Care when ordering - not all vegan options are vegan - Edit
Golden House has a vegan section on their physical menu and when ordering online which is fantastic, however I got skeptical when I saw the vegan menu included dishes such as vegan chicken in oyster sauce, or vegan duck in honey chili sauce. I tried to contact the restaurant via their Facebook page, however was told I would have to speak to the restaurant directly as the page is run by someone else? Weird. I fancied Chinese food and since there are no other options nearby and due to the good reviews I placed an online order for vegan chicken in satay sauce and another dish, but added to the order box to please ensure the food was fully vegan. Shortly after I got a phone call to say that the seasoning in the satay sauce contains seafood. They recommended the Cantonese sauce instead which I was advised was vegan.
Read moreThe food I ended up with was lovely (but did not come with rice, and the online order system didn't seem to have an option to add a side of rice?), so boiled my own. I will likely order again but I would advise if you order to be very specific about what cannot be in a vegan dish. I have asked them to update their menu since clearly multiple items on the "vegan" menu are not vegan, but not sure that's going to happen.
So I'm giving 3 stars because food is mislabelled, however they were very helpful with finding suitable dishes. Very few restaurants in this area offer any vegan options so those that do should be encouraged and supported, but make sure you check when ordering that your food is actually vegan, I only know the satay is not but they may use the same non-vegan seasoning in other sauces.

Quite nice - Edit
Didn’t even realise that this place did anything vegan until I saw it on Happy Cow. They have a separate vegan menu. I did enquire about whether a couple of other things from the Sides/English section of the menu were also vegan but they weren’t. They don’t do vegan noodles either which is a major shame. That’s the main thing I’d want. But it’s a decent start.

The vermicelli rice noodles are vegan friendly. Just get the vegetable one with no egg.

Little gem - Edit
This is my new local Chinese. They have a separate part of the menu with vegan options. If you go in and speak to them, they will go through it with you. Fried rice without egg, mini spring rolls and satay tofu is a go to for me.

Not actually vegan? - Edit
So after ordering once (with a milk allergy too) and then not feeling well (thought nothing of it) we went to order again and we’re told they don’t actually do vegan food because it has milk in the tofu?! Not sure if they got confused or if it’s actually not vegan. If anyone can shed some light on this for me that would be wonderful.

This isn’t true I’ve been ordering for a long time. Tofu does not have milk in it. The menu is clearly marked with allergens.

Well I always buy tofu but they told me when i ordered that I couldn’t place the order because their tofu has milk in it. Its not all tofu but apparently theirs does. Didn’t seem knowledgeable on allergies at all

I had a menu through my door when they first opened which was clearly marked with allergens. I have no idea how it would have milk in it, seems crazy! Shop bought tofu isn’t made with milk and it’s definitely not homemade tofu as far as I’m aware. I am confused 😐.

Will ask them if it’s homemade, or what the brand is that they use then I will check it out.

I don’t have a paper menu I ordered online and I mentioned my allergies in the box for it and they rang to say they were cancelling the order because it has milk in the tofu. I also thought it made absolutely no sense. I eat tofu all the time so I know it’s vegan but that’s what they told me

Ok, I will be making further enquiries before I order again. I will ask where they buy it etc. They have misunderstood me in the past, and the communication is often lost, so I think there may be some confusion on their part, hopefully!.

Texture like Sun - Edit
With an impressive array of no less than 17 tofu dishes on the menu we picked well with a tofu Szechuan and a tofu in black black pepper sauce. The Szechuan was dry and spicy with bits of green chillis and garlic. Absolute perfection. The more saucy black pepper dish had a welcoming zingy peppery kick to it. A delicious side dish of mushrooms in gravy sauce worked very well as an accompaniment. Definitely worth coming back to Ryhope after all these years.

Plenty of tofu dishes. - Edit
I ordered the tofu in satay sauce and it was delicious. The Singapore rice noodles with veg were really nice too and none of the food was greasy like some of these places fail on.
