Made a special trip to get here... - Edit
On a recent visit to Porto I made a special trip to visit Fava Tonka. I dragged my friend into a taxi and we travelled for half an hour to get there. We were ignored for a good few minutes on arrival (never a good start!) but once we were seated the staff were very friendly and helpful. All but one of the dishes on the current main menu could be made vegan. Also, most of the wine was vegan, and the local red wine is so good. Me and my friend had 4 dishes between us. The food was beautifully presented and the restaurant has a lovely natural calming decor. Taste wise, we felt that the food was delicious but that there was something missing ie crunchy greens, as everything we choose was thick and mushroomy. I guess it is still the winter / sping season, and perhaps the next menu will be crisper and more green. We didn't have pudding as we were full up. My half of the bill was £49 which included a tip and 2 and a half glasses of wine, I didn't think this was too expensive, but perhaps it is for Portugal.

It's vegetarian, but... - Edit
This restaurant is vegetarian, but they can make some of the dishes vegan. While some criticize the portions for being small, I found them satisfactory. Though on the pricey side, the freshness and high quality of the ingredients justify the cost and the dishes are beautifully presented. The King Trumpet mushrooms being prepared in the open kitchen looked just amazing! The decor, featuring old walls, herbs dangling from wicker baskets, and a stone sink with an antique tap, added to the charming ambience.

Delicious but expensive - Edit
The food is high-end, haute cuisine and really amazing. Never tasted so many different nuances in a few tiny bites. But this has its price and Fava Tonka is really pricey.

Overstanding food, but terrible staff - Edit
The food pretends to be "haute cuisune" and so it is. The portions are tiny but extremely well prepared, with dense taste and appropiate textures. No doubt about the execution.
Read moreThe problem is that the service is very poor. We asked for 3 plates and we did not get them together but one after another, with half hour of waiting in between. As the plates were not meant to be shared, while one person was eating, the other was watching. With the final plate, we received directly the bill, with a clear indication that we shall leave ASAP, because of the next reservation (and of course without a possibility to ask for a dessert, which we finally managed to order afterwards). But the problem was the waiting time for the food, not that we spent too much time talking! Very rude. Definitively this is not a treatment that you expect from a restaurant from this price range!
Finally, this is mostly a vegetarian restaurant, where the vegan options are rather limited. It is a fancy place, but I would not come back on my own, unless looking for an elegant dinner with omnivores.

Um restaurante pequeno mas muito bonito, onde fui após ter lido o algumas revisões positivas sobre o mesmo. Os funcionários receberam-nos bem inicialmente, embora nos advertissem logo que a cozinha estava prestes a fechar e provavelmente não teríamos algumas opções (embora tivéssemos feito reserva do almoço antecipadamente, e na altura sem qualquer advertência nesse sentido). Seguimos as sugestões da funcionária que nos atendeu, e infelizmente o único ponto positivo foi a apresentação visual; a sopa de cebola que nos serviram era salgada e enjoativa, e as outras opções tinham um sabor aceitável mas nutricionalmente muito pouco interessantes e com porções muito pequenas para o seu preço. A sensação global com que ficamos foi que na tentativa que de inovar a parte visual acabaram por comprometer significativamente a qualidade dos pratos. Ponderamos regressar noutra oportunidade, mas infelizmente a primeira experiência não foi boa.

They change their menu every month, using new vegetables from the season. They use igredients I haven't even heard of! But it's super good! Really recommend the experience. It's a bit on the expensive side though.

Great experimental cuisine - Edit
Great for people that appreciate experimental cuisine, they make use of many local ingredients as well as some less known (to locals) foreign ingredients. In my opinion, the best vegetarian (exclusively) restaurant in the Porto region.

The service is excellent. On week days the daily menu includes a soup, one drink, the daily dish and a coffee for only 10EUR.
