We ordered the clearly labeled vegan lentil soup only to find chicken in it. - Edit
The only thing this place managed to actually make vegan was my salad. I bit into a piece of chicken out of the LABELED vegan lentil soup. The bean burger stated vegetarian but vegan without Mayo, they still put mayo on it. I would not recommend this place to any vegan. In all my 5 years at this I have never experienced such a thing.
The manger came and tried to explain then that it was ham in the lentil soup and that when it “was first made it was vegan”
Just not worth the stomach ache guys. I understand things happen and I’ve experienced those things, lots. This was just totally ridiculous.
Some of the best food I’ve ever had. The waffles were amazing and the portobello burger was like no other. We’re visiting and wish we could have a restaurant like that close to us.
Only one vegan dish (coconut curry hot pot) and only slightly more vegetarian (if you eat fish) options. Good place for meeting friends or a first date. I’d like to come back, but I think the menu changes often and don’t like having limited options.
The was only a single vegan full meal, which was tasty. There is a couple of vegan sides and one starter (hummus). So there’s very limited options. More options for vegetarians. Nice, relaxed feel with friendly staff.
After searching online for restaurants with vegan options near our hotel, we chose Five Loaves for lunch. It's a fun cafe with a few vegan options (or items than can be "veganized")on the menu. Our waitress knew the menu well and provided prompt service. We ordered the Black Bean Burger and the Carolina Grain Salad with tofu and shared. The salad was good however, the Black Bean Burger lacked "something". Maybe they left of the red pepper jam, maybe it needed guacamole or a chipotle vegan mayo. It was just ok.
I love five loaves and have been lots of times without issue. However, over the weekend in the downtown location, I ordered a vegetarian salad and found a small piece of bacon. I explained to the server that I'm vegetarian and had found bacon in my food but their apology was not very genuine.
Not so easy to find vegan options but tasty! - Edit
I had a little bit of trouble finding vegan options here, but the staff nevertheless was able to accommodate me and put something together that wasn't on the menu. They do have a good vegan wrap for lunch with eggplant. I also ate here before I was vegan and they have a ton of great vegetarian options. Very tasty overall.
It's great for vegetarians, and good for dragging those omni friends along, but it is very much lacking in vegan options. What they do have is pretty good though, and they're very friendly about double checking things for the paranoid ones out there (myself included). For reference, went last winter.
We obsessed over 5 loaves as soon as we saw the menu- it was even better after eating the food. In our visit to Charleston we kept wanting to go back to 5 loaves because the food was so tasty and memorable. It is one of my best memories of the city!
Ate here tonight - the food was excellent. I ordered the arugula salad, butternut squash ravioli and white chocolate cranberry cake. Everthing was good, but the ravioli, with beets, cranberries, and a lovely light sauce, was extra special. The service was also great and wine bottles are 1/2 price on Wednesday & Saturday evening! What a deal. Lots of veg choices and a few vegan ones, too. This place is a real gem for vegetarians looking for a nice place to eat in Charleston.
