Such a shame Fresh is no longer open. After new owners a while ago this place went downhill quickly. Used to be fantastic. Might be talk of relocating but at the moment it's no longer on Charles st.

Not much for vegans - Edit
Checked this place out but found very little on the menu that was vegan. Even the rolls were not vegan unless you took the gluten free option. So decided to go elsewhere.

Great for Community - Edit
Whilst the Fresh menu is albeit different due to recent change in ownership (which truthfully I favoured more to the current menu) its current menu is diverse and populated with wholesome vegan food as well as vegetarian. As one of the first and few vegetarian well-known eating places in Launceston, it is a great establishment within Launceston community.

Best Ever - Edit
Fresh is my best favourite cafe, and actually worth the drive from Hobart to Launnie just to eat here!
Read moreHuge vegan range, including tasty treats like cakes and muffins, and the best dairy-free smoothies I've ever tasted.
Staff are friendly, and the place has a lovely, ambient, retro, gentle, funky feel.
Drive to Launceston. You won't regret it.
Pros: amazing food, tasty treats, cool staff

Favourite Restaurant In Tasmania - Edit
I ate here whilst stopping for lunch on the way from Hobart to Davenport, as it is the only vegetarian venue I am aware of in Launceston. It is a cosy little place overlooking the green and next door to an environment shop. To add to the bohemian atmosphere, the place itself is covered in flyers advertising events to do with permaculture, world music an queer issues and handwritten adds in search for vegetarian house mates. It really seemed a meeting place and a melting pot for Tassie's alternative community.
Read moreTo the food - I was with 2 omnivores who despite their flesh guzzling ways were kind enough to drive me from Hobart to Davenport and who were at least prepared to give this place a go. All items on the menu looked unusual and dazzling but no-one would decide so we settled for the $60 tasting plate for 3 - always a good choice for the chronically indecisive who are very, very hungry. I asked for 2/3 vegan and 1/3 vegetarian, as my diners were quite adamant on their dairy that day.
The platter, when it came out, was very, very impressive, aesthetically as well as gastronomically. At least my vegan selection was, and I gathered from the satisfied grins of my fellow diners that their Uddery choices were much to their liking. The variety of dishes on the plate included: roast pumpkin with a raw beetroot dressing, corn fritters, grilled eggplant, giant pearl couscous which I've never come across before and which tasted like a better risoni pasta, a couple of colourful salads, and a couple of dips with flat bread. All very fresh, all very wholesome, very much of that half raw/half cooked approach to food which I very much like and very much craved for, having just come from Hobart with its myriad of mock meat Asian outlets.
Although the cost at $60 dollars seemed foreboding at first, the fact that all three of us were very full at $20 each seemed like a good deal. So I was going to stop it at that, but unfortunately the vegan berry cake looked out of the world, so I had a slice of that with a soy chai. The cake turned out to be the close to the nicest cake I've had in Australia, turning out to be both fluffy and moist to heavenly proportions.
Fresh on Charles turned out to be my best vegan dining experience in Tasmania by a long shot, and by a small shot perhaps in my top 3 eating sports in Australia. Needless to say this cafe comes highly recommended.

Lives up to its name - Edit
Fresh is located on Charles Street up the hill a little way from the Elizabeth Street intersection. Fresh overlooks the lovely Prince's Park.
Read moreThe cafe comprises two old shops connected in a renovated building. The funky furnishings include retro, repro and contemporary pieces. Very stylish.
The food is certainly fresh and healthy. Not much vegan food marked on the menu except for the rice noodle, pumpkin & tofu dish served with fresh spinach (also gluten free, $17), which was delicious, albeit maybe a bit overpriced. A dandelion tea with soy milk and a berry muffin (only vegan dessert available) came to $7.
I dined at Fresh on a Wednesday at lunchtime and it was busy, with a quiet crowd seated indoors and outdoors. The service was friendly and prompt considering that the cafe was almost full.

Fresh - Edit
The meals at Fresh taste delicious, and they include generous helpings. There are several good veg*n/raw-foodist dishes, though the majority aren't.
Read moreHowever, it's small so there aren't many places to sit. Also the meals are a tiny bit expensive (but not overpriced), though they are definitely worth it.
Fresh's staff are friendly, but don't hang around and chat customers up, though that's probably mainly because they're busy.
Pros: great-tasting food, Generous servings, good value
Cons: small & crowded
