We were excited to check this place out after reading through the reviews, but we were completely underwhelmed. There’s not really any vegan food on the menu, although they do list VO (vegan optional) on a handful of their meat based menu items. The staff was not at all knowledgeable about which items could or could not be vegan, which was a little concerning. We ended up ordering the pita wrap with a side salad. It was ok, but nothing to get excited about. We asked about their vegan poutine, which has a lot of mentions on happy cow. But they don’t make that dish any more, so we ordered some tater tots instead. We didn’t ask about the fryer and cross contamination because we were really hungry after a big hike and thought we were better of not knowing. I ordered a blonde ale, which was dark, hazy, and heavy, not at all light and refreshing like a typical blonde. The only redeeming thing about this spot was the back patio, which was really nice with redwoods and space heaters. I suppose this is a fine lunch spot if you’re in the area and desperate for food, but counter to a lot of other reviews, it’s not vegan friendly.

Bummer. Sorry your server didnt help you out, but we have many vegan options. Beyond burgers, Vegan nachos, Vegan tacos, Vegan pizza,, the veggie pita wrap, as you know and the beautiful salads. I will use this as an opportunity for another training for the staff.

Vegan with Views - Edit
Loved our outdoor meal at Fernwood overlooking the beautiful redwoods. I had a beyond burger and the Blistered Shishito Peppers. They offer gluten free buns and the burger was very good. The peppers were to die for! Servers were very friendly and knowledgeable.

The Beyond burger is great, and so are the tacos. Easily the best restaurant in the area. The poutine was absolutely amazing! The location is beautiful too!

Delicious, lovely ambiance - Edit
Asked for the vegan option quesadilla and the three tacos. Added potatoes and guacamole. Thirst quenched with ginger beer, sitting under heaters on a beautiful deck in the Redwoods. Service kind and efficient.

Loved the vegan pizza, poutine, and pepper + potato tacos - Edit
Really enjoyed the huge meal split between three very vegans after a day of hikes at pfieffer Big Sur state park. Appreciated all the customizable options. Really fun place for drinks, late nights, and eventually even dancing on the weekends. Fun way to meet new people over yummy vegan bar food and drinks.

Vegan Poutine! - Edit
My partner and I were hungry as we were driving through Big Sur. Nothing seemed to offer any vegan options, and then we found Fernwood.

I was so amazed to discover they can make vegan poutine! They came with huge side-winder fries, chanterelle mushroom gravy, and vegan cheese. The meal felt surprisingly light and not too heavy. But it’s a huge portion, so eat it with a friend!

A really lovely restaurant; the outdoor seating area is almost magical, the way it’s situated amongst the redwoods; the staff were really nice and accommodating; the poutine with wild mushrooms that I got was nothing short of incredible—really the best French fries I’ve had in a long time.

Vegan Galore - Edit
Now under new management in the kitchen and consistently adding new vegan menu items/specials on the reg. As of the newest menu change a wide array of vegan options are offered for most of the menu items. Gluten free vegan pizza, Beyond Burgers, Smoked Faux Meat Crumbles, beer battered Chanterelle and Oyster mushrooms, burritos, etc.

The General Manager Dianna Ballintyne is an awesome human being and she hired a cook who was a long time vegan chef and updated the menu with vegan options. The only place in Big Sur with Vegan!
