Our home from home in Penang

Coya is located just a few meters from the Frame Hotel in Georgetown where we were staying, so it was easy for us to go there for lunch or dinner. We visited four times during our stay and enjoyed it so much. The restaurant is spacious and calm, and we loved to relax there after exploring the city. The owner/manager is genuinely friendly and even made vegan jelly cake for us (for free!) upon our last visit. She was very kind and you can see that she wants her customers to be happy with the meals. We also liked that when we ordered, we were given different options, for example which exact rice we liked.
We had different dishes there and while not everything was top notch, they were all home-cooked, fresh and simple meals that fill you up. It is not some fancy cuisine, but we liked the fresh taste of good ingredients so much. The only dish we did not enjoy was the Thai style brinjal because it was very oily. Our favourites were the fried spinach, the fried pumpkin and the vege curry.
The restaurant is not completely vegan, but the non-vegan dishes are marked with the picture of an egg. The staff also have a good understanding of veganism and speak English very well, so it is no problem to ask about any ingredients.

We left Penang yesterday and we already miss Coya!

Not impressed

Their spicy noodles where actually really very spicy, which is nice. Overall the taste and quality was fine. But they were not that cheap, did have a (low) extra tax, and offered no free water. Not impressed. Kitchen closes at 9.15.

A great choice in Penang

A quaint restaurant in a quiet street just near the heritage area of Penang, Coya provides a very decent eat in a clean and comfortably air conditioned environment. The menu covers lots of Nyonya classics so is a good way to get familiar with the local cuisine. They also do fruit and vege juices which can be customized if you wish. Prices are comparatively high for Penang but the ambience is above average also (the lighting lets it down though, it's too brightly lit). They claim not to use weird ingredients - we're not totally convinced about that but if it's true that they use no GMO soy meat, MSG or commercial sauces then that is certainly a good thing. At any rate it's still one of the better options in Penang and is certainly worth a visit.

Pros: Real food (wish it was organic though!), Local cuisine, Cool and clean

Cons: Lighting too bright, Bit too much fake meat, Pricey for Penang?

A Decent Vegetarian Restaurant

Nice and cozy environment. Healthy cooking style but still very tasty. They serve rice/noodles dishes and also other ala carte dishes to go with rice.
Price is moderate. However, food serving can be a little slow at times.

Pros: Cozy Environment , Tasty

Cons: Slow

YUM!!

Great little place with delicious food. Menu is diverse and prices are very good. We very much appreciated that the food was not greasy and offered brown rice instead of white. The staff spoke wonderful English and was easy to understand!

Pros: clean , has AC, friendly staff

Cons: not facing the main road , small sign in front (might be easy to miss)

Coya Cuisine

Excellent food served by welcoming staff.

Warning: this a 'locals' place and if you are a foreigner or from outer space, you will be stared at in awe! Helpful staff will assist in making a selection if you can't work it out for yourself!

Pros: V. clean, friendly staff, good food

Cons: toilets in kitchen (though v. clean)
