Awesome Food & Service

Awesome food and service. Highly recommend. Some of the best Indian food I ever had. If I visit Tacoma I’m coming back.

Excellent

As a cultural anthropologist who has spent years living in India I can attest to the fact that the vegetarian food at Gateway to India is some of the best you will find anywhere. The food is actually better than North Indian restaurant food in India; it is more like the kind of food that the best domestic cooks make for themselves at home.

Pros: friendly staff, great food, comfortable surroundings

Cons: can't really think of anything to say here, can't really think of anything to say here, can't really think of anything to say here

Rats running around inside

There were rats running around inside. We told the owner ansmd she did not care at all and replied with "it's an old building". I reported it to the health department. Gross!

Delicious buffet

We enjoyed a quick vegan lunch at their buffet. The potatoes were super along with the garbanzo bean curry and the coconut curry. Very friendly staff too.

Pros: Vegetarian selection, friendly staff, speed in and out.

Cares about vegans

This spot tries hard to accommodate vegan guests, especially during buffet hours. The food is reliably delicious. The complimentary lentil soup is vegan. The cilantro chutney is not. The vegetarian section of the menu indicates which dishes are vegan or can be made vegan.

Pros: Lovely owner who cares about vegan guests , Delicious Indian food

Decent.

Food was good. Clearly marked vegan items on the menu. Service was meh - lady working was rude. Man who was working could sense that and tried to be friendly. I ordered one star and the dish was super spicy! Mouth was on fire!

Pros: Vegan options

Cons: Service, Spice level is inaccurate

A favorite

If you call and order to go, like I usually go, just go ahead and tell them you're vegan and they will accommodate a dish for you. My favorite is always the Sag Aloo. Spinach and potato. Gateway to India is also always at the Proctor Farmers Market on Saturdays and they gracefully always ask if you're vegan to make sure they are serving you correcting. I find this very nice considering the crowds that are there.

A favorite

Relaxed atmosphere and a nice open feel to the place. Good service. The food is good and filling, and all meals include a cup of yummy lentil soup. Lots of vegan and vegetarian options on the menu. This place is a North Tacoma favorite, and with good reason.

Pros: Friendly and fast service, Comfortable atmosphere

Great place to eat!

I LOVE this place! Definitely one of my top two favorites in Tacoma. They have many vegan options that are clearly marked (vegan or may be made vegan.) I love the split pea soup they serve with all of their entrees, and the basmati rice!

Pros: many vegan options, delicious food

Cons: not 100% vegan

Delicious and easy to eat at as a vegan

Their food has been consistently delicious; vegan and vegetarian dishes are in their own section, and they are marked as vegan, or can be made vegan.

Pros: Separate menu section with vegan options, Good place to take non-vegans

Cons: Limited bread options

a Vegan-positive Indian restaurant

I have been to many Indian restaurants but the vegan options are not always that positive -- even at the vegetarian restaurants. Gateway takes this seriously as I believe one of the owners is also a vegan. Everything vegan-friendly is well- marked. If there is something that you want that may be vegetarian but not vegan, they will modify it for you. They do use the same fryer for all foods so be conscious of that. They may be able to bake some options instead of frying if you want and they are available to do so.
The food is also really good quality. There is always a large wait staff to help and check on you and always friendly.

Pros: Vegan-aware, Great food, Always busy but helpful

inconsistent

My wife and i have been there three times. The spices were very inconsistent each time. We had a waiter tell us there is no such thing to a question we had so I told him maybe he should tell that to the ones I have at home.
They do have some nice vegetarian choices
I found the prices a bit high and there is better around for the money

Probably the Best Indian Food in Tacoma

Let's face it: Tacoma is not the best place for ethnic food. Gateway to India is one of a few Indian restaurants I've been to and it's my favorite so far. I've done the lunch buffet once and had dinner 3 or 4 times. The vegan options are clearly marked with asterisks, which is handy, but I wish there were more of them. The aloo gobi is good, but I was expecting it to be more saucy. I've also had the vegetable biranyi, which I ordered at a 4 for spiciness because that's what I usually get at other restaurants. It was so spicy, I couldn't eat it. The next time I went I had the saag tofu and I ordered a 2 to be safe, and it tasted like there was no spice at all.
I wish the samosas and chutneys were vegan.

Pros: Tasty, Clearly labeled

Cons: Spiciness is inconsistent, Pricy

Great place to catch up with old friends!

Food is tasty, if but a little pricey at times. Vegan lentil soup is served free before every meal. Lots of tasty vegan options. What I love most about this place though is that you can sit and stay for hours---there's never a push to get patrons out the door, like at some establishments. I always come here when I know that a friend and I have a lot of catching up to do!

best indian in western WA

As a vegan you can trust that they are serving you what you ask for. Staff is knowledgable and will anwser questions. I would not eat at any other Indian Rest. in Tacoma. Even with the remodel there can be a wait but it is worth it. Enjoy.

Pros: family owned, authentic cuisuine, many vegan options

Cons: service can be slow
