If you’re looking for good vegan comfort food- look no further! Their coconut bacon tastes exactly like the real thing, and their smothered tempeh is to die for! All of their sides are delicious and the food is reasonably priced.

The Mac and cheese is probably the best vegan Mac and cheese I’ve ever had. I also got the smoked coconut bacon BLT and it was delicious. The menu is small, but solid options.

Wonderful little restaurant - Edit
I would eat here often if I lived in metro Detroit. Everything is vegan. We shared a great sampler of soul food with tofu Cajun "catfish," corn bread, collards, sweet potatoes, black-eyed peas and rice, and mac 'n cheese. The two soups we had also were excellent: an okra stew and a curried squash bisque. We enjoyed a good carrot cake for dessert. We wanted chocolate cake, but it was sold out.

During the summer, this is the perfect place to pick up food before heading to the neighborhood beer garden that's maybe .25 miles away (if that.) Food holds up well, making it great for takeout...pro tip is to ask for no utensils or plastic bag, then use your own (always good to skip plastic!)

Being from Michigan I go back once in a while and am always fortunate to be able to have a meal at Detroit Vegan Soul. Love the greens and mac n cheese and honestly everything I have tried has been perfect. The service has always been super friendly and my experience is even better when I get to say hi to one of the owners! Oh, and the dessert! I love the cake of the day that greets you from the counter!

Love this place. Great food, great staff. It’s not everyday that you can get a vegan catfish meal and definitely get the hush puppies, they’re spectacular.

A gem of a restaurant - vegan or otherwise! - Edit
Great little place with a nice menu. This was my first time visiting and I had the smothered tempeh and it was YUMMY! I also had the "Sock it to me" cake (it was like a cinnamon coffee cake). That was really good as well. I can't wait to go back again!

loved it! - Edit
I found DVS by accident. It was charming and the staff were very friendly. I didn't have the :soul food" per se, but I had an avocado and veganaise sandwich with the sweet potato chips. I thought it was very tasty. I make something similar at home with hummus and avocado, so I enjoyed the change. I also had the snickerdoodle cake. This place is worth trying. If I get to Detroit again, I would definitely return.

Wow! I am so glad I got to try this place out while I was visiting Detroit! While I may be a little biased because soul food is my absolute favorite, but this place was just so amazing.
Read moreI got the fish sandwich which came with slaw and potato slices. I eat larger portions and I couldn't even finish it. BUT IT WAS SO GOOD.

Somewhat disappointing - Edit
We were visiting from Montreal (I’m vegan x 3 years) and I found the menu to be really great concept (never had vegan southern-style comfort food); I was so excited to try this place.
Read moreSuper friendly staff!! I had issues with the food though- I ordered the hush puppies and found them dry and salty, but the dip was great.
For the main I had the tofu scramble wrap and added avocado and vegan cheddar. The wrap was SUPER salty to the point that it just tasted like salt and I couldn’t taste the ingredients. I didn’t enjoy it at all. Also ordered a side of Mac n cheese; it was ok, nothing special.
Being Canadian, I found the portions small for US standards! I wasn’t particularly full when I left.
My fiancée actually loved the hush puppies. He ordered the soul plate and he also loved it.
Because of that and the great staff, I’m giving it a 3 instead of a 2! It’s a good effort but a miss food-wise in my opinion.
Pros: Super friendly staff, Cute decor and laid-back vibe, Unique menu
Cons: Food too salty and nothing special taste-wise, Small portions

Delicious soul food - Edit
Great assortment of soul food items including classic comfort foods like mac and cheese, cornbread, BBQ, collard greens, and hushpuppies. I tried the tofu catfish with roasted potatoes, corn and broccoli mix, and hush puppies. While the sides weren't anything sprcial, they were well prepared and complimented the delightfully prepared tofu with a cornmeal prep. I would love to come back for brunch and to try out their smoothies.

Wow, this was great! - Edit
We were visiting Detroit for a wedding and we were looking for good vegan food. This place delivered that and so much more! We were greeted at the door by a very cheery young lady who welcomed us. The email ire staff was friendly and Evetone made sure we were having a good meal.
Read moreI had the Soul Platter which consisted of collards, mac-n-cheez, maple glazed yams, hoppin John and a corn muffin. The muffin was a little dry but other than that, everything was delicious, well-prepared and beautiful to look at too!
My wife had the DVS Breakfast sandwich which she loved. The tofu “egg” was sliced thin as was the vegan sausage and coconut “bacon” . It was served on a bed of spinach and a delicious roll. We make these at home, but I’ve got to say, this was better! (I snitched some in exchange for the maple glazed yams!)
A great experience all around. Friendly, comfortable, delicious.
Pros: Freindliness, Deliciously prepared food, Comfortable setting
Cons: They didn’t have any desserts left ☹️

Detroit Vegan Soul is such a special gem of a restaurant found near downtown Detroit. Not only do they serve incredible soulful vegan food but they do so with a lot of heart. The owners are dedicated to providing healthy food options in neighbourhoods that need it. They have everything you can imagine wanting to eat when you first turn vegan! I hadnt has a milkshake in so long and was able to enjoy a delicious one there! The food is of great quality and will not disappoint!

A good cheezeburger - Edit
I had been wanting to try this place for a long time after growing up on traditional southern cuisine. Finally, boyfriend and I came here for lunch after exploring Belle Isle. I had intentions to order so the Soul Plate that has the collards and mac and what not, but the price seemed a little steep for just a plate of small sides. And they don't allow substitutions, which is kind of silly for a plate of SIDES.
Read moreWe both ended up getting the cheezeburger with potatoes. I've gotten pretty tired of the traditional veggie burger that traditional/carnivore restaurants sell as a veg option, so this was a bit refreshing. I was satisfied and couldn't even finish my meal. My boyfriend (not vegan), however, didn't really care for the burger and thought the faux cheese was too gooey. He was happy with the milkshake he ordered afterward, even though they ran out of the chocolate mixture that was supposed to make it... you know... chocolatey.
May or may not come here again. I'm sure I can make my own collard greens and mac just as good and not as salty.
Pros: Not your traditional veggie burger
Cons: Staff had a MEH attitude, High price for small portions

Sunday Brunch - Edit
My wife and I just visited this place for the first time with a couple of friends. It was a sunday brunch, so it was a limited menu, I enjoyed the Pepper steak, it was fantastic! Not a single complaint could be had with any of the food served to our table. One small error by the waitress, but it made no difference in the enjoyment. Service was almost as good as the outstanding food we were served. It was busy, but the wait was pleasant. We will be going back, it is worth the extra effort to cross the border from Canada.
