Veggie Burgers & Buffalo Cauliflower Tacos

AMAZING veggie burgers and buffalo cauliflower tacos. Cute little space in the center of Alajuela, with indoor/outdoor seating and good wifi. There's a secure parking lot across the street that's only 600 colones per hour. The staff is super sweet and the service is good :)

Pros: Great Veggie Burgers & Buffalo Cauliflower Tacos , Pet friendly , Average prices

Cons: The rest of the menu is just okay

Good in theory

Went to El Chante twice during my stay in SJ. The first time I got the chalupas which were alright but tasted as if the pico had gone bad. The people I was eating with had the cauliflower buffalo tacos. These were tasty and so I thought we may as well hit the place up again before leaving being as it was all vegan. I got a pad thai that had hard noodles and a strange sauce, I couldn’t finish it. Good in theory, some tasty items, cool vibes, but menu needs some reworking. Some of the staff could be quite rude and wanted to charge my friend for a to-go box one night and not charge the other night (maybe just a one-off staff member?). We also ordered the ceviche as an appetizer and never received it which was disappointing since we wanted to try this popular dish.

Pros: All vegan, Variety of menu

Cons: Staff can be rude, Food can be sloppy

Exceptional!

You could basically close your eyes, throw a dart at the menu, order whatever it lands on, and not be disappointed.

This is one of those places that manages to find the perfect balance between whole, healthy, foods; creative, made-from-scratch recipes; and mouthwatering flavors. As if that weren't enough, the decor is charming and the service is great.

What are you waiting for?

Pros: Everything is vegan, Reasonably priced, Delicious

Cons: None

Not to miss in Alajuela!

What a relief to arrive to that lovely place! The food was delicious, so were the home made beverages. We ate there, and went back the following day for take-out for our flight back home (a suggestion! You make everyone around jealous of your meal).

Pros: Delicious vegan food, Lovely place, Friendly staff

Cons: It opens at noon! Breakfast would be great

Good food bad service

I was very excited to have this vegan place in such a not vegan-friendly neighbourhood. We didn't have enough time to try more than one dish from the menu and a smoothie but both were great. I was disappointed they didn't have any dessert I could take with me on my flight. Menu is only in Spanish even though most of the customers are tourists (it's less than 3 kilometres from the international airport). The guy who was serving us was very rude and impatient. He wasn't eager to answer any questions about food (we didn't ask more than 3 questions so there was no reason to be so annoyed). It was lunch time and there were only me and my boyfriend and another European couple in the whole restaurant. The couple next to us used their phones to translate the menu because the waiter wasn't keen to explain them anything. I'm not happy to give 3 stars to the only vegan restaurant in the area but they really need to improve the service and print vegan menu. The situation where the waiter is annoyed by customers asking about the food is unacceptable for me.

Pros: good food, fully vegan

Cons: rude staff, no English menu, no desserts

Great food

Friendly staff and delicious food. I had the vegan burrito with salad and it was amazing. They also happily boxed it up to go for me as I had to catch a bus. I'd definitely go again.

Understaffed

This pleasant restaurant offers an attractive vegan menu. I had a portobello burger. I didn't read the menu carefully, the burger turned out to be a portobello mushroom between a bun with fixings. I would have preferred a burger. I would have ordered dessert, but waited a long time without getting any attention, so I skipped dessert. Ordering and getting my order was quick, but I was the only customer at that time. The place was never crowded, nevertheless the two staff and kitchen people had more than they could handle. Be prepared to wait.

Cons: Slow

Surprising Find!

All Vegan and incredible! We had the Nachos, Patacones and Falafel Pita.
The Nachos were among the best I've ever had and I'm a vegan chef from Los Angeles. I've traveled all over trying many vegan places and this one is top notch!

Pros: All Vegan Mostly Organic, Run by a sweet family that lives on the premise, Very affordable for the portions and quality

Best vegan food in Alajuela

Loved all the food I tried there. Highly recommend the garbanzo burger & onion rings. Staff is great & very helpful, but be patient, there's usually only 2 people working, one cooking & the other serving

Pros: Great food, Decent prices, Good atmosphere

Cons: None

Awesomeness, Big tasty portions and family run.

Very good vegan place . Lots of choice . We had the burgers one mushroom and one chickpea which come in a home made bread bun with avacado and sprouting pea shoots. They come with hand cut fries or salad . The lemon and mint drink is really refreshing . All of the ingredients are high quality and the owner is a trained chef, he is helped by his sweet mother waiting table's.
Great find close to the airport

Pros: Extensive vegan menu, owner/chef speaks perfect English

Cons: none

a good vegan place

All is vegan even if the menu isn't clear (costa-ricains doesn't understand vegan so it's written vegetarian). We took home-maded juices and pizza (they no longer put vegan cheese but it's very good).
Please change the color from violet to green

Pros: all vegan, good

BEST VEGAN BURGER OF MY LIFE

amazing burger, amazing sangria, owner was amazing, his mama was amazing. Can't recommend this place enough. Thought that a veggie restaurant in a tiny town near the airport would be average at best but we were blown away.

They even make the buns!

Also I think happy cow may be wrong, as the owner told us the whole menu is vegan?

Love this place. Definitely visit if you can!

Pros: everything

Cons: side of fries was small

Highly recommended

We visited the place last year on the last day of our vacation and I'd suggest anyone flying from Alajuela to go. The food and drinks were really good and they were very accommodating to my girlfriend who has lots of dietary restrictions. The food was very much in the style of a US cafe, and would hold its own if located there as well.
But mainly, the owner was extremely helpful to us. We had an airbnb reservation in what appeared to be a shady area and he was very upfront about it when I seeked his opinion. He actually went the extra mile and walked us to a nearby hostel that his friend worked at. We were truly grateful.

Perfect

I highly recomend this place. The atmosphere is nice and the stuff very friendly. The menu offers some veganised costa rican dished but also international ones. The homemade drinks are delicious. We also really liked the chickpea burger and the falafel pita. The absolutely best part were the cakes though. You have to try them!

Pros: amazing food, nice staff

This place saved our last night in Costa Rica!

First of all, delicious! Secondly, inexpensive :) My bf and I got to our airbnb in the kind of sketchy neighborhood near the airport in San Jose around 630pm. We were to fly out early the next morning so our vacation was over except dinner. Alajuela is too far from the areas of San Jose that have vegetarian restaurants, but we found thiss place 8 minutes away. I could not believe it existed in this neighborhood! Not only is it all vegetarian with a ton of vegan options, it's all organic! Also they care about the environment and use eco-conscious to-go packaging. They sell a variety of health food products inside, and it was decorated so nicely! It was like a healthy vegetarian oasis. We ordered two pasta dishes to go so we could eat them during our long day of travel the next day instead of gross airport food. The chefs and waiter/waitresses were very nice too-there's always someone who speaks English there if needed. Anyways if you are arriving or leaving from the Juan Santa Maria International Airport (the main airport in CR), definitely eat at El Chante Vegano!!!

Pros: All vegetarian, a lot vegan, Organic, Eco-Concious

Cons: sketchy neighborhood but worth it
