Delicious!

We had an outstanding dinner. Delicious flavors, lovely presentation, great service. We had the vegan chutney sampler to go with the complimentary flatbread, the brokaw avocado chaat, and the vegan curry with poori. All were amazing. I can't wait to go back!

lovely atmosphere

My partner and I have gone to Dosa on Filmore a few times usually for a nice dinner date before going to a show in the area. If an item is vegan, it is clearly marked on the menu, also some items, like dosas can be made vegan by omitting the brush of ghee (clarified butter) that goes on at the end just before serving. The staff knows what vegan means and is very good at making sure you get the food vegan. There are enough options that you get a good selection to choose from and there are plenty to share. Very nice restaurant and good choice of you're going out to eat with non-vegans in the Fillmore neighborhood.

Pros: friendly and knowledgeable staff, Nice atmosphere

Cons: serves meat

Poor Service but Great food

Requested vegan chutney and was given non-vegan version. Fortunately, I questioned the server about it before eating it. Server brought vegan version on 2nd try. Ordered mung bean dosa for entree and it was very tasty.

Pros: delicious food, vegan menu (have to ask for it)

Cons: poor service

Fancy Indian restaurant, adequate vegan options

Definitely make reservations if coming on a weekend evening as you might be waiting a long time without one (I've even waited a moderate amount with reservations). There are benches inside for waiting, fortunately. This is probably my biggest gripe with Dosa; if I've made reservations and am paying for a nice meal, don't ask me to wait too. However, once seated, the experience is very good.

They have an uncommon combination here: a full bar with an inspired cocktail selection, an upscale experience at an expensive but sane price, and authentic south Indian food. One of the highlights of Dosa is a very knowledgable waitstaff that have always been able to help me navigate the vegan selections.

Some of the best south Indian food around with a nice ambiance; recommended for dates and adventurous small groups.

Pros: Good food, Helpful staff, Cocktails

Cons: Need reservations/wait time

Creative menu with many Indian vegetarian items

This is not your typical Indian restaurant. The menu is very creative, so you have spinoffs on typical Indian dishes, often with non traditional ingredients. There are also some typical Indian menu items that frequent diners to Indian restaurants would know about. The portions are appropriate, so you could easily be full with one entree, but could stuff yourself with an entree, & splitting an appetizer & dessert. The menu's core is South Indian but some North Indian dishes are offered as well. They do not have traditionally associated with other regions of India such as Gujarat. Vegetarians & vegans will not have problems here as the menu has marked items & the staff are familiar with ingredients as well.

My wife & I have had:
Great beet croquettes, rava dosa, the winter uttappam, masala dosa, kale fritters, the 5 mini uttappam combo & the desert rasa malai.

3 things I do not like are:
* tables are very close to each other so it can be difficult to hear the person in front of or next to you that you actually want to hear
* reservations are hard to get, though you can walk in & possibly get seated
* the salt lassi drink was extremely thick & salty.

Pros: creative menu, good service, food is good

Cons: tables are too close to each other, loud, expensive

The Foofy Dosa Place!

I'm extremely hard on places like this. Many visionaries try the concept and many fail. The concept of taking street foods and common dishes moving them to America into the palacial fine dining palace of millions of dollars of renovations, foofy named cocktails, fusion music blaring over carefully arranged decor.
So when my boss asked me to make a reservation for 'Dosa' on Fillmore, I asked if had heard him right.
Upon entering I almost rolled my eyes at what was seeing. Ohh I could not wait to try the fare out at this jaunt.
Regardless my boss and our guest are from S.India, was unlikely we were going for 'four course meals' and 'wine pairings'. They do not drink and did not need menu's.
The namesake itself, 'Dosa's' are nice. I had the 'Five Moons' which were five diff Uthapam's dished up with sambar, coconut and tomato chutney. Discussion of idli's with our server was almost too endearing to educate him a bit.. The sambar oddly was very salty that eve and surely an 'oops' as that is not common.
In this lavishly decorated, almost packed and nice ambiance space on Fillmore.. my airline size Diet Coke that was served to me aside a glass of ice made me giggle a bit.
Overall it is a very nice place to unwind by yourself or with friends, that special someone. Depending on who you are, only you would know if to bring your visiting parents. They either are going to fall over converting the prices or go back home bragging their kid is soooo rich he/she spent blah blah dollars on DOSA!!!
We will be back to try out everything else on the menu:)

One of Our All-Time Favorite Restaurants!

We agree with everything the two previous reviewers said. I really think I could eat here every day. We have eaten at Dosa many times, always at the Fillmore location. In early April, 2011, we ate at the original Dosa, on Valencia Street, and both locations are amazing. The Fillmore location is much bigger and flashier, but the Valencia location was friendlier and the service was personable and excellent. We love that they have a chart that shows exactly which dishes are vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, etc., so we can easily choose the vegan options (of which there are many). Two of our favorite dishes are the Mung Bean Salad and the Fire Broth and they are both vegan. Most everything on the menu is gluten-free as well. Unfortunately Happy Cow limits us to giving this restaurant only 4 stars because it is not 100% vegetarian, but it is so much better than many purely vegetarian restaurants that it would be a shame to pass it up for that reason.

Great food and service

This place recommends reservations, but we had no trouble being seated at 6:30 on a Monday. The waitstaff was great, we never had to wait for anything. The food was terrific. They are very accommodating to vegans and have a separate list to show what has dairy and egg, that was shown to us when we indicated we are vegan.

Pros: tasty, fast, friendly

Cons: serves meat

If there was 10 stars, Dosa would get all ten.

This is the greatest restaurant I have ever been to and I have been to really great restaurants all over the world. The atmosphere, decor and ambiance hits you as soon as you walk in and you know immediately you are at some place special. The menu is amazing with so many interesting choices. I am a vegan and they are more than accommodating.

I had the beet soup and the flavors practically knocked me off my seat. I have never tasted anything in my life with such an abundance of rich flavors. I also had the mung salad and it also was so delicious and edgy, I can't begin to describe the experience of both these truly remarkable and healthy dishes.

My entrée was a vegetable dosa and it was also beautifully presented and the flavors and the taste were so astonishing delicious. It was served with three sauces and none of them were overly spicy. The dosa was not greasy at all and prepared with health and taste in mind.

The presentation of each dish, the beautiful manner in which they were all served and the impeccable service was done with so much care and genuine sincerity to satisfy the customer at all levels.

Dosa is most definitely a restaurant on a different plateau than any other restaurant i have ever been to ....... I have to commend the owner, the people that work there, of course the chef for his brilliant execution of the cuisine and the management.

The restaurant was packed and I never for a moment felt that they were too busy to attend to each customer with the utmost care. It is obvious that this restaurant experiences huge crowds every night and is well prepared for the enclave. I was sitting with a lot of people around me and all I could here were "oohs and aahs".........

You have to dine here. Dosa is more of an experience than just dining out. Make sure to make reservations .....

I don't think I will ever be able to go to another restaurant without thinking about Dosa. So, this is my new hang out for sure.
