of restaurants in China only have options with tofu - it’s refreshing to come somewhere that better caters to vegetarian diets and gives more options.

Food is good and service is the usual friendly and welcoming standard we have found across Shanghai.

Pros: Accommodating staff, Good options on menu, Easy to find

Interesting flavours

The marker on the map is currently wrong. Search 21 Huanghe Rd in Bing Maps and you get to the right place. Last orders at 7:30pm, closing at 8pm.
My meat-eating colleagues absolutely loved it, probably more so than me😄But I will definitely be back, just to try more of their food. Communication was a challenge, so it’s hard to find out which of their options are vegan. Some have it in the title though. I had the vegan chicken with peanuts and red Chili and found the sauce really interesting.

Calling Most All Vegans

I’m a long-time fan, from even before having gone vegan. The food is reliable, with lots of vegan options. My go to when using Meituan is the 净素辣酱饭套餐- admittedly spicy, but a taste sensation.

It’s not even a sensation feeling compared to what’s available now in SH. Most all vegans don’t do Gongdelin. Not at all cookout. Not for delivery. Believe that.

Fieldroaster...am l supposed to belive that? You can tell me that you were there, but am l supposed to believe that. Bad mapo tofu or feeling disrespected, you still dont got no restaurants up here!

Amazing food

The food is very tasty, my friend who is a meat eater didn't experience the need after that to eat meat at all in China and wouldn't stop convincing me to go back here for another meal.
One drawback, during my visit I noticed that many options on the menu were not available, it could be because they run out due to the high volume customers, but we still found excellent options.

Pros: Vegan chicken with peanut, Baos, Spinach and vegan meat cold rolls

Cons: Unavailability of some dishes on menu, Hard to find, it's inside a building

Closed on a Saturday evening.

After eventually finding the place inside the Carter Building. It was apparently closed (7:00pm on a Saturday) even though there were a couple of other tables eating. The place looked like it was either ready to close down and move out or it had just moved in (even though it’s apparently been established since 1922). So after a lot of faffing to find the place, we couldn’t eat there for no apparent reason.

Cons: Closed, Difficult to find

Excellent Authentic Chinese Cuisine

Cody atmosphere, quick service, reasonably priced, huge variety of dishes, a lot of mock meat options, such as the famous vegan deep fried ‘duck’. There speciality are dumplings. Highly recommend this place!

Not the best in service, overall still appetizing

We were expecting a 5-star hotel dining experience in this overly rated vegetarian restaurant, which was highly recommended by Lonely Planet and various travel websites. Much to our disappointment, their service is way below par as evident by how they ignore customers walking in instead of serving them with attention. First impression is somewhat lasting impression.

My first visit to Gongdelin was at the Huanghelu restaurant (功德林黄河路餐厅) which is just a milestone away from the Nanjing West Road’s restaurant and is their smaller branch. This particular branch is rather remote and confined (their full capacity is probably 10 tables maximum). The menu is completely in Mandarin and there is neither English nor picture of dishes at all. We had to request for recommendations and, they eventually provided judging from the fact that we were tourists. Our dishes were quite quickly served as soon as we ordered, since at the time of our visit, we were the 2nd customers for their dinner at around 7pm. The restaurant feels as empty as space, though it is tiny. We ordered mock duck, spring rolls, mushroom tofu, 2 bowls of rice and one glass of chrysanthemum tea. The food is simply sumptuous, and we love the dishes recommended to us. That costs us Y80.

Their staff seemed to be eager to knock-off as soon as it reaches 7:45pm (with only 3 set of customers for the day?), which I believe is extremely early for most restaurants. As such, we were rushing to finish eating our food to depart this place, without checking our bill. The cashier took 5-10 minutes to give us our change, which is quite annoying. Next, we realised we were overcharged with 3 bowls of rice instead of 2, and went to claim for refund the next working day. The same staff who served us last night were pleasant in refunding, much to my surprise as I had the impression that they were fleecing foreigners.

This branch is conveniently located near People’s Square train station. As our hotel is within walking distance to this restaurant, we merely spent around 15-20 minutes walking from our hotel. However, we had to repeatedly asked for direction as the walk is not straight forward and the building is not easy to locate.

All in all, the food price is rather decent, and so are the food quality and taste. We do not mind returning to try more dishes, but it’s certainly not in our priority list!

Pros: Decent and delicious food, Portion is just right, Location near hotel and public transportation

Cons: Indifferent customer service, Slow in giving us payment change, Early closure for the day

Didn't realize the crab dish had egg in it until half way in. Sucks as a vegan, also made my stomach hurt. They were so nice though and was a great vegetarian place....just avoid that crab dish cause it must've had like 5 eggs in it.

Pros: Great food and friendly, attentive staff

Cons: Eggs used in stuff when it could be avoided

Now you won't miss out on authentic & delicious Chinese food!

