Homey restaurant - Edit
The restaurant is so homey and cozy. I felt like I'm at home whenever I visit there. It's one of my go to spots as a vegan and their food is absolutely delicious and wholesome. It's like having a nutritious home-cooked meal just with a professional touch. The prices are also reasonable and they definitely give you your money's worth.

I took The orient express bowl that contains zillions of things : glazed sweet potato, tofu, red jasmine rice, bok choy, pink ginger jelly, black beans, avocado, carrots, etc, etc. Really a fantastic and tasty meal, super nice portion, plenty of great tastes.
The chocolate cake was a blast and had an original taste, if I remember well, it doesn't contain any sugar but dates instead.
While waiting for the meal, they offered me two falafel bowls, they don't deep fry them - so don't expect the Middle eastern version of them, I found them a bit dry but good and certainly healthier than the greasy ones (that I love so much) you'd find elsewhere.
Highly recommended.

Huge menu with so much variety I didn’t know where to start🤯 Great service from the man himself and awareness cards on vegan info which I found very cool! Everything is vegan, gluten free, dairy free, processed sugar and preservative free.

Free food restaurant is a lovely cosy restaurant. Plenty of delicious options. The staff was extremely attentive and caring. They use super fresh ingredients. The music was very relaxing. They serve complimentary digestive water with your meal. I had the black beans and beetroot best burger with the sweet potatoes on the side and it was delicious. They also sell frozen vegan meals😄I read in some of the comments that there is only one common table but apart from the common table there are 3 more individual/private tables. I highly recommend it and I’ll definitely come back.

To say we were disappointed would be the simplest, but it was beyond that.
The service was slow.
The menu descriptions do NOT match what you receive.
It would be MUCH better to be honest with the customers. "This is our super unique and different take on ____" is how they should describe the menu items.
My 'pancakes' barely qualified as pancakes, and the blueberries on top were frozen!
My wife's 'scrambled tofu' bowl had a very few pieces of tofu, mostly greens, and the tofu was in no way scrambled.
We'd planned on ordering desserts and opted not to after how disappointing the meal was.
If you're obsessed with healthy food & have a ton of allergies, this is your spot.
If you want good food at a decent price tag, go anywhere else.
We wound up here because it was the only thing open that morning before going to the airport, and we actually got bagels & coffee at the place next door after being so underwhelmed by Free Food.

Dissapointing Breakfast - Edit
I was really excited to try this place because of all the great reviews. I wanted the tofu scramble from the breakfast menu with bread and the gentlemen (I think the owner) suggested rather having it in a wrap. I accepted his suggestion only to see on the bill it cost an additional R40 and when I queried why he told me it’s the tofu wrap from the lunch menu. An additional R9 was also charged on top of the change to the tofu wrap? He did change the bill to what I had originally ordered for (scramble tofu and a flax bread roll). The tofu wrap was average and lacking in flavour. I did get a chili sauce which made it better. We also had the ice cream stack. It was also sadly average. I would have thought the pancakes would be warm with the ice cream but they were cold. I was sad they didn’t serve coffee. It only has 1 large table so everyone sits together - I wouldn’t imagine here is the place to meet for meetings or any personal talks that you want privacy.

I found Free Food on HC and likes the reviews, so my daughter and I found our way here. So glad we did. The place is owner-operated and just oozes a great vibe. We went twice during our recent Joburg stay - and tried the flapjacks, tofu salad, a couple bowls, tofu scramble wrap, smoothies and juices, and best of all, the mushroom olive pizza. It's not often you get a non-tomato-based pizza that's this good, and wow was it good. Free Food has partnered with a bunny rescue and there are some awesome bunny references and items for purchase as well (we bought a whittled wood bunny that my daughter loves). Also on offer is frozen food to take home and enjoy. Seriously, be sure to eat here if you get a chance, it's wonderful!

We arrived by uber and the directions put us in the parking lot adjacent to the restaurant, so we didn't see it at first, as it is somewhat hidden by construction. We were immediately greeted by Ariel who heard that we were visiting and welcomed us to South Africa. We looked at the menu, but I also told him that I was craving something low-carb and he suggested a spicy tofu stir fry with low carb bread. My boyfriend had a coconut curry with red rice. We both had a mint chocolate shake. All was extremely fresh and very tasty, seasoned perfectly. We were too full to order the desserts. They also have frozen and refrigerated food to go. Great place for amazing all-vegan fare!

Delicious & healthy food for eat-in or take away. Good drinks, and dessert as well. My only complaint is that the food menu on the chalkboard isn't very descriptive. I'd like to know what is in each of the dishes. For example I don't know what an "Alpha burger" is, and instead not having to ask a million questions, a more descriptive menu would be nice, similar to the drinks & sweets menu that lists ingredients.

I was there a few days ago and it was amazing! I had the alpha burger which was delicious with the chocolate milkshake! My friend had the iced mint green tea with the falafel wrap! We had a taste of everything and it was incredible! For dessert we had the chocolate cake, which is to die for! They also have a wide range of meals, Icecreams and even vegan cheeses! I am definitely going back!

I went today to Free Food with 5 work colleagues and even though the place is quite small, the food and drinks are absolutely yummy. The moist chocolate cake was one of the best ever and so filling! :) Very friendly staff as well. Will definitely go back for lunch or take aways.
