Great juice, meh food - Edit
The juice was great! I was there at noon on a Saturday and we were the only customers. The room didn’t smell good. We ordered the “tuna” wrap and the Sante Fe wrap but were given the Thai one accidentally. I didn’t correct them to be fair but the smell of the place wasn’t great for waiting so I figured the Thai wrap would be fine and took it. The tuna one was good enough taste wise, some romaine in it would have been a nice texture with the “tuna,” the Thai one wasn’t good. I would suggest they add other textures to the wrap, it was like weird tasting nut pate in a tortilla. Or maybe just stick with selling only juices and smoothies and a couple food items that they can perfect.

Excellent Vegan Cafe - Edit
Went for lunch and tried the Sun Tuna and Santa Fe wraps, and a Carpe Diem smoothie. All excellent. The menu has a lot of smoothie options that look great that I'd like to try someday. Will definitely return.

So-so experience - Edit
Came here for a quick bite just after we got into town. Ordered an açaí bowl and a salad. The açaí bowl was good, but really it's pretty hard to mess them up. The salad was pure disappointment. It was literally just a bowl of leaves with some nooch (?) and sunflower seeds sprinkled on top with a side of dressing, which was too tart and had no other flavor. It was very plain and the portion was small for what we paid. Good thing we were just looking for something light to tide us over until dinner.

Great juices and smoothies, mediocre food - Edit
Every juice or smoothie I’ve tried has been amazing. Fresh ingredients and creative combinations. I also appreciate they used compostable take-away containers - but in the Midcoast there are very limited options to actually compost those items.
Read moreUnfortunately the food offerings I’ve had were less impressive. The tempeh poke bowl was very salty and heavy, and took a very long time to be brought out, despite us being the only customers on a sunny afternoon in peak season. The grab-and-go options were ok - but again we’re kind of salt heavy and didn’t taste totally fresh.
I think Earth Candy is a great idea and I love the focus they have on offering locally made products, but that it needs some refinement. Maybe a more limited menu would help.
I also was a little put off by the fact they also sell do-terra essential oils. MLM companies are inherently predatory, and also espouse falsehoods like the oils can be ingested and are “pure” so they can not trigger an allergic reaction - which are both false statements.
I’d be willing to try the food again if Earth Candy can sort out the salt content and wait times.

Vegan wraps & salads - Edit
I tried the sun tuna wrap, Santa Fe wrap, and Italian salad. The wraps were a bit soft and could have used more texture, but still tasted good. The salad was great. This place was a breath of fresh air in an area where there are very few vegan options.

incredibly disappointing - Edit
I hesitate to think about reviewing a plant-based establishment with only two stars, but my visit to Earth Candy truly yields a "Needs Improvement" rating. We were the only two customers in the cafe on a Thursday in February around 1:30. We ordered two wraps, a soup, and a salad. While the wraps were not already prepared and needed to be assembled, the soup and salad appeared to be already prepared. Each item was served at the counter individually as it was ready, and in all it took about 30 minutes for us to receive all of our food. The portions were very small. Everything is served in compostable (disposable) containers. The mock tuna salad tasted good, and was the best thing we ordered, but the wrap was about 6 bites of food, served on a small handful of spinach as the only vegetable. The Thai wrap on a coconut wrap, Pho soup, and kale Caesar salad were not worth the money, and left me completely unsatisfied.
Read moreWhen the kale Caesar salad arrived without the croutons that were stated on the menu (vegan Caesar salads always excite me), I asked for them after trying for about 8 minutes to get the server's attention. She showed me a bag of commercially-made croutons, and said she didn't have many left. I said I wished I knew that when I ordered, and she looked down, grunted "oh, sorry", then added "they have a little egg in them, I hope that's ok". Earth Candy had been listed on HappyCow as vegan, so I thought everything would be vegan. At least the server thought to tell me about the egg, I had exclaimed my excitement at having a vegan cafe when we first ordered- she did not correct me at that point. Our whole visit was close to an hour, which felt far too long for us being the only customers who ordered items we could have prepared completely from scratch at home in less than that amount of time.
I won't be back to Earth Candy. There are far better options for my vegan tastes and needs at other places in Rockland that are veg-friendly. I hate to not be able to support a vegetarian business, but everything about my visit to Earth Candy was unenjoyable.
Pros: healthy options, vegetarian (though not vegan)
Cons: small, expensive portions, slow, unhelpful, unfriendly service, everything served in takeaway containers
EarthCandyDavid
Dear Sara,
Read moreThank you for your well thought out honest feedback. And we are sorry that you had a bad experience. I will try to address as many of your concerns. First of all, February is a brutal time for a cafe to stay open and yes our help although reliable was not very personable. In fact, she is very shy and perhaps lacks self-confidence. We feel we have addressed the service issue.
We use compostable and recyclable containers. I continue to search for sturdy food-safe environmentally friendly containers, the options are limited and expensive. But we are one of the first to compost and recycle everything and look to buy our food products in compostable packaging and shy away from organic growers who use plastic. This gives us a much more expensive product but it is worth it since we feel we are only guests on this planet.
All our food is vegan except for the croutons which being Gluten Free contain egg whites to bind the bread together. I am always looking for an alternative and I have tried making them myself but they fall apart. I have told my employees to inform people the croutons are gluten-free and contain egg whites.
As for portions, I can not speak to what you were served that day so not sure if it was a mistake or our actual portions. But, yes, I do not believe in supersizing our population. I am trying to be true to our mission to serve healthy food products that your body will benefit from and healthy portions are part of that.
If you decide to give us another try, ask for me, Leslie the owner, and we can see if we can improve your experience.
With kind regards,
Leslie

Advocate for plant based - Edit
Pleasant surprise to find an all vegan restaurant in Rockland Maine, just off the Main Street. Food is prepared to order. Great options. Wish we had tried more. Honest staff (croutons weren’t vegan). Family operated. Couldn’t tell if they also maintain a plant based diet, but obviously supportive and an advocate!

Midcoast Maine Vegan - Edit
Had the pleasure of eating the steamed veggie bowl at the newly opened Earth Candy. Made with yummy, properly cooked, and well presented kale, chard, carrots, red cabbage and toasted sunflower seeds on warm basmati rice topped with tangy, citrus house dressing. While briefly waiting on meal, offered gift of twenty days of unlimited yoga and meditation for twenty dollars at adjoining yoga studio. Left satisfied and energized. Located behind Main Street off Tillson Avenue.
