Not so special - Edit
I don't understand why everyone is so excited about this place.. I went to Gong De Lin several times and tried different dishes but it just isn't that good. Too sweet and too oily. It's not bad but there are better asian vegan restaurants in town😄

Delicious! - Edit
Really yum food, the sweet and sour pork was amazing. Good service and clean restaurant. Only downside is it's quite expensive for the portion sizes.

Hidden Gem! - Edit
I work across the road and never noticed it until today, you have to take a lift up from Swanston. Menu is massive and 100% vegan, very exciting, eating the Ma Pao Tufu and rice, very spicy, perfect. Service was really friendly and fast, maybe I’m here in a good day as opposed to the other reviewers.

Mean service - Edit
I love the food here, and I've been coming for years, even though it is a bit pricey. But the service is really weird/rude. Since day one of dinning, staff seemed to carry an air of disinterest. I always try to be friendly, but the two main staff just seem so cold. It's quite unusual! I hate eating here alone.

Pretty good - but go to the bar upstairs - Edit
The mock meats are all variations on a slab of flavoured protein. The veggies, dumplings, and sauces are delicious though. Go up to Goldilocks bar upstairs - they serve cocktails and some of the dishes from the kitchen.

Great food - Edit
One of my favourite places to eat in the city. They have a good range of vegan food here and I have to say my favourite dish is the sweet-and-sour “pork” on rice.

Reliably good food - Edit
A regular choice for vegan food in Melbourne CBD. Extensive menu with almost everything vegan.
Read moreVegetable dishes (fried green beans, sweet and sour shiitake mushrooms, Singapore noodles) are my preference over mock meat dishes. Extra chilli provided on the side if you like. Now on 2 floors both with different atmospheres.
Pros: Consistently good quality , Extensive choices
Cons: Staff can be a bit hit and miss

Convenient location for a quick meal - Edit
I was searching for a place for lunch in Central Melbourne and saw the signboard for this restaurant. I ordered a preserved veg and fresh mushroom noodles. For $12.80 the serving size was quite big, taste was ok. The dumplings were quite disappointing. The skin was thick and fillings was bland.
Read moreI also ordered the "special" fried rice, recommended by the staff. Bland, tasteless and the only ingredients were some peas and a few pieces of mock ham. Poor quality for the price.
If you were craving vegetarian Chinese food, it is probably an OK place to head to. Otherwise with the many vegan options in town, I wouldn't visit this place again.
Pros: Quite a number of vegan options, Convenient location
Cons: Expensive and meals were not value for money.

Ran into this wonderful place while strolling for dinner in Melbourne. Impeccable food, quick service and clean restaurant. I had sweet n sour pork and fried rice with moss and pine nuts. Would highly recommend this place.

The menu here is diverse enough that most people should find something to please. The flavors were subtle but pleasant, and the veggies not overcooked. Attentive table service.

Very good! Pan fried dumplings were so yummy and the sizzling “beef” was amazing to curb the meat cravings I’ve been unfortunately having lately! Will definitely come back.

This place is great! They have lots and lots to choose from. In my opinion this is definitely in the top Chinese style restaurants in Melbourne for Vegans. Well worth a visit.

Great if you like sweet Chinese food - Edit
20 years ago i would probably have given it 4 stars, i would have been stoked with the fake meat, and stoked to find a vegetarian chinese restaurant. Now that Melbourne as developed into one of the vegan hotspots of the world, i expect more. Flavour, for example. Creativity would be nice. Unfortunately the food is so sweet its hard to taste anything else. The fake meat imitations of classic fake chinese dishes such as lemon chicken and sweet and sour pork are pretty lame. The dumplings are frozen.

Average - Edit
As a long-time vegan, I’ve eaten in many Asian veg restaurants and this one, though conveniently located, offers just run of the mill fare. Staff appeared disinterested (you know when you’re given the impression you’re a bother just having come to spend money in their establishment?) and the food was okay but average. There are likely more rewarding veg haunts to discover in Melbourne. Portions were generous but pricey.

The vegetarian “pork” sweet sour was really yummy. Went there with meat eaters and they were surprised of the texture and taste. Cozy atmosphere, a bit hidden location.

Excellent vegan restaurant - Edit
We stumbled across this restaurant by chance and we were very impressed by the large range of chinese vegan food offerings. They seem to have expanded as the restaurant now occupies both the 3rd floor and the 1st floor in the same building. The same meals are offered on both floors, with the 1st floor being a somehwat simpler set-up. It appears to be fully vegan nowadays.

don't bother if you're vegan - Edit
We went for lunch yesterday (having eaten here years ago on our last visit).
Read moreThere is no vegan labelling and when we asked what was vegan, the lady hurriedly rushed through the menu pointing out about 5/6 veg sides and fried rice. She said none of the mock meat was vegan.....SO, i personally wouldn't trust what it says on here.
Plus it seemed really expensive compared to other vegan places.
Gopals is close by and thoroughly recommend there instead as they do a 'vegan platter' with drink/dessert for $12 which is a bargain and staff know what they're doing!
Cons: untrustworthy, inconsistent vegan info
