It’s challenging being a vegan at times, especially when people aren’t clear what veganism is or they mistake it with vegetarianism. I am normally understanding of this, and try to explain the difference as best I can, but in over ten years of being vegan, my dining experience at Easy Bar was by far the worst I’ve ever had. I was told by the waitress that the only vegan item on the menu was the burger. When I questioned further, I discovered the bun was made with eggs and milk. I asked if they had another type of bread and she said they had baguettes. I said ok, and was served my burger on a small baguette. When the bill came, there was an extra charge of 1.10€ which they said was for the bread. When I asked why I had been charged to substitute one bread for the other, they said because the baguette was bigger than the bun. I said it would have been appropriate to tell me about the extra charge while I was ordering, but not after I had already eaten. The waitress then began to raise her tone and argue that she didn’t have to substitute my bread in the first place and was not obligated to tell me about the extra charge beforehand. I tried to be constructive and tell her that their menu was labeled improperly calling it a “vegan burger”, and that they should change the menu or serve the burger on vegan bread. Then the waitress fired back that the restaurant should not have to bear any extra charge for the bread because someone can’t eat their hamburger bun. She then said very angrily that she was going to remove the extra charge and pay for the bread with her own money, but that it was the last time she was going to make any exceptions or do any substitutes with the bread. Then a male staff, presumably the boss, came over, and said in a harsh tone that she had the right to not tell me about the extra charge just the same as she had the right to tell me. I said this is not about the money, you are serving food which is mislabeled on your menu. In response, they told me if I want “real vegan” food that I should go to a “real” vegan restaurant. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. At that point I said ok, paid my bill and left. Because of the treatment I received by the staff, and the fact the burger was not that good, I give the Easy Bar one star. #Veganuary
Nice and friendly staff but the only thing vegan on the menu was a really less than average vegan burger with fries. If you’re REALLY starving, it’s a good choice but otherwise wouldn’t recommend it.
