Everything under one roof - Edit
Come for the variety, return for the ethics. Almost everything they sell is vegan and/or cruelty free. Everything else is vegetarian. Palm oil is also avoided and all loose goods are packed on site with lots of packaging-free refill options.

Spread the word - Edit
This place is amazing - it has so many different options for organic and sustainable food and other products - but it seems so off the radar, like the only way people hear about it is through word of mouth. It really is a gem in the King’s Hedges area.

Hidden gem in King's Hedges! - Edit
Hidden gem of a wholefood/veggie shop in King's Hedges. 100's of products & whole foods including some organic, gluten free, vegetarian, vegan, and options for intolerance/allergy sufferers. Daily Bread is an ethical shop that puts people before profit and directs a substantial part of their profit to charitable causes.
Read moreFrom their website: "Daily Bread provide work opportunities for people who experience mental health problems or some kind of disability in order for them to gain work experience and to build confidence." Their friendly workers pack a lot of the products themselves and in compostable packaging - green labels for organic and yellow labels for non-organic. They pack dried foods (flour, nuts, fruits, seeds, legumes, etc), also a fantastic range of herbs and spices, & loose tea (both black and leaves/petals). You can request a special size order of packed goods in advance, or pre-order a product in bulk at discount! In the months prior to Christmas they sometimes offer their popular Christmas cake packs - (including vegan or gluten free option) a recipe and everything you need for your cake.
All the fruit and veg is organic. There are always seeds, and sometimes living herbs, plants, and cut wildflowers on offer too.
There are also a lot of pre-packed goods including a large selection of vegan milks - oat, nut, soya, pea protein, etc. Largest variety of flours I've seen in a shop. A list of their products and prices is on their website. Fresh bread is delivered from a local bakery (it sells out quickly but you can order in advance/place a standing order). Fresh foods e.g. vegan cheeses, in the fridges, frozen foods e.g. vegan pizza, ice cream, pies, frozen veg in the freezer). Daily Bread has an organic food refill station offering 20 of their most popular dry food products, & also refills of shampoos, hair conditioners, hand wash, laundry liquid, fabric conditioner, washing up liquid, etc.
The coffee shop serves hot/cold drinks, cakes and sometimes savoury snacks - eat in or take away. There is a big park right next door that is perfect for a picnic as well! They have a suspended coffee scheme where one customer can pay-it-forward to another.
The greeting card selection is one of the best in Cambridge (smaller but similar range as garden centres). Includes charity cards. Much of the card range is packaging free.
5 star hygiene rating.
I'm so lucky to live not too far away that I can visit often. They kept us going through the pandemic

Worth a visit - Edit
Great shop for all your vegan needs.
Read moreMost items are pre-packaged. According to their website, they use a landfill biodegradable packaging (i.e. not the usual industrially compostable stuff), which is better than a lot of places, but it would be nice to see more packaging-free items. They also stock lots of items in manufacturer packaging. I was glad they had a refill station but was disappointed with its size/variety (maybe ~10 dry items and ~5 wet items in total). Hopefully it will grow larger!
Loads of variety of products - especially various types of dried beans, lentils, etc. Some products stocked seemed to be from major vegan brands (e.g. Oatly), while others looked like smaller/unfamiliar brands. Also great for vegan toiletries and household products.
The cafe is small and has vegan cakes available.
This Daily Bread location is smaller than its Northampton counterpart, but it's still well-stocked with more than just essentials.

Wholehearted cooperative spirit - Edit
Daily Bread Co-operative is a true gem once you find it. Cambridge's second oldest, whole foods, workers cooperative is still growing strong with their christian inspired ethics and mission: to put people before profit.
Read moreYou can buy a wide range of basic dried food products, such as flours, pasta, mueslis and pulses, dried fruits, seeds and nuts. The herb and spice selection is incredible. Most products are also available in bulk. Wide choice of fresh fruit and veg and chilled vegan goods including frozen vegan pizza. There are plenty of cruelty free body care and household products and a small section of Fair Trade 'gifts' and cards.
There is a small in-store cafe which serves affordable drinks and vegan cakes and a very quirky little free library.
As a gardener I sometimes get my organic seeds there too.
The refill station is probably my favourite because you can bring your own bottles and refill them with washing up liquid!
It's definitely worth the trip.
Pros: Wide product range, Refills and bulk available , Big car park
Cons: Out of the way, Not visible from the outside

Wonderful out-of-the-way health food shop - Edit
This health food shop is awesome. Not ideally situated, but has its own small car park which is never full. They sell a large range of vegan and organic food, household items and gifts, including quite a selection of baby items. The staff will always help you if an item you're looking for is not out on the shelves. They sell some pretty obscure vegan items but also your typical "health food" fare, for example herbs and spices, milk alternatives and dried fruit.

Cons: Out-of-the-way for most people
