Vegetarian Curry

Coco is a chain which serves a delicious vegetarian curry which is also suitable for vegans. This can be ordered plain, with mixed vegetables, with spinach or with eggplant. You can customise the amount of rice, spice level and add a range of additional toppings. Easy to order online using the QR code on the table.

Very good spinach curry

I got the spinach curry as takeaway with spice level 4 out of 20. It was quite spicy and I like spicy, so beware when you order! I got a tofu bar from a konbini before which I sliced into the curry for some protein and it worked surprisingly well. Cheap place with very friendly staff and quick service.

Pros: Cheap, Fast, Tasty

Helpful staff

The staff saw I ordered vegan naan and checked with me and then my main dish to be vegan, I really appreciated how proactive they were. Prices weren’t bad and portion was decent too.

Steer clear!!

Not recommended. There were several shreds of meat (probably beef?) in the sauce of the supposedly vegan friendly vegetable curry I ordered. Presumably accidental, but nevertheless unacceptable in my opinion. Moreover, the curries themselves are rather generic, and there are no vegetable protein add-ins available.

A common mistake people make is to order the “vegetable” curry instead of the “vegetarian” curry. The vegetarian sauce is meat free but the vegetable curry uses the regular, meaty sauce. It’s confusing. 🫤 Are you a Bowie fan by any chance?

That is very odd indeed. They should definitely make that more clear...

Yes, I am. Outside is my favourite album 🙂

I agree, it’s confusing. I also agree that Outside is a fantastic album!!

Average Chain-Food

Since the extraordinary taste was mentioned - you might try "Cochin Nivas" just around the corner which has really good and original curry. That place is also mentioned in "Vegemap" a Japanese Project which is similar like Happycow. Selection might be smaller, but it's also an original place, not as this impersonal, devouring kind of chain.

So, food was good /average. All the "options" are a bit overwhelming and also odd you even pay an surcharge by any of the (up to 15) "spicy-levels".

Good veggie curry

Easy to order sitting at the table via QR code, staff didn’t speak English. Pick a basic curry and add additional veggies, serving size and level of spice. This was perfect after a busy day walking in cold winter weather. We have been to CoCo Ichibanya before and would go again.

Pros: Easy to order, Cheap price, Tastes great

Average food

They provide several vegetarian/vegan options. I tried the vegetarian curry. It was meh. It contained mostly potatoes with a few pieces of carrots and a single piece of green bean. I would have preferred more variety in vegetables. You have to specify the size of rice and spice level between 1-10. I chose level 4. I can tolerate a high spice level but this one was way too spicy for me.

Good, affordable curry!

Ordered take away from this shop and am very satisfied. The curry was really good and I like that we're able to adjust the amount of rice.

Does the job

Classic Japanese curry with out the meat in their roux. They have a separate menu that contains all their recommended combination. If you're feeling adventurous, try the mushroom and okra curry 🍄

Pros: Great vegan menu

Convenient and cheap

Well, what should I say? It’s CoCo curry! Nothing special but a good plate of filling curry for a good price.
As stated before they do fry everything together so stay away from fried veggies if that concerns you.

Great quick curry, not too many options

Good, quick, vegan options. NOTE: eggplant is cooked in animal based oil, even though it’s on their “non animal ingredients” page!! Corn salad is also vegan.

Pros: Quick and inexpensive, Great taste & spice options

Cons: BEWARE OF THE EGGPLANT LOL, cooked in animal oil

Really enjoyed this curry!

Me and my friends came here so I could eat my first Japanese curry in Japan. They had a menue for vegetarian that is also vegan. We added extra rice and I made it level 3 spice. I actually had 3,5 and 6 while in Japan and I would have gone higher if I could eat curry that regularly. The spice is really well levelled, warning it is super spicy for people that are not used to the spice!

Pros: a few different options to choose from, cheap, vegetarian and vegan menue

Cons: not a lot of vege, No protein option

5 stars

The curry here was really great and it's awesome that Coco Ichibanya rolled out veg options! So glad we could try Japanese curry in Japan. If you aren't familiar with Japanese curry, it's different in terms of flavor from Indian curry, so don't go in expecting that. You get to choose from different types of veggies, and they have a lot of options -- I really recommend getting potato and carrot (classics for Japanese curry), and the eggplant was really delicious, so try that too if you like eggplant. It's not listed on the veg menu, but you can choose a spice level from 1 to 10 (a few more yen as you increase in spiciness). We got 3, which was a nice level of spiciness for us -- not super spicy, but a little kick. Portions were filling and really cheap. I definitely recommend it. Staff were well aware of the vegan option and how it worked -- no confusion at all. Staff didn't speak English, but it wasn't an issue.
I would absolutely give this place five stars if Happy Cow allowed it.
Note: the coordinates from Happy Cow were way off from where the restaurant actually was. Once you get to the general area just put Coco Ichibanya into Google Maps and choose the one that has a picture of the door with the sign saying "vegetarian curry."

Pros: Big portions., Super affordable., Delicious.

Japanese curry - tasty and warming

We ate at Coco Ichibanya (although it was in Shinjuku, it might have been a different outlet to this one - we ate at the one in so called "Memory Lane". Either way I assume the food is the same at all of them) and it was very cold that night. It was so good to get a seat in the tiny warm restaurant and have a vegan Japanese curry be available. The service was quick and friendly, meal was fantastically tasty and filling, and cheap! We wanted to go back but didn't find another Coco Ichibanya during our travels in other parts of Japan, although they could well have been many others. Recommended!

Pros: Clearly states vegan option on menu, Very yummy, Fast and inexpensive

Cheap, quick, tasty!

Ordered: Vegetarian (also vegan) curry with okra, yamaimo (Japanese mountain yam), mushrooms and regular rice size. Their regular rice size is 300g. For a small eater like myself, 300g is generous! You can also choose your spice level. I went with regular spice. If you add more rice/spice, it costs extra. If you want less rice, then they’ll deduct some yen from your bill.

This place is part of the CoCo Ichibanya chain of curry restaurants across Japan. Some branches offer veg*n curry while others do not. They will usually have a separate veg*n curry menu on display with the other menus at the table. This particular branch also had a sticker outside the restaurant explicitly saying that vegetarian curry was served there.

When I arrived at this place, it was the lunch rush hour at around 12-1. There was about a 5 minute wait for a seat. The place is medium sized but it being located in an area of Nishishinjuku that’s about a 15-20 minute walk from the busy Shinjuku station, I understood why this place might get busy. If you’re planning on making a visit to this place, be aware that it can get busy.

The veg*n menu has around 7 curries or so, all with at least 2 veggies. I ate at other CoCo Ichi branches a few times during my time in Japan and I can say that of all the branches, Nishishinjuku’s curry was the most flavourful. The kitchen is also very quick at getting out the meals so if you’re in need of a quick, cheap, and tasty fix, then I highly recommend CoCo Ichi Nishishinjuku.

Pros: Good value for money, A veg menu with more than 2 options, Curry customisation