This place is 100% worth the challenge that it is to find it! The menu is incredible and relativity inexpensive, I'll be going back for more. There is a plethora of 'meat' and 'seafood' options cooked in an authentic manor which us veggies and vegans miss out on in China...well, no more. The atmosphere was great, relaxed and full of locals at lunch away from the hustle and bustle of People's Square. Definitely try the kung pao 'chicken'!!!

Pros: Impressive meat substitute options, Authentic flavours, Inexpensive

Cons: Not easy to find

I’ll be going back 😋

I stopped here and tried the Buddha’s Delight Tonic Soup. It was excellent, lots of mushrooms. It was a nice clean place with friendly helpful staff. Other reviews mentioned “mi fan” meant rice and that was helpful.

Pros: Vegan wontons clearly marked on the Eng menu., Nice tree lined streets to walk nearby.

Yum

This place was a little difficult to find, I had to ask a few people. There is a big sign on the outside of the building but a little unclear how to get to the second floor once inside. Take the elevator to the right when you walk in on the ground level. The fried noodles and veggie steamed buns were delicious.

On ne vient pas pour la déco, ou l’ambiance, mais la bouffe est très bonne.

Très bon. On mange bien.

Quand vous entrez dans l’édifice, prenez l’ascenseur à droite et montez au 2e étage. Le restaurant sera à votre gauche une fois arrivé au second plancher.

Le personnel parle un petit peu anglais.

Hot tofu!

Nice traditional place. The menus pages are labeled (vegetarian cold food, vegetarian fried food etc) but otherwise the menu was entirely in Chinese. I ordered spicy tofu and it had a nice amount of Sichuan pepper, really got my mouth all tingly!

Amazing meal!

After arriving in Shanghai, half starved, this place was a sight for sore eyes! Staff was kind, even though only one person spoke English. I had the spring rolls with Kung Pao Chicken and White rice. I would love to go back if I were to visit Shanghai again!

Pros: traditional , cozy

Good food, right on metro stop

The one staff member I got spoke good English, and there is an English menu.

Get off at people's square metro stop, exit 9. Walk to Huang he road across the street, it is the second building on the left, with a huge sign that says "Godly" 2F. Walk in this building, turn right, take elevator by the family Mart to 2F, and it's on the left when you get out.

Hours seems to be 11:00-14:00 and 17:00-21:00 with takeaway from 8:00-20:00, but that is based on my Google translate of their sign, see photo.

All my food was good. Had Kung Pao chicken, spring rolls, and vegetable buns. Cost for all 3 was 49rmb, but the spring roll and the buns were I think 9 each so they didn't add much to the total.

Maybe better to go to their place in Nanjing rd

This is a smaller outlet of "Gong de Lin", situated on first floor of an office building.

When I went there I was very happy to see the same menu as in their Nanjing road restaurant (5 minutes walk away). They have only a few tables, and they only had one English menu, so I had to wait 10 minutes for some other guests to make their selection. So the restaurant was very quiet.

Unfortunately, some of the items that I normally order were not available (Which vegetarian Chinese restaurant normally runs out of tofu???). Nevertheless, the food was good, and the waitress was funny and friendly (definitely a big difference to their main restaurant!), but unfortunately also not as efficient as her counterparts in the other restaurant. Being able to speak a bit of Mandarin also greatly helped to place my order.

My suggestion would be to go there if you are right in the area, and do not want to waste time, but if you do have a larger group, or want to spend more time, maybe take the extra 5 minutes walk to their bigger outlet on Nanjing Road.

Pros: Good food, Friendly staff, Quiet

Cons: Maybe fewer options than other outlets

Hours? Subway?

It would be helpful for this listing (and all the Shanghai listings) to have subway stop and hours listed. It's pretty hard to plan using these listings as a tourist, having no idea just by looking at the address where in the city it might be, especially with the map function not working.

Pros: good food, friendly staff

Cons: interesting menu translations

Quiet Cafe with Reasonable Food

This restaurant is also called "Godly" and is apparently a branch of the restaurant on Nanjing Road. This place is easy to find. 21 Huanghe Rd is a large building. There is an elevator on the right side of the lobby that will take you up to the restaurant's second floor location. The place is small, eight tables or so, and the ambiance is pleasant. I like mock-meats (I notice that a lot of people don't) so I ordered the Papaya Chicken... they didn't have that. They suggested another type of Chicken, but they didn't have that either. Finally settled on the Kung Pao chicken which I thought was good. It wasn't breaded, and it wasn't particularly oily... pretty good. I also had spring rolls, but these were certainly nothing special. It seems that the only drinks are teas (a bit pricey). The prices are comparable to the other 'moderate' veggie restaurants I've been to in Shanghai... dishes generally ranged from 25 to 40 RMB. The wait staff wasn't particularly friendly... I felt just a little like I was intruding. Anyway, I think this is a 3.5, so I'll give it a 3.

Pros: Nice ambiance, Reasonable food, Easy to find
