Serves meat, vegan options available. A locally-owned cafe serves North African and Mediterranean cuisine, which includes many vegan dishes that are clearly labeled on the deli display case. Vegan items include lablabi, mujadara, spice roasted mushrooms, Moroccan lentil soup, hummus, zaalouk, mama houria, and more. The owners are vegan-friendly and can tell you what is in each item, since everything is made-in-house from scratch. They always have one or two gelato flavors that are vegan. Order at the counter and they will bring your meal to the table, or get carry-out. Open Mon-Sun 11:00am-8:00pm.

Tasty vegan options, and on the Returnable Take-out Container program - Edit
Best thing? This place is on the vanguard of the returnable/reusable container program being piloted in A2. Get your food in these sturdy containers, and return them at any participating restaurant (Zingerman's, Ginger Deli, Cinnaholic). Soon, this will be the norm in A2.
Read moreIn a town full of Middle Eastern restaurants, this is the only place that makes hummus that tastes the way it should (I realize this is subjective, lol), makes a surprisingly creamy vegan gelato, and skordalia with enough garlic to burn off your own eyebrows. Very friendly staff and quick service.
Pros: Consistently great food, Very friendly staff, Quick service, and returnable take-out containers
Cons: Wish they had even more vegan options

Solid Middle Eastern Food with Vegan Options - Edit
This is the first non-vegetarian restaurant that I have been to in Ann Arbobr. I went here with some friends who are Ann Arbor natives. El Harissa is a great ethnic hole in the wall eatery. I have spent a lot of time in the Middle East and love the cuisine. El Harissa is unique that many items are available vegan with some interesting fusion takes. The one thing I didn't like was that everything was done by weight. I would have preferred a set platter or sandwich combo as I have a pretty hearty appetite. I opted to go for a large bowl of Moroccan Lentil soup that came with pearl lentils, veggies, swiss chard, and Moroccan spices. It was hearty and filling which I liked. I think the soup was about $6 and got it with a side of Red Quinoa tabbouleh which I never had before. I found this to be a flavorful take on a classic recipe and was made with parsley, fresh mint, lemon juice, Tunisian extra virgin olive oil, herbs, and spices. The server also dropped off some pita to pair it with. I think my total was about $9 for everything. My friends who dined with me ordered off the extensive cold salad bar that was done by the weight and they seemed to enjoy their food. I would easily go back here to sample more of the menu. The server was friendly enough which always is a plus.

Fabulous,friendly, and fresh! - Edit
I love the unique flavors and variety of vegan options (clearly labeled!) at this family owned cafe. Everything is freshly made on site (except the bread, which they purchase from nearby vendors). It is one of my favorite places in Ann Arbor for carry out or casual dining. My must-haves include lablabi (a mildly spiced chickpea stew), mama houria (carrot dip), Moroccan zaalouk (roasted eggplant dip), lentil soup, spice roasted mushrooms, spice roasted cauliflower, and Tunisian salad. Everything is priced by weight, so let them know your price range when you order. Highly recommended! I would give it five stars, but Happy Cow only allows that for all-vegan businesses.

Lovely neighborhood Market Cafe with Friendly Staff - Edit
I first learned of El Harissa Market Cafe when my son's class took a field trip to learn about North African cuisine. It was kind of the owners to host a group of first-graders! I enjoy visiting their deli for a quick bite of unique flavors -- either in their cozy dining area or to-go. Each item in the deli case is clearly labeled with a Vegan or a Vegetarian label and they have several unique dishes that are not generally available elsewhere. I do find that their food is fairly mild, but they always cheerfully add additional spice from their kitchen! Truly a neighborhood gem!
