A Wonderful Lunch

Found this charming place on HappyCow and am glad to provide a review. I called after business hours on Tuesday to check on the Vegan options for Wednesday's lunch. Steve (owner) called me back early Wednesday morning and went over several wonderful sounding options for me. Told him to expect me and a friend around noon. I was meeting an old friend of thirty years. We both had a ways to drive to get there, he drove an hour and I drove just shy of three. Was well worth the trip.

Walked in the door a little before noon and Steve greeted me by name and welcomed me to the reserved table he set for our lunch. The place is charming and next time I will bring my wife as I am sure she will love the decor.

My friend arrived and we started with the hummus and pita plate that also included Pico de Gallo. It all was fresh made and tasted wonderful. After enjoying the appetizer we talked for a while and then listened to Steve go over the options and even a few things that were not on the menu that Brenda (chef) could make for us. We chose the vegetable quesadillas, they contained very fresh ingredients and were excellent

Sat for a while longer and then order a glass of wine as we continued our time reminiscing of our growing families as well as some new adventures that we each had taken. Steve, all along was very attentive with making sure we had coffee or any other option we requested. A few minutes later he came back to the table with complementary desert. Wow, what an unexpected gem this place turned out to be.

We ended up staying three and a half hours and felt very welcome the whole time.

If the Copper Dog Cafe were closer I would eat here several times a month. Will definitely be back on my next trip that is anywhere close to Lafayette.

Thank you Steve and Brenda for making a mini reunion joyful for two old friends.

Excellent Food, Even Better Service

My husband and I were on a road trip and were about to stop at a roadside Cracker Barrel to order some veggies and continue on our way. However, divine intervention made us miss our exit and I immediately jumped on Urban Spoon to find a vegetarian alternative. Copper Dog Cafe came up and we were only five minutes away, so we went for it. We were not disappointed! The moment we stepped inside, we knew it was the right place for us. Beautiful, soothing atmosphere and the best (ABSOLUTE BEST) service we've had at a restaurant in quite some time. The owner made us feel at home and although we'd planned to take our food "to go", the wonderful ambiance convinced us that we had to stay. We ordered the veggie/black bean burgers, baked potato with veggie chili, chocolate chip cookie, and carrot cake. Everything was excellent. The salad was crisp and fresh, the dressing was some of the best we'd had. The burgers were flavorful and the buns were hearty. My husbands' baked potato was very good and he loved the chili and "sour cream" on top. The owner talked to us about his background and what brought them to the restaurant - we felt like friends by the end of our time there.

Finally, we took our desserts to go and reluctantly left the little slice of paradise we'd found in Lafayette, Indiana. We ate the carrot cake and cookie from our hotel room after arriving at our destination and enjoyed them both very much.

We would HIGHLY recommend this restaurant, and will be back whenever we're in the Indianapolis area!

Pros: Great food, Excellent Service, Amazing, relaxing atmosphere

Cons: A little pricey (but worth it), not close enough to our house! :)

Reservations Highly Recommended

I was in Lafayette for 4 days and tried to eat at the Copper Dog with no success. Accordingly, my rating for this review is based on aspects of the restaurant other than the taste of the food. Long story short, call and make reservations before you go whether it's for lunch or dinner. Think of this more as a semi-private dining experience than a regular restaurant, kind of like Schwa in Chicago.

I went by on Friday at 3pm to find them closed. They close between lunch and dinner. Then on Saturday I called to confirm that they were open. No answer. I kept getting the recording. The posted hours say they are open until 8pm on Saturdays so I stopped by at 7pm to find all the chairs on the table and the place closed up. The owner was kind enough to come over when he saw me at the door. He told me they closed b/c they ran out of food. He said everything is made fresh and when they're out, they're out. I appreciate that everything is made fresh, but there can be no doubt you will lose customers with unreliable hours. Moreover, I showed up an hour before closing on a Saturday night, not 10 mins before closing on a Tuesday. Anyone coming after me would have no idea why they were closed, would probably be annoyed and not come here again. They're also closed Sundays and Mondays.

Irregular hours aside, the menu looks incredible and a gourmet vegetarian restaurant is a wonderful addition to Lafayette.

p.s. They have vegan-friendly wine now.

A Great Experience!

Contrary to the info on the Copper Dog cafe, they do NOT serve any meat products. It is a 100% meat-free cafe, and the delightful and intimate ambiance sets the perfect backdrop for their delicious meals. My GF and I were pleasantly surprised when we learned the cafe would soon be serving organic and local wines in the near future. We will definitely return!!
